Dennis Quaid (Lawmen: Bass Reeves) is slipping into the world of a serial killer who used a smiley face as his calling card for Paramount+’s Happy Face. Emmy nominee Quaid will star as the Happy Face Killer in the streamer’s new drama, inspired by the killer’s daughter Melissa Moore’s autobiography, Shattered Silence, and her Happy Face podcast.
Emmy nominee Annaleigh Ashford (Welcome to Chippendales) was previously announced to play Melissa. Filming is expected to get underway this spring, with Paramount+ targeting a 2025 premiere for the eight-episode season.
“Happy Face for Paramount+ jumps off from Moore’s true-life story. Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who also is Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father. After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way to force himself back into his daughter’s life,” reads Paramount+’s synopsis.

Paramount+’s drama Happy Face has found its title star.
Dennis Quaid will star with Annaleigh Ashford in the series and will play very much against type in the role of a notorious serial killer nicknamed “Happy Face” because he drew smiley faces on evidence in boasting about his crimes. The series, from executive producers Robert and Michelle King (Evil, The Good Fight) and showrunner Jennifer Cacicio, is based on the real-life story of Melissa Moore, the daughter of the killer; the true-crime podcast Happy Face, from iHeartPodcasts and Moore; and Moore’s autobiography Shattered Silence, written with M. Bridget Cook.
The show will use Moore’s story as a jumping-off point to tell a story of how Melissa (Ashford) is drawn back into her father’s world after decades of not having contact with him. Happy Face (Quaid), in prison for his crimes, finds a way to force himself...

When filming The Long Game, major golf enthusiast Dennis Quaid learned something about making a golf movie the the hard way.
“You don’t get to play that much golf at all,” Quaid tells Den of Geek during a visit to our 2023 SXSW studio.
Directed by Julio Quintana, The Long Game is based on the 2012 book Mustang Miracle by Humberto Garcia. Both the book and now the film recount the real life story of the 1955-1957 San Felipe High School Mustangs golf team in Del Rio, Texas, which made up exclusively of Mexican-American players – a first for the sport.
In a time where golf reserved for wealthy and connected white men, five young Mexican-American caddies broke major cultural barriers by assembling a team to compete against (and ultimately defeat) their white peers. The advance in technology, particularly the ease in transfer of money over smartphones, means that crooks are also getting high-tech with their scams and thieving ways. One such crime that has seen a large spike in cases in the recent years is voice phishing, the use of telephone calls to scam people out of their hard-earned money, with hundreds of millions of dollars being swindled the world over each year. The disadvantage of modern technology and financial scams are both great fodder for filmmakers, so it was only a matter of time before someone produced a story set in this criminal enterprise. That someone ended up being director duo Kim Gok and Kim Sun, best known for low-budget horror fare, who were provided with a decent budget for thriller “On The Line”.

Holdover title, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” comfortably defeated new release “Dune” at the South Korean box office over the latest weekend.
“Dune” managed to earn $2.54 million between Friday and Sunday which was equivalent to a 39% share of the total market. Over its five opening days, the sci-fi epic earned a total of $3.47 million.
“Venom 2” had opened a week earlier with a $6.71 million debut that counts as strong in the current malaise. It dropped 56% from first to second weekends, but still claimed a 46% share of the nationwide theatrical market with a $2.98 million weekend.
As “Venom” retreated, so too did the overall Korean box office. It dropped from $8.17 million the previous weekend to $6.51 million over the latest weekend.
With a $14.1 million cumulative, earned in 12 days, “Venom” is now the eighth ranking film of the year in South Korea. It appears poised to overtake “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” $15.1 million,...

