This was a good movie until the ending. Left with questions and no real resolution.

Worst ending ever
JuliassicPark19 October 2018
Watched this last night, while looking for the 2018 version, hoping this would extremely suck... But it surprised me. I was enjoying it, as the movie was getting darker , but why did they have to end it like that? That ending got me so angry that I have to give it a 4, totally ruined it.

"Final Destination" meets "Jumanji"
thanley11279 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Take this with a grain of salt, as "Truth or Dare" was clearly not produced with aspirations of becoming some iconic horror flick. No, this movie is like over-buttered popcorn -- it doesn't taste all that bad until you finish the bucket, at which point you want to puke and wonder why you didn't just stick with a pack of Twizzlers.

A group of college-age-somethings go to a haunted house to play a game of truth or dare. Turns out the house was the setting for a particularly violent game of truth or dare some 30 years prior, during which all but one participant died. As the friends start their own game, a mysterious spirit forces them through a bunch of either disgusting and/or deadly dares until they start getting bumped off one by one.

Though the actors do their best with some pretty cruddy material, the various dares they have to endure are pretty ridiculous, from eating charred flesh to drinking poison. Explanations about the mystery spirit are absent and the characters are pretty stereotypical, so you never really feel attached to the story. Not a horrible viewing on a rainy October night, but there are far better horror flicks out there.

Movie should be called Dare because that's all that happens, never know whose turn it actually is & every date is a death sentence pretty much & the acting sucks...

Horrible movie
rdraper292 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is supposed to be a movie about truth or dare when all it is doing is just having the kids kill themselves. Not really a truth or dare game.

The Truth? It's Awful!
clintstevens21 October 2018
"Good", "A treat", "Enjoyable". What is wrong with you people? There have been a total of five movies released in the last 5 years with the same title. If you want to watch a horror movie with 'truth or dare' as a plot, make sure it isn't this one.

Not only is the plot as old as the game itself, but it is nonsensical. Lazy writers just use every gory trick in the book, and none very well. And don't even get me started on the stupid ending which makes no sense and leaves the viewer hanging.

A total waste of time, but worth watching just to come back and read the reviews here praising this garbage. That is the worst horror of all.

Pretty Good for a Syfy Movie
indyj19 October 2017
For a made-for-Syfy movie, Truth or Dare was much better than the channel's usual fare. The film was actually somewhat scary and gory, the story a much more solid one, and the acting and directing far above the norm. It's by no means a masterpiece, but on the whole it holds together consistently throughout and is pretty enjoyable. 7/10

One time watch considering it's a syfy channel film but the ending is bad.
Fella_shibby24 November 2018
Another case of similar titles. Normally I avoid syfy channel films, but I saw this cos of the title. Truth or dare (2011) was a decent thriller without any supernatural stuff. Truth or dare (2018), a bug budget, good horror film. This version has some good kills but the ending was lame.

True horror with Cassie Scerbo, but the second half's too painful
Wuchakk8 October 2017
RELEASED IN 2017 and directed by Nick Simon, "Truth or Dare" concerns eight college students who decide to party overnight at a house where several similar youths died under mysterious circumstances in 1983. Some kind of malevolent entity linked to the house forces them to play three rounds of 'Truth or Dare,' with each round upping the ante. Will any of them survive?

While "Truth or Dare" begins as a haunted house flick, it branches out after the first act. In other words, the youths aren't stuck in the house the entire movie. This is good because a one-dimensional setting like that can be challenging to pull off for filmmakers, as well as tedious to sit through for viewers (but 2017's "House of the Witch" surprisingly pulled off the challenge).

The first 15 minutes or so are kinda fun due to the party element, but things quickly take a dark, serious turn. The mostly no-name cast is effective with Cassie Scerbo standing out as the main protagonist; she's not so no-name, of course, and the movie doesn't fail to highlight her beauty (and I'm not tawkin' 'bout nudity). Alexxis Lemire & Christina Masterson are also notable in the female department, as is Taylor Lyons in the prologue.

The story is deeper than it first appears, as an interesting psychological element is eventually introduced. If you like austere TV-budget horror akin to "House of the Witch" mixed with "From Within" (2008), you'll appreciate "Truth or Dare," but be forewarned: The second half becomes increasingly painful to watch due to the "Hostel"-like 'dares' the kids must face. These parts aren't entertaining in the least, but they're gripping. And the actors are convincing.

THE MOVIE RUNS about 89 minutes and was shot in the Eastern USA (no info on the exact town/state). WRITERS: Thommy Hutson & Ethan Lawrence. ADDITIONAL CAST: Heather Langenkamp from "A Nightmare on Elm Street" fame has a small role.

