“Mary’s an easy person to fall in love with,” says the filmmaker James Adolphus, who has spent the past three years making a documentary about Hollywood icon Mary Tyler Moore.
In Being Mary Tyler Moore, which HBO will release in May after a March 13 premiere at SXSW, Adolphus documents Moore’s career, interweaving professional highlights like the Dick Van Dyke Show and the Mary Tyler Moore Show, with inclusions from an extensive personal archive. The goal is to show Moore’s impact entertainment and on generations of women. One of those women is the documentary’s producer, Lena Waithe.
After Moore passed in 2017, Adolphus says, her husband Robert Levine was tasked with keeping the star’s legacy but was unsure how to go about it. There were offers from other filmmakers to tell Moore’s life story but he was unconvinced until reading a Vanity Fair 2018 cover story...

Haley Lu Richardson has drawn praise on the internet after expressing her down-to-earth desire to be on Love Island.
The actor, who came to the attention of many during the second season of The White Lotus last year, was one of many stars at the SAG Awards on Sunday evening (26 February).
In a video posted to TikTok, Vanity Fair asked celebrities on the red carpet what TV show they would join if they had the opportunity.
Many of the answers given by the actors were prestige drama series in contention for awards that evening.
In terms of The White Lotus cast, Theo James suggested Succession, while his on-screen wife Meghann Fahy nodded in agreement. Elsewhere, Will Sharpe suggested the Apple TV Plus thriller series, Severance.

Ever since the "Toy Story" films made us think of our toys as sentient (or at least confirmed it for some people), a small part of the brain feels bad for the ones who don't get played with. You are not alone if you have a soft spot in your heart for Ken, the companion of Barbie (and understand why his name has to be qualified by his relationship with her).
Poor Kenneth Carson -- yes, he has a full name -- was created in 1961, two years after his future girlfriend. He's had many professions, like hamburger cook, astronaut, drum major, and rapper, to name a few. It's not a great quality in a mate, but Barbie has worked in many places as well. They're made for each other. Sadly, Ken dolls usually end up as an afterthought for kids who love Barbie.
Ryan Gosling is here to change all that.

Tony Ciulla, who managed Marilyn Manson for the past 25 years, has dropped the shock rocker as a client, a source close to the situation confirmed to Rolling Stone. The move comes after several women, including actress and Manson’s ex-fiancé Evan Rachel Wood, accused Manson of sexual and physical abuse.
Ciulla started managing Manson in 1996, the same year the artist put out his mainstream breakthrough, Antichrist Superstar. He stood by the singer, whose real name is Brian Warner, through multiple controversies — including criticism that followed the musician after the Columbine shooting — and myriad lawsuits.

Singer Marilyn Manson has rubbished abuse allegations made by his former fiancee, actor Evan Rachel Wood, even as his music label cancelled contract and he lost out on a horror series deal.
On Monday, the actress had claimed on Instagram that Manson "horrifically abused" her for years when they were in a relationship.
"The name of my abuser is Brian Warner, also known to the world as Marilyn Manson. He started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years. I was brainwashed and manipulated into submission," Wood wrote.

When Sex and the City finally returns to the air, it will not be sidestepping Covid-19, it has been announced.
And Just Like That, the title of the new series, will bring back Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristen Davis.
Kim Cattrall has been vocal about not wanting to reprise her role in any capacity, so she will not be back for the project.
New York City was essentially a character in its original run, and that will largely be the case during the ten-episode revival.
But this will be a very different city than the one we fell in love with all those years ago.
Parker opened up to Vanity Fair, announcing that Covid-19 will "obviously be part of the storyline, because that’s the city [these characters] live in, and how has that changed relationships once friends disappear? I have great faith that the writers are going to examine it all.

The revival of “Sex and the City” will take place in a New York City that has been through the Covid-19 pandemic and is grappling with the effects of it, Sarah Jessica Parker said of the show.
Parker, who played Carrie Bradshaw for the six-season run of the show on HBO, told Vanity Fair that when the show returns as a limited series on HBO Max, the pandemic will “obviously be part of the storyline.”

