The musician Mk.gee — pronounced like a surname and not a URL — has managed to burrow himself deeply into a growing niche in listeners’ psyche. The 27-year-old’s subtly transfixing debut, Two Star & the Dream Police, released in February, manages to accomplish a remarkable fusion of sonic and emotional textures all while using very little — just a guitar and a few pedals. The overall impact can feel like a tear opening in the universe. During his sold-out show at Brooklyn’s Elsewhere last night, he stood drenched in the glow of...

SeriesFest, the television event in Denver, drew dozens of independent creators over the last few days and has now handed out some awards for its pilot competition.
Some 45 pilots from around the world were in competition at the tenth iteration of the festival.
Check back later this week to hear from a number of the creators about their plans to breakthrough with their own independent projects.
Winners included Shazia Javed’s Potluck Ladies and Jesse Toledano’s Broken Toilets, while Anna Camp-starring Neo-Dome, from Mark and Matt Pfeffer scooped the audience award.
Potluck Ladies won the drama awards. It follows Sumaira, Azra, and Ruby, who live in “The Wives Condos” in the suburbs of Toronto with their children, while their husbands work in other countries. They initially meet at potluck lunches, a weekly guilt-free escape from the loneliness of immigrant life. At first glance, they seem to be living perfect lives,...

Since making its debut at last year’s Fantasia Film Festival, New Life has garnered a lot of attention for its first-time writer/director John Rosman and his potentially apocalyptic chase film. I missed it during its festival run, but on the eve of its American release, I got my chance to rectify that and see if it lived up to its hype.
It starts like a conventional thriller, with a bloodied woman slipping through the streets of what looks like a typical American suburb, trying to avoid being seen. She lets herself into her house and cleans herself up. She barely managed to wash and change before she sees armed men in her kitchen. She lets herself out a window and, since they apparently never learned about guarding a perimeter,...

An indie action game akin to Max Payne, El Paso, Elsewhere is to become a film, with Lakeith Stanfield in talks to star.
Developed by indie studio Strange Scaffold – headed up by designer Xalavier Nelson Jr – third-person action videogame El Paso, Elsewhere was released to glowing reviews in 2023. Less than a year later, the Max Payne-esque shooter is to be adapted into a movie, it’s been announced.
Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura has picked up the rights to the game though his company – the logically-named Di Bonaventura Pictures – meaning it’ll share a figurative stable with such properties as Transformers and GI Joe.
According to Variety, Lakeith Stanfield – whose latest film, the irreverent comedy The Book Of Clarence, is in UK cinemas now – is to star in the adaptation.
El Paso, Elsewhere is about a vampire hunter named James Savage, whose ex-girlfriend – named Draculae – is rather awkwardly a vampire herself.

Developer Strange Scaffold has an impressive variety of games in their catalog. Last year, they published the excellent monster-hunting Max Payne-like El Paso, Elsewhere, which I consider to be one of my favorite games of 2023, but that doesn’t mean all their games are third person shooters.
They’ve got a sci-fi body horror economy game (Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator), a cutesy story-based poker game (Sunshine Shuffle), and even an adventure game where you talk to stock photos of dogs (An Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs). Even knowing the variety of both theme and gameplay they’ve worked in, I don’t think I was prepared for them to announce Life Eater, which they describe as a “horror fantasy kidnapping simulator,” which simultaneously ended up being exactly what it says and nothing like I expected.
The story setup is pretty simple: you’re a modern-day druid who lives in the suburbs,...

Pixar has revealed a new trailer for the upcoming Inside Out sequel, Inside Out 2, which arrives in theaters on June 14th. Watch it below.
When we last left Inside Out protagonist Riley, she was dealing with the mixed emotions of a cross-country move. Now reaching her 13th birthday and thrust into the knotty feelings of middle school, however, the emotional headquarters in Riley’s brain are met with some new visitors: Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke), as well as her fellow newcomers Envy (Ayo Edibiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), and Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos).
All five of Inside Out’s original personified emotions — Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear — return this time around, but the presence of Riley’s newcomers, as well as the onslaught of new emotions that being a teenager demands, threaten to change their roles forever. Amy Poehler (Joy), Phyllis Smith (Sadness), and Lewis Black (Anger) all...