GRADE: B

Worst Ending Ever!!!! Like what was that??? Felt like they gave up on the ending. Also like why is it called truth or dare when literally they only did dares! Only two truths the whole movie.

Waste of time!

A Good Horror Movie... Ending is NOT hard to understand
Vienna262 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this movie! I was surprised as I expected it to be horrible. But it was never boring and I feel all the characters made smart and realistic decisions (accept the annoying Jessie who whined and complained about everything all the time). It was also fast paced so no long drawn out scenes like some horror movies have. A good amount of gore to keep you interested as well. I dont know why so many people are upset about the ending... its pretty clear to me: Both girls live. If you have the subs on it says both girls gasp meaning it appears they beat the game and both lived. Alex had to kill her friend and it seemed she couldnt so she decided theyd both share the dare one last time and die so she ran into the tree. It was most likely this was the loophole in the game as when they crashed they both seemed to stop breathing for a couple seconds afterwards technically implying they "died". But when they both gasped after a little while of silence it implies they survived the crash by a HAIR, and since all dares are now complete....theyre both free. It was a good ending in my eyes. I feel some people just want every movie's ending spoon fed to them but sometimes if you just use your brain...the answer is already there. Its a fun and simple to understand horror movie :)

well ya know, i liked it
davidmalaimo9 November 2020
I'm actually surprised at the bad reviews. this was reallly good for a syfy original and it doesn't have any CGI sea creatures (there are CGI bugs but just in or part). honestly it was pretty nasty at some parts and the people react pretty realisticallly in my opinion. i will say that after th first half hour it starts to feel a little long, then you're with it again, then it drags a bit, and then th end kinda ropes you back in. i'm not mad at the ending tho. annd there ya go. fun movie. not the best. but was exactly what i wanted when i watched it, which was just a fun engaging teen horror flick that was easy to digest.

Cliche and Unoriginal
brittanystrelluf23 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I turned this one mistakenly thinking it was a Blumhouse production by a similar name. Big mistake. A bunch of drunk college kids in a haunted house try to play a game of truth or dare that goes wrong. An evil presence forces them to play the game in more and more gruesome ways. The last 2 minutes are two female characters cutting off each other's body parts. The idea of terrible truths coming out driving character's against one another had potential to create tension but the film chose to use a "saw" method of gore to try and shock and scare the audience. Ended up being very boring and cliche.

The ending...
brittanye-8210715 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It actually didn't need an explanation of an ending... Sort of... We know that if you don't complete your date or truth you die, therefore the girl driving failed because she didn't kill her friend... Meaning the driver will die and her friend will be the survivor because she completed her 3 rounds which is why only one person lived at the beginning of when this game started with the first group of friends...

Dare that kills you or death?
kandaceivey16 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Movie was decently enjoyable. Ending was horrid and left so many important questions unanswered. The main part that bothered me (aside from that ending) was how you have to do the dare or the dare does you, but a large part of the dares would kill you. The choice was basically commit suicide or else the "dare" itself will kill you. Just made no sense. I mean...hang yourself or the dare will hang you. Get run over by a car or the dare will run you over with a car. It just made no sense. And the reasoning behind how and why all of this is even possible is never really explained! Gee this same thing happened years ago and you unlocked it by playing the game. Well, then how did it happen the first time to make this death game possible? You start off thinking maybe the house is alive or cursed and since the game has happened there before it must be the house responsible for the game being possible. However, you later find out that the game isn't even tied to that house itself so...apparently if you play truth or dare anywhere you run the risk of the game choosing you and you unlocking it? Idk...nothing really made sense in this movie. Lazy writing for sure.

Garbage- absolute trash (spoilers in here, my bad)
latakyi13 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So I was looking for the 2018 version of Truth or Dare and ran into this ridiculousness... I'm not usually the type to leave a review, but I'm so appalled by how atrociously bad this movie is that i was compelled- stirred in my spirit, if you will, to leave a review.

I'll admit it, the movie was acceptable up until the robbery scene. Like I was good and enjoying it and then it got really stupid really fast! Like, NO ONE thinks in this stupid of a manner. You can't even start to rationalize the stupidity. If you turn your head and you're all of a sudden staring down the barrel of a shot gun, regardless of the circumstance, are you going to make any suddenly movements? Like at that point, the writers should've let the game kill the guy.