“Venom: Let There Be Carnage” gave a much-needed jolt to the South Korean box office with a $6.66 million opening weekend. But there were slim pickings for other titles.
The film played on nearly 2,000 screens and accounted for 81% of nationwide box office between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
Including the film’s Wednesday and Thursday opening days, “Venom 2” has $9.26 million after five days of release.
The Venom performance lifted the overall weekend box office total from a paltry $3.73 million a week earlier, to $8.17 million.
The bright opening for “Venom 2” also contrasts sharply with the poor performance of “No Time To Die” in South Korea. The James Bond film enjoyed two weeks at the top of the chart and slipped to second place with $551,000 over the most recent weekend. But its numbers have been consistently weak. “Venom 2...

“No Time To Die” kept its place at the top of the South Korean box office for the second weekend. But, with no significant new releases competing against the James Bond title, it was a hollow victory.
The Universal-released “No Time To Die” earned $1.83 million in Korea on its second weekend of release, according to data from Kobis, the Korean Film Council-backed tracking service. That gave it an $8.01 million total after 12 days in theaters.
The score represents a 44% drop compared with the film’s opening weekend. And it accounted for a hefty 49% of nationwide total box office.
But the lack of new releases and the predictable erosion of Bond’s performance meant that cinemagoing in Korea resumed its recent weakness. Theaters in Korea enjoyed gross revenues of just $3.73 million between Friday and Sunday, down from $5.22 million on the prior weekend which was goosed by the arrival of “No Time to Die.

Endeavor Content is in talks to reteam with the filmmakers behind the hit “Blue Miracle,” in the wake of its success on Netflix, where it ranked second on its opening weekend, and is reported to have resonated in the U.S. across all ethnic groups.
Starring a relatively unknown Latino cast, the most high-profile actor in it is Dennis Quaid who plays a washed-up and cantankerous boat captain who reluctantly teams up with a guardian, played by Jimmy Gonzales (“Mayans M.C.”), and some of his charges from a cash-strapped orphanage in order to win a lucrative fishing tournament.
“Judging from the online chatter, it was seen in middle America so it not only appealed to Latino families,” said Alexis Garcia, executive VP, Endeavor Content, Advisory, Film Group, who describes it as an inspirational sports movie.

“Judging from the online chatter, it was seen in middle America so it not only appealed to Latino families,” said Alexis Garcia, executive VP, Endeavor Content, Advisory, Film Group, who describes it as an inspirational sports movie.

James Bond shot his way to the top spot at the South Korean box office, outgunning holdover and new release titles alike. But “No Time To Die” failed to revive Korea’s struggling theatrical market.
“No Time to Die” scored $3.30 million over the weekend, grabbing a 63% or nearly two thirds share of the entire market. That percentage was essentially the same as the market share figure it enjoyed on its Wednesday opening day. After five days the film now has a cumulative total of $4.55 million, according to data from the Kobis box office service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
The Bond franchise has never been the strongest performer in Korea. And Universal’s 2015 “Spectre” was weaker than 2012 “Skyfall” from Sony.
“Spectre” achieved a lifetime score of 1.82 million spectators, producing a final box office of KRW14.2 billion ($12 million at current exchange rates). “Skyfall” had lifetime total of 2.37 million spectators...

The Busan festival has experienced its share of fandom in previous editions, with everything from frenetic crowds at guest visits in Haeundae, an overflowing Biff Square in Nampodong, through to star-struck teenagers camping in the entrance to the Grand Hotel. None of these are particularly appropriate in the age of Covid and social distancing.
With that in mind, the festival has built what it calls an ‘Actors House,’ a slightly more respectful and arms-length series of encounters between on-screen stars and their public. The series consists of six, more in-depth conversations with successful, younger talent.
They will be sharing stories that have never been heard before, including their acting philosophy and their most memorable scenes, organizers say. The sessions are moderated by Una Beck, the head of Una Labo Actorology.
Highest profile participants are actress Uhm Junghwa and actor Cho Jinwoong, who have established their filmographies across the silver screen and television.