It takes too many words to properly describe Richard Kelly’s followup to Donnie Darko, but the oversized dystopian sci-fi epic just might grab audiences looking for weird extravagance. Cult hosannas aside, Kelly’s ‘crazy’ predictions closely resemble our present domestic chaos. Brilliant ideas rub shoulders with apocalyptic clichés and the acting styles are all over the place, but the show frequently achieves a truly goofy vibe described by its director as a cross between Philip K. Dick and Thomas Pynchon. Just be ready for a storyline that scatters in all directions. This new disc is a video debut for the original, longer Cannes preview cut.

The new Sex and the City miniseries won’t pretend it’s the beforetimes.
Sarah Jessica Parker told Vanity Fair that the pandemic will “obviously be part of the storyline, because that’s the city [these characters] live in. And how has that changed relationships once friends disappear? I have great faith that the writers are going to examine it all.”
The HBO Max miniseries, titled And Just Like That…, will catch up with the characters from the iconic former series. Parker starred in the original series and two movies as sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw, with Cynthia Nixon as attorney Miranda Hobbes and Kristin Davis as marriage and family-oriented gallery director Charlotte York.
Missing in action from the new series is Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones. Cattrall opted out of the new version. The HBO series ran for six seasons from 1998 to 2004, returning for two theatrical-released films in 2008 and 2010.

Since he began his film acting career over 40 years ago, Delroy Lindo has steadily built a reputation as a well-respected and experienced performer. He has worked with such directors as Ron Howard, Tony Scott, and Danny Boyle, but his collaborations with Spike Lee have proven to be the most fruitful. His prominent roles in three of Lee’s films boosted his profile in the industry and attracted the attention of several critics groups in the 1990s, including the National Society of Film Critics.
Earlier this month, the Nsfc gave Lindo their Best Actor award for his work in the Netflix release “Da 5 Bloods,” which reunited him with Lee after 25 years. The performance also won him the New York Film Critics Circle award and a dozen more nominations from critics groups to date. After decades of putting in the work, all signs point to Lindo receiving his first Oscar nomination for what K.

Peter J. Nygard and Louis Bacon were two of the world’s richest men, who also happened to be neighbors in a posh corner of the Bahamas. A bitter feud between the billionaire hedge fund operator and the Canadian fashion mogul, one that initally stemmed from a noise complaint, dominated headlines, and eventually led to Nygard’s arrest and indictment for racketeering and sex trafficking.
It’s a stranger-than-fiction saga that seems ripe for the big screen treatment. Well, no surprise — in a highly competitive situation, Matthew George’s Savvy Media Holdings has acquired the rights to two books on the battling one-percenters. The company has purchased the underlying material of Dick Russell’s forthcoming book “Bacon Vs. Nygard: Sex-Trafficking, Political Corruption, Murder-for-Hire, and the Takedown,” as well as Melissa Cronin’s “Predator King: Peter Nygard’s Dark Life of Rape, Drugs, and Blackmail.” The latter was published in April last year by Skyhorse Publishing.

This article contains Cobra Kai spoilers.
Why aren’t there more Asians in Cobra Kai?
Since Cobra Kai first premiered on YouTube, The Los Angeles Times, Vanity Fair, and other publications have called out the series for its lack of Asianness. The series also scored poorly on UCLA’s 2020 Hollywood Diversity Report. Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) and Carmen (Vanessa Rubio) are the only non-white main characters. This was exacerbated when the recently-released season 3 excluded Aisha (Nichole Brown), a major character of color who was a fan favorite.
Granted, Cobra Kai does have a few non-white actors in reccurring roles. They just aren’t leads. Nate Oh plays Nathaniel, but he is a minor character with minimal development. Kyler (Joe Seo) was the first bully to appear in Cobra Kai constantly harassing Miguel. To their credit, the writers made him a wrestler instead of a stereotypical martial artist, just because he’s Asian.

Bess Kalb didn’t mean to end 2020 by making Christopher Hitchens’ “Why Women Aren’t Funny” go viral. The 2007 Vanity Fair essay is — like so much of its late author’s work — self-indulgent, poorly written and lacking any well-defined quality beside its ability to irritate people.
One of those irritated people, more than a decade ago, was a young Kalb. In a Twitter thread posted Tuesday, the veteran late-night writer recalled the moment when, as an unsuspecting college sophomore, she picked up a copy of Vanity Fair in Penn Station, then read Hitchens’ essay.
She then drew a narrative line from that moment, which inspired her to pursue a career in comedy, to the creation of “Yearly Departed,” the new Amazon special created by Kalb and featuring a cast made up mostly of women and an all-woman writing staff.