Matt Reeves’s The Batman was a spectacular take on the Dark Knight’s mythos, a step away from the unusual theme of previous Batman movies and taking on a darker and enigmatic narrative. Set in Dcu’s Elsewhere, the critically and commercially hit movie’s sequel is currently in the works starring Roberts Pattinson as Gotham’s protector.
Robert Pattinson as Batman in The Batman
While the details of the sequel have been kept under wraps, it hasn’t stopped fans from creating interesting and potential plot theories that seem just too good to be true. And as per a new theory, Barry Keoghan’s dreaded Joker might just be a red herring with the true villain being even more terrifying.

The biggest night for British film proved to be a major one for Christopher Nolan. After reigniting the summer box office alongside Barbie, his atomic bomb biopic Oppenheimer led the way at the BAFTAs 2024, earning seven awards on the night – including the most hotly-contested categories. As well as Best Film, a Directing win for Nolan himself, and Acting awards for Cillian Murphy (Leading) and Robert Downey Jr. (Supporting), it bagged the likes of Best Score for Ludwig Goransson, Editing, and Cinematography for Hoyte Van Hoytema.
Nolan called it “an incredible honour” to be recognised on home turf in the UK. The ceremony took place at the Royal Festival Hall, “where my mum and dad used to drag me to make me get some culture,” he remembered. “Some of it stuck.” As well as thanking the “fearless and peerless” Cillian Murphy, and his producer – and wife – Emma Thomas (“I love you”) in his Director speech,...

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon is still No. 1 on Netflix.
In its first full week on the streamer, the first part of Snyder’s science-fiction epic racked up 34M views, making it first among the English-language film list from December 25 to 31 — and the most-watched title on the streamer. Add that to the 29M views that the film managed in its debut weekend, and Rebel Moon currently stands at around 63M views for 10 days of availability.
It’ll need to nearly triple that viewership in the next 80 or so days in order to make it among Netflix’s most popular films of all time. Rebel Moon is off to a fine start, though it’s likely the streamer was hoping for a stronger full week of viewership, considering there’s another installment and a director’s cut coming down the pipeline. For reference, Extraction 2, which is currently No. 10 on Netflix’s most popular film list,...

The concept behind Dolly Parton’s 49th studio album, Rockstar, was born out of the singer’s 2022 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which she was initially hesitant to accept due to her self-identification as, first and foremost, a country music artist. “I’m a rock star now!” Parton joked at the time, and in an ironic twist, proceeded to record an album of rock songs with a host of musical guests from the genre.
Spanning more than two hours, Rockstar comprises nine original tracks and 21 cover songs of rock classics like “Long As I Can See the Light,” featuring Creedence Clearwater Revival’s John Fogerty, and “Let It Be” with Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. The album also finds Parton putting her stamp on more contemporary pop fare like “Wrecking Ball,” originally performed by her goddaughter Miley Cyrus (who’s also featured on the track). Elsewhere,...

Even by its own ridiculously high standards, 2023 has been one hell of a year for British independent cinema. Whilst Hollywood has been all but shut down by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, over on this side of the pond, it feels like the candle for British indie cinema – and our collective love for those who make it possible – has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no surprise to see today’s announcement of the nominations for the British Independent Film Awards 2023 filled with wall-to-wall bangers that represent the very best that British filmmaking has to offer.

After years of turmoil, including drummer Travis Barker’s 2008 plane crash, singer-bassist Mark Hoppus’s successful battle with cancer, and the departure (and recent return) of singer-guitarist Tom DeLonge, Blink-182 takes what feels like a victory lap on One More Time… The first single, “Edging,” is a pop-punk stomper that, at least superficially, bears all of the Blink hallmarks. But the rest of the singles have been a mixed bag: The über-schmaltzy title track reflects on the group members’ friendship with rather prosaic lyrics—“Do I have to die to hear you miss me?”—while the fiery “More Than You Know” channels post-hardcore while also making reference to the tragedy that frequently surrounds the band.
This dynamic is indicative of the album as a whole: For every triumphant return to form, there’s an uninspired dud. On the opening “Anthem Part 3,” Blink-182’s renewed energy is immediately palpable. Two songs later,...