Local thriller “On The Line” held on to top spot at the South Korean box office charts. But its weak total showed that the boost to cinemas from the Chuseok holidays had been short-lived.
“On the Line” managed $1.56 million in its second weekend, a score which was only 28% down on its debut, according to data from Kobis, the box office tracking service provided by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That gave it a 39% share of the weekend total, ahead of “Miracle: Letters to the President” with $647,000 and a 16% share, and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” with $529,000 and a 13% share.
The day-by-day figures reveal that “On The Line” enjoyed two days with $1 million takings, on Tuesday and Wednesday, at the height of the holiday. But, with many people returning to work later in the week, the film’s Thursday and Friday scores were down to just $317,000 and $330,000 respectively.

New titles arrived in Korean theaters in time for the Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) holiday period, headed by locally-made thriller “On The Line,” which took top place from “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” But box office over the weekend preceding the big break remained subdued, totaling just $6.16 million.
“On The Line” earned $2.16 million from 1,294 screens between Friday and Sunday and accounted for 35.1% of nationwide box office, according to data from the Korean Film Council’s Kobis tracking service. Over the five days since its Wednesday release, it has built up a total of $2.94 million.
“Shang-Chi” took $1.11 million in its third week of release, for a total of $12.4 million since its Sept. 1 outing.

Exclusive: Dennis Quaid has signed on to star in The Hill, a family drama penned by Angelo Pizzo and the late Scott Marshall Smith, who passed away in December.
The film will tell the true story of Rickey Hill, a kid who overcame his physical disability to play professional baseball. Given the complexities Rickey faced in his relationship with his father, his is a story about more than just athletics. It’s also a story about family, and what one young man can do to follow his dream.
Quaid will portray Rickey’s father, Pastor Hill, an instinctively protective man who doesn’t want his son to go out into the world to pursue his dream, fearing that he’ll get ridiculed for his disability. Ultimately, Hill’s tough exterior is broken as Rickey grows up and proves his natural ability.
Jeff Celentano is directing the film, cast by Rick Montgomery (Green Book), which will go before cameras in Georgia in November.
He’s also producing alongside Warren Ostergard, with Matthew Dwyer, Michael Hollingsworth, Michael Blubaugh and Rickey Hill serving as exec producers.
The rest of the film’s cast has not yet been announced.
“I’m setting out to make an iconic film in the classic sense, a beautiful sweeping and powerful inspirational story. One that will stand the test of time like Blindside, Rudy, Field of Dreams and The Natural. Dennis was the first and only person I thought of for the lead role upon reading the script,” said Celentano. “There’s no doubt in my mind that he has the ability to play a loving, caring father while at the same time a staunch, powerful man – all the qualities needed to bring Pastor Hill’s character to life.”
“Since the 1970s in particular, the sports film has gained increasing recognition as one of the most important and popular genres in contemporary cinema,” added Quaid. “I couldn’t be more excited about this project. This film will no doubt further validate the power of American social mobility and show that in America you can choose to be what you want.”
Quaid is an Emmy nominee and two-time Golden Globe nominee best known on the film side for turns in Yours, Mine & Ours, In Good Company, The Day After Tomorrow, Cold Creek Manor, Far from Heaven, The Rookie, Wyatt Earp, Postcards from the Edge and other titles.
The actor’s recent TV credits include Netflix’s Merry Happy Whatever, Amazon’s Goliath and Fortitude, and Crackle’s The Art of More.
He’ll next appear in Alex Ranarivelo’s Born a Champion, Julio Quintana’s Blue Miracle, Andrew and Jon Erwin’s American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, Ray Giarratana’s The Tiger Rising, Sean McNamara’s Reagan, in which he’ll play the actor-turned president, and more.
Quaid is represented by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

When we last reported on Cry MacHo, the American neo-Western drama directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, who also stars in the film, Warner Brothers had announced an October 21st opening date. Now they’ve moved it up to September 17th and released a poster and this new trailer:
No matter what age he is, Clint Eastwood will always be a cowboy at heart.
The 91-year-old actor is back in the saddle for his upcoming movie Cry Macho, a Western drama set in 1979. Along with producing and directing the film, Eastwood stars as Mike Milo, a one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder who takes a job from an ex-boss to bring the man’s young son home from Mexico. Forced to take the backroads on their way to Texas, the unlikely pair face an unexpectedly challenging journey, during which the world-weary horseman finds unexpected connections and his own sense of redemption.