The DC Cinematic Universe seems to have found another success with “Wonder Woman 1984.”
Reviews began to flood in on Tuesday, with the majority of the critics favoring the film for its escapist qualities and director Patty Jenkins’ take on the 1980s. The movie, releasing in theaters and on HBO Max on Dec. 25, finds the titular character (Gal Gadot) in a world of hope and positivity as her love interest from the first film (Chris Pine) returns. And while “Wonder Woman 1984” has earned an 89% rating from Rotten Tomatoes after 71 critic reviews, many commentators noted that, while fun, the movie often felt overindulgent or cliché.

The first batch of reviews for Patty Jenkins’ highly anticipated Wonder Woman 1984 are finally in and it seems that the long-awaited sequel has managed to stick the landing, roughly speaking.
It’s been a tough wait for fans of Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince ever since the first movie premiered in 2017 to critical acclaim and commercial success. Now, the second installment will be making its way to select theaters across the world and HBO Max later this month. But what are the critics saying about Wonder Woman’s next solo outing?
Well, the movie is currently sitting at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes with 58 reviews, so it’s safe to say that the reception has been extremely positive overall. Ben Travis of Empire Magazine called the flick “a vibrant and virtuous adventure,” noting that WW84 may very well have been the hero that “2020 needed all along.” Chicago Sun-Times, meanwhile, praised the movie for its entertainment value,...

Ben Travis of Empire Magazine called the flick “a vibrant and virtuous adventure,” noting that WW84 may very well have been the hero that “2020 needed all along.” Chicago Sun-Times, meanwhile, praised the movie for its entertainment value,...

Bridgerton is a unique mix of Shonda Rhimes’ dedication to Black representation on American television and the British period drama tradition. White critics may dismiss this trend as unnecessary “pandering” to Black and Poc viewers, but the number of productions designed around reforming all white-casting has increased over the past 10 years—and has only added to the success of the genre. The number one reason driving demand for diverse period dramas is from Black and Poc fans of the genre. The impact of seeing an actor that looks like you can’t be measured in ratings or clicks online. Despite facing years of content and fandom overtly or covertly claiming that the universal themes in period dramas are not “for us”; the tide is starting to turn as fans use social media and the power of ratings to ask for more representation.

Warner Bros announced the surprising decision this week to have its entire 2021 theatrical slate—which includes Dune, Wonder Woman 1984, and even Clint Eastwood's Cry Macho—on the streaming service HBO Max for each film's first month of release, in addition to a concurrent theatrical release. Earlier this fall, Florida prosecutors dropped charges against New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft for allegedly getting a rub-and-tug at the Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Jupiter, Florida, on the grounds that surveillance footage used to try to prosecute him was illegally obtained. But even though Kraft has managed to avoid the fist of the law, the women involved in the case — largely, middle-aged Asian immigrants — have not.

“The Mandalorian” has been full of Easter eggs and references to the broader “Star Warrs” mythos, but few reveals could match the excitement that stemmed from the live-action debut of Ahsoka Tano (Rosaria Dawson) on the show last week.
While “The Mandalorian” marks the character’s first live-action appearance, Ahsoka has become a staple part of the “Star Wars” franchise throughout the last decade and has appeared in a handful of popular animated television shows. Today, Ahsoka is one of the most popular “Star Wars” characters, but that wasn’t always destined to be the case. Ahsoka made her franchise debut via the 2008 critically-panned “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” film. Ahsoka was introduced as Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan, or Jedi apprentice, but film reviewers took issue with the character’s personality and design. Thankfully for Ahsoka, fans and critics began warming up to the character as she continued to appear in subsequent “Star Wars” media.