Then the idea that they were going to waltz into the house and "outsmart" the game with TERRIBLE logic, and then kill the doctor because THAT makes a lot of sense! Like the thought was to manipulate the game by what is NOT specified in the directions, right? You need the doctor to revive people, stupid and ANYONE would think that way ESPECIALLY in this kind of situation!!! Also, Russian roulette is also played with knives around the fingers, so why are they holding a loading gun up to their heads? That's not smart; you can live without a hand or a foot, but not a brain - the doctor would know that better than anyone! I would've even been more accepting if the doc grabbed the gun, shot through his own hand and hit the major artery in the thigh of another person and that person bled out and died- ok, accidental death. But then these two girls proceed to cut off an earlobe after receiving instructions that's WHOLE living body parts need to be removed. Aren't they college kids?!?!? Simple math - between two people 7 whole, living body parts need to be removed; well, there are at least 40 between them (20 fingers, 20 toes- each one whole and living...), so who would be like "I'll chop off your leg," because that makes sense?!?!?!?!?

I don't know why I even watch horror movies anymore when this is the kind of garbage that's being fed to me... Something that the classics have over ALL these dumb modern horror movies- EVERYTHING made sense. Nightmare on Elm Street- these people can't help falling asleep it's a natural response, and why is it happening? Because it's a vengeful spirit. Boom nicely wrapped up with a pretty bow. Chucky- Voodoo spirit of a freaking serial killer in a child's toy and children are easily manipulated, and why is it happening? Because serial killers don't need a reason to kill people (I know he wants a human body and second chance to live yada yada). Nicely wrapped up with a sparkly bow. Truth or dare- umm Some kind of Evil spirit maybe (Definitely not clear), and why is it happening? Because maybe people should be possibly overly harshly punished for their sins?!?! Or "because we opened the door," or "because we have fears and weakness etc."

Trash, all out trash- throw it away!

well this was certainly something
hunterrodgers-8527616 October 2018
This movie literally reminded me of a film that a high school film class would make. it is probably one of the worst cinematic experiences i have ever seen. from start to finish it is literally a joke of a movie; the acting, plot, and just about everything else.

Better than the 2018 version
belica-7095729 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I actually liked it. I watched it a couple times to figure out why it ended like it did. Both girls survive. If you use the caption it shows both girls gasping for air. The screen said to kill her, not kill maddie. If you watch it over a couple times you will notice hints that Alex is pregnant and she found that out when they all were at the hospital. I was mad at first about the ending until I watched it again a few days later and I caught on to the hidden secret

Attention all masochists!!!
robie46-121 October 2018
Watching this movie especially the last 15 minutes takes a strong stomach even when you know it's all special effects. There should be a limit to what passes off as entertainment and this movie really pushes the boundaries. I like scary movies but this is more like watching someone die in a car accident.

Watched this by accident and was pleasantly surprised.

Warning: Spoilers
So I thought I was going to be watching the Truth or Dare with Lucy Hale, but not so much. Makes you wonder how these got made within a year of each other and what the backstory is there, but I digress. Here's what I liked. Despite ridiculous real-world implications being overlooked, everything stayed on a trajectory that made sense within the world of the story. Even though you never knew what the evil or the demon was, it was consistent, and I thought there were some cool elements like making things appear and some very unsettling video appearances. Here's what I was not thrilled about: I wish they didn't end the way they did but it was honestly too long anyway. I think if they spent a little more time with the last 25 mins of the movie it could've been good instead of just ok. My sense is that they ran out of time and budget, so I imagine the convo went like this. "Well, we have 2 days left, only enough money to pay two actors, we had to return all of the cars except one, but our sound effects guy is still here, we still have the house, and we have a ton of fake blood we haven't used." But we're left with the kind of mild choose-your-own adventure cliffhanger that I don't mind because at least you 90% know what happened. I have had it with completely nonsense endings that make you wonder what you watched at all. All in all, it was a little too gore-porn for me, and there was a gross -out I had to fast forward. I don't like watching people maim themselves, which made it harder to watch as it went along. It had some obvious plot holes, but not so many that they pull you out. And, in an extremely disturbing and messed up way, there was something to be said for the ways that the friends tried to help each other take the brunt of some really unpleasant tasks. I wouldn't watch it again, but if you're into the Hostel/TExas Chainsaw/Final Destination type stuff with a side of supernatural, you probably should.

People get over yourselves
saintsman-694516 July 2019
Some of you people are way too over critical. I get this isnt a great movie, but good god sone you act like it ruined you for life and you're scared from it. Take it for what it is and stop over analyzing everything. Or go write, cast, direct, and produce your own movie.