The debt that El Paso, Elsewhere owes to the original Max Payne is impossible to overstate. Your primary interaction with the world is to dive through it in slow motion, firing weapons that include dual-wielded pistols. Hard-boiled protagonist James Savage, whose head is made improbably square by the game’s lo-fi polygons, pops pills in order to restore health, and he makes a very specific sort of wheezing grunt when he jumps in the air. Even the levels, full of endless corridors, are heavily indebted to Max Payne’s dream sequences.
But where that game’s use of surreal imagery was mostly for effect, El Paso, Elsewhere’s oddities are quite literal: James Savage travels through a supernatural void that mashes together motels, graveyards, and more while populating these abstract spaces with mummies, werewolves, and biblically accurate angels. Traveling from one layout to the next via metaphysical elevator, James is...

Growing up I was mostly a console kid. Presently, I play a lot on PC, but when I was younger I used to prefer the out of the box ease of the console. There was, however, one game that finally got me to invest in a graphics card and figure out the whole computer business, and that game was Max Payne. I was obsessed with the tone and feel of the game, which combined the slow mo, double fisted gunfights of a John Woo movie with melodramatic neo-noir storytelling in one of the most unique experiences of the time. While so many developers have been using Quake and Doom as their touchpoints in the current wave of boomer shooters, I’ve been wondering when someone would aim their nostalgia on Max Payne and try to recapture the bullet-time shooter subgenre.

“The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon apologized to his staffers this week after a damning Rolling Stone report alleged a work environment marred by his toxic behavior on set — and it’s not the first time the former “Saturday Night Live” star has come under fire for his actions. He’s previously been criticized for not paying his writers during the currently WGA strike, for instance, and for that infamously playful 2016 interview with former President Donald Trump.
Other late night hosts have also crossed the line on a number of occasions, with Jimmy Kimmel, Jay Leno and David Letterman also issuing statements, or on-air mea culpas, asking viewers to forgive their missteps and misdeeds.
Here are some of the most scandalous moments in late night TV.

That September 26 release date for Strange Scaffold’s neo-noir horror shooter El Paso, Elsewhere will be here soon. And to get fans hyped even more (and to convince those fence-sitters), Strange Scaffold has released what’s touted as the final trailer for the game.
The trailer presents protagonist James Savage coming to a sudden and horrifying realization on his journey to stop his ex-girlfriend and the lord of the vampires, Draculae. Amongst the flood of violence, Savage isn’t just thriving—he feels good. Free to succumb to his addictions, and the pursuit of one final good act before the end of the world.
On this path towards oblivion, Savage hunts the monsters protecting Draculae, who seeks to perform a ritual that will end the world as we know it and place it under her reign. Armed with shotguns, pistols, uzis, stakes and more, the only choice players have is to keep moving forward,...

Boogaveli blasts Wayne Wonder and Surpriz’s “Enemies” from his DJ deck — I thought he was playing the song to test the venue’s speakers, but they would close Sharif’s performance with the festive 2010 track later that night. Midway through the soundcheck, Sharif resolves that he’ll walk offstage into the crowd during the third song. He jokes about taking his shirt off during...

Xalavier Nelson Jr. and Strange Scaffold know how to keep the neo-noir vibes coming with the latest trailer for their upcoming shooter El Paso, Elsewhere. Unlike last month’s stylish trailer, this one hits home that things aren’t so cut and dry with El Paso, Elsewhere protagonist James Savage, as he’s up against his ex known as “Draculae”.
Revisiting the dire situation that brought him back to his hometown and on a collision course with his former love, this trailer has Savage coming to terms with what’s ahead of him. This was always going to be a one-way trip, no matter the monsters slain or the pills taken.
El Paso, Elsewhere puts you in the twisting void beneath an unassuming motel, where James Savage must dive down a reality-bending path to stop Draculae. Armed with shotguns, pistols, uzis, stakes, and more, the only option players have is...