Late-night will undoubtedly be a bit different under a Joe Biden presidency, and Stephen Colbert has started to think what that might envision.
In a wide-ranging interview for the cover of Vanity Fair, The Late Show host talked about what he thinks the CBS show will look like. He also revealed that he has been diagnosed with a rare condition called benign positional vertigo.
Separately, showrunner Chris Licht opened up about an informal club between the bosses of the rival late-night shows and how that group helped when Covid-19 struck in March.
Many have suggested that late-night may become sillier and ratings may fall once Donald Trump is no longer president. But Colbert tells the glossy monthly that he couldn’t be happier.
“If Joe Biden is a pair of khaki pants inside a manila envelope, that would be great. I actually don’t think you need to think about politics all the time.

This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
Despite never appearing in the flesh in any of the movies, former Jedi padawan Ahsoka Tano is undoubtedly one of the most popular characters in Star Wars. A hero in every sense of the word, Ahsoka’s journey spans almost the entire film saga, just in animated form.
First introduced as Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice in The Clone Wars animated series, Ahsoka quickly became one of the main protagonists of the series, as we watched her grow as both a Jedi and a commander who led clone forces for the Republic. And even though her time with the Jedi came to an end before Order 66, when she chose to walk away from the Order in search of her own path, she continued to fight for others.
In Rebels, she became the spy known as “Fulcrum,” helping the fledgling Rebellion in its struggle to topple the Empire.

The fifth episode of “The Mandalorian’s” second season dropped a bombshell on “Star Wars” fans: Baby Yoda’s real name is Grogu. How showrunner Jon Favreau and his creative team landed on the name Grogu remains unknown, but it’s not like the name was decided upon during the development of the show’s second season. Writer-director Dave Filoni told Vanity Fair the Grogu name “has been around for a while.” Filoni found out about Baby Yoda’s name in the early days of Season 1, which more or less means Baby Yoda had a real name for the show’s entire run.
“Jon told me early on in Season One what it would be, which made me start to think about how people could learn the name,” Filoni said. “This gave me the idea that Ahsoka, who is very compassionate, would be able to connect with the child, and...

Ahsoka Tano's arrival on The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 5 almost featured a "Baby Yoda" shoutout.
Ever since The Mandalorian Season 1 Episode 1 aired, fans were quick to call The Child "Baby Yoda," a reference to Yoda from the Star Wars lore.
And Mandalorian executive producer David Filoni wanted to mark Rosario Dawson's arrival as Ahsoka by playing into that in some way.
“[O]ne of the most compelling things about introducing Ahsoka is that she is one of the few, few people that we could encounter in a story and she would say, ‘All right. I met someone like [the Child]. I’ve only ever seen one other being like this,'” Filoni explained in a new interview with Vanity Fair.
“I had to stop myself from doing something ridiculous like have her say, ‘Is that a Yoda baby?’ It almost demands to be said.”
Instead, Ahsoka explained that she had come in contact with someone similar.

The Golden Globes have made a habit of overlooking Ethan Hawke, recognizing the four-time Oscar nominee just once for his supporting role in “Boyhood” (2014). But Hawke seems to be a shoo-in this year for playing John Brown, a wild-eyed abolitionist leading a misfit brigade of soldiers in Showtime’s limited series “The Good Lord Bird.” According to our odds, Hawke is on track to earn his second Golden Globe nomination and potentially win.
Emmy champ Mark Ruffalo is the odds-on favorite to take home the Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor Globe for his performance in “I Know This Much Is True,” but Hawke is within striking distance in second place. The two actors have battled it out once before at the Globes when Hawke was up for “Boyhood” and Ruffalo received a bid for “Foxcatcher,” but they were taken down by eventual Oscar winner J.K. Simmons for “Whiplash.” Rounding...

Oscar-nominated actor and writer Ethan Hawke is poised to contend for kudos for his television work with the recently concluded “The Good Lord Bird.” He also served as a co-writer and executive producer of this Showtime limited series. Hawke portrays the preacher and abolitionist, John Brown, in his adaptation of the acclaimed novel by James McBride.
The story is told from the perspective of a slave, Henry (Joshua Caleb Johnson), who ends up in Brown’s gang and is mistaken for being a girl. Brown lead an armed raid against the U.S. Armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now in West Virginia) in 1859 in the hopes of starting an uprising of American slaves against the institution. While the raid was unsuccessful (with Brown ultimately being executed for treason and murder), many historians view Brown’s actions as a key moment in the lead up to the American Civil War.

