Mediawan Rights, the distribution arm of the wider media group, manages scripted, unscripted, format and feature documentary sales, keying European content onto international airwaves. And if initially heritage titles, foreign-language fare and time-tested perennials made up much of the catalogue, the group’s expanding footprint and well-capitalized partnerships promise a new yield of premium fare developed in-house and marked by global ambitions.
“We’ve seen a radical shift,” says Mediawan Rights CEO Valérie Vleeschhouwer. “Our catalogue from six years ago has little in common with that of today. Exclusive: Andrée A. Michaud’s novel ‘Boundary’ is being developed as a thriller series.
Montreal-based Kotv and Endemol Shine North America have struck a deal to develop the show, which will be known as Boundary Pond.
Louis Choquette is attached as showrunner and director, and the project will come to market in coming weeks. William S. Messier is writing the first two scripts and a series bible. The Sherbrooke, Québec-based writer, screenwriter, and translator wrote the docu-drama series Chicanes d’héritages for Vrai and co-created and co-scripted the web series Terreur 404, which was for Ici Tou.tv).
Kotv’s Louis-Philippe Drolet and Endemol Shine North America’s Sharon Levy and Lisa Fahrenholt serve as executive producers.
Boundary, to which Kotv had previously secured the rights, was originally published in 2014 and has received awards such as author Michaud’s second Governor General’s Award for Fiction.

Driven by French animation and documentaries, the foreign investment and international sales of French TV programs were up 18% to €325 million ($384 million) in 2019, the second highest score ever.
The figures were jointly unveiled by France’s National Film Board and the promotion org TV France International during the 26th edition of the Rendez-Vous Biarritz, which kicked off virtually on Sept. 6.
Foreign sales of French programs alone were up 12.8% to $219 million, while global deals tripled over the last five years to reach a record level of $50 million, bolstered by global platforms. The rise of worldwide deals concerned animation, as much as fiction and documentaries.
The biggest increase came from international co-productions which skyrocketed by 44% to break a 10-year record, especially for animated programs and documentaries.
Overall, international investment, including pre-sales, were up 7.6%. French animation reached an all-time record in foreign sales to $91.4 million and accounted for 40% of all sales. The U.S.

“Philharmonia,” a French thriller series set in the world of a national orchestra, has been acquired in English-speaking territories from Lagardere Studios Distribution.
“Philharmonia,” which was created and co-written by Marine Gacem, has been acquired by First Look Media’s Topic for Svod rights in the U.S., and Walter Presents for the U.K. and Australia.
“Philharmonia” was commissioned by French public broadcaster France Televisions and proved a ratings success on the channel France 2. Produced by Merlins Productions, the show follows the private and professional life of a famous orchestra conductor who returns to Paris to take the helm of the Philharmonia after a 20-year break and faces her old demons.
