visually interesting, atmospheric, and surreal...if painfully slow

One could easily make the case that this avant-garde experiment by Lynch is anything but mesmerizing and instead painstakingly tedious, and this argument is definitely reasonable, however, my opinion begs to differ. Once you get used to the short's exteme unconventionality and total lack of any plot or characters or even actors for that matter, it may start to grow on you. Admittedly, I, at first, found the opening segment to be incredibly dull and pointless despite the fantastic ominous background music, but then when things start to get much darker and oddly sinister as light becomes night I began to get unexpectedly hooked and found myself reveling in Lynch's surreal play on the forces of nature herself. The sequence with the steps is without a doubt the best one by far. It's genuinely unnerving as the creeping black shadows of off camera trees start to crawl into frame. The timelapsing effect makes their movements very unnatural and demented, and once again I have to praise Lynch's haunting background melodies which are foreboding to say the least.