Gina Rodriguez can’t save a silly and unintentionally amusing apocalyptic tale about a mysterious affliction that means people are no longer able to sleep
There’s something so distractingly and, errr, sleepily half-assed about the inert new Netflix thriller Awake that watching it is almost as much of a bore as having to then write about it. Seemingly designed purely to lazily fill the column of “If you liked Bird Box then you should also watch” there’s nothing here that hasn’t been done before and better, a film that lumbers up to the table with completely empty hands.

In a week of mostly static VOD charts, something peculiar happened: “Spiral: From the Book of Saw,” the only major new premium VOD release, failed to dislodge “Wrath of Man” from its top overall position.
Both are genre thrillers, each released for $19.99 after their third weekend in theaters. “Spiral” is the more recent, has a 40 percent higher theatrical gross ($21.8 million to $15.6 million), and is part of a lucrative and long-running franchise. However, it’s “Wrath” that was #1 at three of the four lists below (#2 at Apple/iTunes), while “Spiral” lagged at #2 in the two charts that track by revenues and lower (#4 and #6) at Apple/iTunes and Google TV, both of which chart by number of rentals.
Why? “Wrath” had a much better Cinemascore, while the B- for “Spiral” was at the lower end for the franchise. “Wrath” has a proven action star in Statham at a time when a known star can create impulse buys.

Many a chef will tell you that fish and cheese don’t go together, but “Blue Miracle” says otherwise. Based on the true, headline-making story of an amateur Mexican team who won the world’s richest fishing tournament in 2014, Julio Quintana’s likable family film misses nary a cornball trick in Hollywood’s underdog-drama playbook, and just about pulls it off.
Viewers can see precisely where Quintana and co-writer Chris Dowling have embellished the saga of Cabo orphanage proprietor Omar Venegas, who led a handful of his teenage wards to that unlikely victory: “Blue Miracle” is awash with eleventh-hour peril and contrivance, reducing characters to stock figures to make plain sailing of its crowd-pleasing narrative. Audiences are unlikely to mind as they discover the film on Netflix: It’s a processed fish stick rather than a blue marlin steak, but it fills you up just the same.

It’s safe to say that the Covid content drought is just about over. Netflix prides itself on being the most, let’s say, prolific streaming service in the game. With its list of new releases for May 2021 it’s once again revealing why.
There is a lot going on for Netflix this month and it all starts with some high profile original films. Zack Snyder’s latest zombie effort Army of the Dead premieres on May 21. That will be preceded by Monster, the adaptation of Walter Dean Myers’ classic YA book, on May 7 and Amy Adams Rear Window-esque The Woman in the Window on May 14.

This “inspired by true events” story features Dennis Quaid and Jimmy Gonzales as the men who lead the harrowing journey. Quaid is a producer on the project along with Javier Chapa, Darren Moorman, Chris George, Ben Howard, and Trey Reynolds.

"Fish on!!" Netflix has debuted an official trailer for the inspirational family film Blue Miracle, based on a true story about a Mexican orphanage that competes in a fishing tournament. After a hurricane leaves their boys home nearly destroyed, they decide to partner with a local fishing boat captain, as played by Dennis Quaid, and enter the tournament (Bisbee's Black & Blue) with no hope - only dreams. The film's main cast includes Jimmy Gonzales, Anthony Gonzalez, Bruce McGill, Nathan Arenas, Raymond Cruz, Miguel Angel Garcia, Isaac Arellanes, Steve Gutierrez, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Fernanda Urrejola, andSilverio Palacios. As uplifting as this true story is, this is one of these perfectly campy films filled with cheesiness designed to make "all audiences" feel good. At least Quaid has some good lines in this. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Julio Quintana's Blue Miracle, from Netflix's YouTube: The incredible true story of Casa Hogar,...
