Hopefully March will bring respite from crippling snow storms and frigid temperatures for much of the globe. And if it doesn’t? Well, Hulu’s got some new streaming options at least!
Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2021 are relatively slight on Hulu originals. Thankfully, one beloved original of note is coming back this month. Solar Opposites will premiere all episodes of its second season on March 26. This sci-fi animated comedy from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is a breath of fresh alien air.
On the movie side of things, Hulu is premiering Boss Level on March 5. This actioner will star the delightful Frank Grillo and the decidedly less delightful Mel Gibson. Speaking of delightful though, the documentary Kid 90 will arrive on March 12. This comes from Punky Brewster star Soleil Moon Frye and features hours of footage she shot in the ’90s that will depict what...

Disney dropped the trailer for “WandaVision,” one of Disney+’s first Marvel Cinematic Universe television series, during the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday evening.
The trailer offers the first substantive look at “WandaVision” since the show’s first tease during a Disney+ Super Bowl ad in February. The trailer doesn’t shed much light on how Vision (Paul Bettany) and Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olson) are together, but there’s a tease that Vision’s death in “Avengers: Infinity War” indeed happened. Marvel Studios has billed “WandaVision” as a blending of the style of classic sitcoms with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda and Vision — two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives — begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems. There’s no telling on how the duo got back together or how the series will play into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe
Also unclear: The series’ release date.

Tatiana Maslany will reportedly portray the titular protagonist in Disney+’s upcoming “She-Hulk” superhero series.
Deadline reported that Maslany, who has starred in titles such as “Orphan Black,” “Pink Wall,” and “Perry Mason,” will portray the superhero in the upcoming Disney+ show. The news broke several days after Deadline reported that Kat Coiro will direct the show’s pilot and several other episodes. “Rick and Morty” scribe Jessica Gao will lead the show’s writers room.
Representatives for Disney+ and Marvel did not return requests for comment.
The She-Hulk character, whose real name is Jennifer Walters, has traditionally been portrayed as an attorney and cousin of Bruce Banner/The Hulk, who is portrayed by Mark Ruffalo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tatiana Maslany is nearing a deal to play the lead role of the upcoming “She-Hulk” series at Disney Plus, Variety has learned from sources.
The series centers on lawyer Jennifer Walters (Maslany), cousin of Bruce Banner, who inherits his Hulk powers after she receives a blood transfusion from him. Unlike Bruce, however, when she hulks out Jennifer is able to retain most of her personality, intelligence, and emotional control.
Reps for Maslany declined to comment. Reps for Disney did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.
Maslany is perhaps best known for her starring role in the BBC America drama series “Orphan Black,” which ran for five seasons between 2013 and 2017. Maslany was nominated for three Emmys and a Golden Globe during the show’s run, winning the Emmy for best actress in a drama series in 2016. Director Tom Cullen reshuffles events in an intimate drama about how the messiness of life jeopardises a new relationship
Tom Cullen is the actor who had his breakthrough in Andrew Haigh’s contemporary romantic drama Weekend in 2011; now he makes an interesting and worthwhile debut as writer-director with Pink Wall, an intimate, scenes-from-a-relationship movie. We see various moments from various years in the time that a certain troubled couple are together, and the reshuffling of the narrative order somehow accentuates the poignant entropy as things fall apart.
Jay Duplass plays Leon, an amiable, unambitious American guy in London with vague plans to become a photographer, but who likes hanging out in his flat cooking, listening to music and smoking weed, generally savouring the solo mood of directionless creativity and fun.

The Chicago Critics Film Festival Runs May 17th – 23rd. Stephen Tronicek is covering the event for We Are Movie Geeeks
Today I had to arrive at 5 pm instead of 3 pm, so I had more time to explore the city. The great thing I’ve noticed about the past few days is that because Ccff replays films, it gives you time to explore and have time to yourself. Chicago is really a beautiful place to spend a day walking around.
The first film of last night’s lineup was already strong. The Short History of the Long Road, directed by Ani Simon-Kennedy is the type of optimistic, sentimental fare that we need in the trying times that we live in. Long Road follows Nola (a never better Sabrina Carpenter), a teenager living in a vintage van with her father (Steven Ogg). After a devastating event changes her life forever, Nola must...

Jay Duplass and Tatiana Maslany star in the romantic drama "Pink Wall"
The SXSW Film Festival is officially over, and the official winners have all been announced. I managed to catch 34 titles this year, but just three of them won prizes: Alice, the story of a mother who becomes an escort after learning her husband spent all their money on them (which just barely missed my top 10 best of the fest), the comedy Yes, God, Yes and the doc Running with Beto, which was cool to see with an audience of Texas liberals.

