- The crew of the U.S.S. Discovery joins forces with Captain Pike to unravel the mystery of seven mysterious red signals that have appeared across the universe.
- Burnham was an orphan adopted by her foster parents Sarek (James Frain) and Amanda (Mia Kirshner) on Vulcan. Burnham met her foster brother Spock, who gave a very cold reception to Burnham and shut the door on her the first time he met her.
On route to Vulcan to pick up its new captain after Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) betrayed the crew during the Federation-Klingon War, the USS Discovery receives a distress call from the USS Enterprise. Saru (Doug Jones) is the acting Captain on the Discovery and Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) heads the science station. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) is in charge of the spore drive. Stamets misses Culber (Wilson Cruz) who was the Chief Medical Officer on the Discovery and Stamets's lover. Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts) is the helmsman on the Discovery. R.A. Bryce (Ronnie Rowe) is the communications officer and Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) is in charge of the Operations station.
Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) takes emergency command, explaining that the Enterprise suffered catastrophic damage while investigating seven mysterious signals scattered across the galaxy, apart by 30,000 light years. After some crew from the Enterprise transfer over to the USS Discovery, the Enterprise is towed away to space dock for repairs. Six signals have since disappeared, and when Discovery arrives at the seventh location, it also disappears. Connolly (Sean Connolly Affleck) is the science officer on the Enterprise. Burnham was expecting to see Spock as crew of the Enterprise, but he was not there. Commander Nhan (Rachael Ancheril) is the other Enterprise officer who transferred over to the Discovery.
Pike addresses the crew and says that the energy required to create the signals is beyond Federation comprehension. He is not yet certain if the signals are a greeting or a sign of malice. Stamets is haunted by the memory of Culber on the Discovery and Starfleet has approved his transfer, pending the completion of Pike's mission. Sarek is on the Discovery and tells Burnham that he is in touch with L'Rell (Mary Chieffo). The Klingons have also noticed the energy signals but have no knowledge of them. Sarek also tells Burnham that Spock never fully accepted her as his sister.
Near the location of the 7th signal, the crew discovers the wreckage of the USS Hiawatha, which had been believed lost during the war, on an asteroid composed of non-Baryonic matter. The asteroid appeared at the exact location of signal. An away team is sent to the USS Hiawatha via 4 individual shuttle-crafts, since the Electro-magnetic energy from the asteroid makes transporting impossible. Tilly asks Burnham for a piece of the asteroid as the spores started reacting as soon as the ship got close to the asteroid. Connolly is killed on the way to the asteroid surface from stray debris. Pike's shuttle craft is also damaged, but Burnham saves him before he crashes on the asteroid surface.
Inside they find chief engineer Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) nursing the last survivors. Jett has been on the asteroid for 10 months now. Burnham helps repair the transporter on the Hiawatha and transports the patients and Reno off the asteroid. While helping them off the asteroid, Burnham is stranded behind as she fixes a power conduit to the transporter. Caught in a blast, Burnham wakes up with a piece of the asteroid embedded in her body. Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) sees what she describes as a "red angel", before she is rescued by Pike who comes back for her. Burnham had the sample of the asteroid in her hands, but the transporter didn't get a lock on it and didn't transport. This means that the asteroid is made of non-Baryonic matter, something that is impossible. Tilly uses a gravity simulator to capture a piece of the asteroid before it vaporizes into a pulsar. This is critical since the non-Baryonic matter will allow them to interact with dark matter.
Burnham visits the Enterprise to search the quarters of her foster brother Spock (Ethan Peck), who Pike reveals is on a leave of absence from Starfleet. Pike said that Spock had run into a question that he could not answer. She discovers a file from Spock's log that describes nightmares of the seven signals he has had since childhood.