This piece contains spoilers for Ready Player Two.
When Ernest Cline published Ready Player One in 2011, its exhaustive array of Easter eggs were literally built into the worldbuilding—seemingly one pop culture name-drop per pixel that made up the digital Oasis, per the fierce 1980s nostalgia that creator James Donovan Halliday possessed for the most formative decade of his adolescence. And once the billionaire inventor revealed the Easter egg hunt for his fortune, it made perfect sense that the 2040s generation of gunters would immerse themselves in the same references, placing themselves into Halliday’s mindset to inherit his treasure.
Almost a decade later, those ’80s references are more exhausting in Ready Player Two—like when Wade rattles off his vintage morning routine basically cosplaying as Marty McFly, down to getting woken up by Huey Lewis and the News’ “Back in Time” via a Panasonic Rc-6015 flip-clock radio. Whereas the...

Coming off of directing two of the biggest films of all time, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” the Russo Brothers could have chosen any feature to be their first non-Marvel film in years. And what they chose is the upcoming drama, “Cherry.” And according to a new preview from Vanity Fair, just because “Cherry” doesn’t have superheroes and a purple villain, this feature is still an epic.

Tom Holland scored Oscar buzz during the 2012-2013 awards season for his supporting performance in “The Impossible,” and now he’s back on Oscar pundits’ radar with his upcoming drama “Cherry.” Based on the 2018 novel by Nico Walker, the film reunites Holland with his Marvel Cinematic Universe directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who are diving into a hard-hitting character study after the record-breaking success of “Avengers: Endgame.” Vanity Fair has the official first look at “Cherry,” including new stills of Holland and his co-star Ciara Bravo.

“The Mandalorian” star Gina Carano has stirred both pushback and support from “Star Wars” and Disney fans alike on social media after posting a number of controversial tweets, including about mask-wearing and hypothetical voter fraud. The actress, who plays Cara Dune in the Disney+ series, was also previously accused of mocking trans pronouns on social media. See some of the tweets below.
The #FireGinaCarano hashtag began picking up steam last week, but has continued to build momentum after Disney+ dropped the “Chapter 12” episode of “The Mandalorian” on Friday, in which Carano stars. But at the same time, #StandWithGinaCarano has also begun trending on Twitter in response from fans who feel the plea to cast Carano out of the show is another example of censorship, and cancel culture gone too far.

Citizen Kane wouldn’t be Citizen Kane without Herman J. Mankiewicz, the man who co-wrote—or perhaps even solely wrote—Orson Welles’s 1941 masterwork, almost without getting credit. Eighty years later, David Fincher’s Mank offers a portrait of the unsung scribe, played by Gary Oldman as a bed-ridden alcoholic drumming out a script that would crib from his real-life sojourn at the court of media titan William Randolph Hearst. But Mank, penned by Fincher’s late father Jack, isn’t particularly interested in chronicling Kane’s genesis, or the war Hearst waged to halt its release. Nor is it concerned with settling the authorship feud between Welles and Mankiewicz. “An imaginative weave of scholarship and speculation,” as Justin Chang calls it over at the L.A. Times, the film:…tiptoes deftly through that partisan minefield, celebrating its hero’s work without succumbing to Welles erasure. The astounding accomplishment of...

Carlo Mirabella-Davis's Swallow is showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries starting October 31, 2020.Two thrillers that dealt with abusive partners, pregnancy, and by extension, bodily autonomy, debuted in the early months of 2020. Were it not for Covid-19, more ado might have been made of the thematic similarities between Leigh Whannel’s reimagining of H.G. Wells’ The Invisible Man and Carlo Mirabella-Davis’ indie debut Swallow. The week–apart timing of their respective releases suggests a percolating, post-Weinstein reckoning and if they’re any indication, films created in this wake will take a corrective approach with women-driven narratives that make explicit reference to lessons (ostensibly) learned from #MeToo. In the hands of two male directors, reproductive rights might seem a pandering subject meant to assuage a demographic eager to see Hollywood change its ways, but pregnancy in particular has a rich precedent in horror films. The pinnacle of the micro-genre...