Tatiana Maslany and Jay Duplass trade six rounds of gut punches in Tom Cullen’s directorial debut Pink Wall.
I was once told by a comedy writer-director that the “joke math” in his show had to add up in order to make the audience laugh and service the story. There you can see how one gag plus one genuinely impactful character beat equals two. Still, even seasoned mathematicians would have a tough time quantifying the perfect formula for “relationship math” in romantic movies, which can become a convoluted equation depending on the kind of story a film is trying to tell.
Plenty of films have sidestepped a more complicated formula in the hopes of coming up with a romance easily solvable for audiences. Pink Wall, the directorial and screenwriting debut from Knightfall actor Tom Cullen, crumples up the formulaic boy meets girl story like it’s an unwanted algebra quiz.

Eugene Mirman — a fixture of the comedy world, but known to general audiences as the voice of Gene Belcher on “Bob’s Burgers” — has always had a very particular vision of what comedy can be. A warm and whimsical sort whose jokes (and prop-heavy stand-up) tend to poke fun at the insistent seriousness of being alive, Mirman is the kind of guy who can find humor in just about anything.
In anything, that is, except for stuffy comedy festivals that function as gatekeepers, and strangle their comics into serving up laughs on an assembly line. So, after laughing with his friends about launching a festival of their own, Mirman decided to produce his own punchline. And lo, in 2008, the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival was born at the Bell House in Gowanus.

The tragedy of Tom Cullen’s “Pink Wall” — a familiar but deeply felt achronological relationship drama in the vein of “Blue Valentine” and François Ozon’s “5 x 2” — is that neither of its central characters know they’re in a movie. The soft lighting, shifting aspect-ratios, and synth-driven music should have been a dead giveaway, but it’s easy to develop a kind of tunnel-vision when you’re in love. If only Jenna (Tatiana Maslany) or Leon (Jay Duplass) had been able to step back from themselves for a moment and see the big picture, perhaps they would have been able to avoid a lot of heartache in the long run.

Like “Blue Valentine,” a previous contender for Worst Date Movie of the Year™, “Pink Wall” is a nonlinear tale of a romance gone wrong. But with his directorial and screenwriting debut, actor Tom Cullen intentionally doesn’t leave the audience as devastated as that Derek Cianfrance film did. He offers an insightful portrait of a relationship in decay that doesn’t make us question the concept of love in general, instead offering an intimate view into the world of one couple at various points in their lives together, letting us see both the good and bad moments.

"Just trying to go back to the moment... where it changed for us." Oh boy, this looks heartbreaking. The first trailer has debuted for an indie relationship drama titled Pink Wall, which is premiering at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival in March. Pink Wall is the directorial debut of Welsh actor Tom Cullen, who recruited Tatiana Maslany and Jay Duplass to star as a couple looking back on their experiences together. The description says it's made up of only six scenes across six years, "six moments that shaped the relationship of Jenna and Leon." The music in this trailer is what makes it really stand out, there's so much emotion and so much meaning in these somber melodies. It reminds me a bit of Drake Doremus' films, but it seems to be unique in its own way. Put this film on your schedule if you're going to SXSW, keep an...

There are romantic dramas that are big on the romance and less on the drama. Then you have films that are romantic dramas in name only, as they paint a bleak picture of relationships and are sure to scare even the most confident of couples. That doesn’t make the latter any worse than the former. It just means that when you see a film that focuses on the realistic drama of an intimate adult relationship, you’re in for a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

The first half of January is always busy in the film community, as Oscar voting comes to a close and the Sundance Film Festival starts its engine. This year, the SXSW Film Festival threw its cowboy hat into the ring, pushing up the initial announcement of its film lineup instead of waiting until after Sundance. The result is an even more complex window into major festival premieres and potential discoveries that will distinguish the first quarter of 2019.
The move is partly the result of Sundance ending later than usual; while the festival normally goes until the end of January, this year, it ends February 3. The constrained timeline also impacted SXSW’s earlier submission deadline, and meant that its programming team had to scramble to lock in this year’s selection. “We were tighter about no exceptions to the deadline,” said SXSW Director of Film Janet Pierson in an interview. “We had to be decisive sooner.

HBO is reviving iconic lawyer/gumshoe Perry Mason for a limited series, starring The Americans' Matthew Rhys.
Decades before the likes of Law & Order, there was Perry Mason, the iconic criminal defense lawyer and investigator, who debuted in the detective fiction of author Erle Stanley Gardner. While appearing in a sizable stack of books, films and even a comic strip, the character was defined for decades by Raymond Burr, who starred in the original 1957-1966 CBS TV series, which was followed-up for decades by TV movies released up until the actor's death in 1993.
With the property long dormant, HBO has been eyeing a reboot effort, which, after failed attempts, is finally moving forward as a limited series that’s been placed in the hands of showrunners Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones, who both worked on Friday Night Lights and Weeds. This time around,...

Hoping for an “Orphan Black” reunion? You’ll have to wait a while.
“[Creator] John Fawcett joked at one point that when I’m like 70, we’re gonna do like a reunion special,” said Tatiana Maslany, the Emmy-winning star of “Orphan Black,” speaking on the latest episode of Variety’s Stagecraft podcast. “So all the characters will be in an old age home. I’m up for that. That is logical to me. Something too soon doesn’t make sense. Let’s see when they’re geriatric!”