Netflix has revealed some viewership statistics for its original series, and it's good news for fans of The Lincoln Lawyer and The Witcher.
The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 returned to the top spot with the debut of the second half of its season.
After premiering Thursday, the David E. Kelley series managed 6.7 million views, bringing the total views for the sophomore season to 23.3 million.
The series was once in the works at CBS but was canceled ahead of a formal series order.
Thankfully, Netflix understood the project was worthwhile, and it has thrived.
The Lincoln Lawyer beat the previous week's #1 show, The Witcher Season 3.
The Henry Cavill-led Witcher has performed well, but not as well as prior seasons, fueling concerns about the imminent cast change.
As previously reported, Liam Hemsworth will replace Cavill for The Witcher Season 4.
The fantasy drama slipped to #3 for the week, coming in behind Heartstopper Season...

It was only last month when Rivers Cuomo admitted that, yeah, Weezer have maybe put out a little “too much” music in recent years. But the man isn’t regretting all of his band’s later discography, telling Vulture that he thinks their best album is — not The Blue Album, not Pinkerton — but their four collective Sznz EPs.
“Like many artists, I’m usually most excited about the thing I just made,” Cuomo said in a new feature with Vulture, while also noting that he “doesn’t do favorites.” But he did try to pick a favorite Weezer album: “I love Summer, Autumn, and Winter all for different reasons. They all came out last year. It would be very hard to choose, so I’ll just say Sznz.”
Proving his case even more, Cuomo cited a Sznz cut when asked about what Weezer song he wishes more people liked: “We...

First things first, Fear the Invisible Man is not a sequel to the 2020 version of The Invisible Man although I’m sure the film’s makers won’t mind if you think so. Instead, it’s an adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel that, unlike most adaptations of his work, keeps the book’s Victorian setting.
Griffin is in a race against time to finish his experiments. The reason, his landlord and a bailiff are pounding on the door, ready to evict him. Injecting himself with it moments before they kick in the door, his flesh and bone vanish and he escapes, though not before causing an explosion that kills them and destroys his lab.
Elsewhere Adeline is disbelievingly reading about a series of crimes supposedly caused by an invisible man.

“But Wait, There’s More,” the title of the opening track of What Matters Most, seems to suggest that, after an eight-year gap since the release of So There, Ben Folds still has something to say, and that the album might explore previously uncharted terrain for the singer-songwriter. But the song, which features a lovely piano melody and some Beach Boys-esque vocal harmonies, amounts to a relatively familiar reflection on aging and the passage of time—lyrical themes that Folds continues to mine for the majority of the album.
Throughout What Matters Most, tracks like “Kristine from 7th Grade” and “Fragile” attempt to make sense of the past and the existential crisis of middle age by examining difficult or failed relationships but too often feel trite or even patronizing. The latter finds Folds’s narrator chiding a “childlike” lover for being manipulative and abusive but offers no real insights into...

In both content and style, Brandy Clark’s self-titled new album serves as a homecoming following three bold, loosely conceptual releases that situated her in a lane distinct from the parochial strictures of country radio. Not only does the album find her singing openly about her background, including her family (“She Smoked in the House”) and home state of Washington (“Northwest”), it also hews closer to country conventions than her prior releases.
While a self-titled album is often intended as a defining creative statement, a summation of an artist’s legacy or style, Brandy Clark is more uncharacteristic. Instead of foregrounding Clark’s knack for wordplay and humor, the album announces the singer as a virtuosa, engaging with country music’s well-worn tropes with both skill and refinement.

For many decades, the “Big Three” networks dominated American television, bringing laughter, drama, breaking news and real-life events into our homes. NBC, CBS and ABC have broadcast thousands of fictional programs, sporting events, talk shows and news programs for nearly a century, with roots in radio. Television programming began in the 1940s, with the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) leading the way, establishing several firsts for the medium, and becoming home to some of the longest-running programs in the history of the small screen.
But which 30 primetime and late night scripted series are the absolute best? We rank our favorites in the photo gallery above based on quality, quantity (number of seasons/episodes), impact on society and other shows, plus Emmy Awards nominations/wins. Each show on our list has some combo of at least a few of those traits (some have all four!).

Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez headline this fantasy action adventure thriller based on the titular Role Playing Game. Co-directed by Game Night duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves ticks all the right blockbuster boxes and could find its way to a successful franchise, with a prevailing role of a D-20.
