Danger Close - A call for fire support from either aircraft, artillery or naval bombardment when friendly forces are within extreme close proximity to the hostiles being fired upon. Generally fire support is considered to be danger close when friendly forces are within 600 meters of the target, the range increases with more powerful weapons: 750 meters for naval guns 5" and under, 1000 meters for naval guns over 5", 2000 meters for 16" naval guns. artillery, rockets and missiles with cluster munition warheads.
CAS - Close Air Support, an air strike against hostile targets in support of friendly forces that are in the vicinity of the target area, which requires a high degree of precision from the ground team in terms of relaying their exact position and the position of the enemy forces to be fired upon. CAS is typically provided by attack helicopters like the Bell AH-1 Cobra or the Boeing AH-64 Apache, fixed wing gunships/ground attack aircraft like the McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II or Republic Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt II. CAS is also sometimes provided by multipurpose attack fighters like the F/A-18 Hornet and the Marine Corps new F-35B Lightning II fighter is well suited to acting as both an air superiority fighter and a gunship as its STVOL engines allow it to hover in mid-air allowing for accurate and sustained ground fire from its 25mm 4-barrel rotary cannon & next-gen precision air-to-ground missiles.
