Last August, developers Fallen Leaf and Black Drakkar Games teamed up with publisher Dear Villagers to bring the world a sci-fi horror video game called Fort Solis, which was directed by James Tinsdale and featured performances from Roger Clark (Red Dead Redemption 2), Julia Brown (World on Fire) and Troy Baker (The Last of Us). Now Fallen Leaf and Black Drakkar have signed a deal with Studios Extraordinaires to develop film and TV adaptations, with the directing duo of André Hedetoft and Andreas Troedsson set to take the helm of the Fort Solis movie!
Hedetoft told IGN they were drawn to the material because “You get a super cinematic immersive experience when you play it, you have amazing characters and actors that brought them to life in the game, and you have some really creative people behind it, and I think that’s exactly the kind of dream project to do.

The concept behind Dolly Parton’s 49th studio album, Rockstar, was born out of the singer’s 2022 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which she was initially hesitant to accept due to her self-identification as, first and foremost, a country music artist. “I’m a rock star now!” Parton joked at the time, and in an ironic twist, proceeded to record an album of rock songs with a host of musical guests from the genre.
Spanning more than two hours, Rockstar comprises nine original tracks and 21 cover songs of rock classics like “Long As I Can See the Light,” featuring Creedence Clearwater Revival’s John Fogerty, and “Let It Be” with Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. The album also finds Parton putting her stamp on more contemporary pop fare like “Wrecking Ball,” originally performed by her goddaughter Miley Cyrus (who’s also featured on the track). Elsewhere,...

Dolly Parton has returned with the latest single from her forthcoming album, Rock Star: an anthemic cover of “Wrecking Ball” featuring Miley Cyrus herself. Stream the song below.
Beginning with a soft piano intro, the song crescendos into a full-on pop ballad by its first chorus, with Parton and Cyrus harmonizing the signature hook. Cyrus then takes on the second verse, as a drum part drops, and thick, distorted rock guitars add an extra layer of oomph. By the bridge, orchestral strings carry the progression, and Parton and Cyrus belt together in a call-and-response fashion, with Parton impressively taking on the higher parts.
When the song reaches its grand conclusion, the two throw in a last-second interpolation of Parton’s hit, “I Will Always Love You,” singing one round of that song’s iconic hook before finally landing on a sweet, major chord resolution. Stream the single below.

Norwegian duo Lost Girls’s Selvutsletter doesn’t quite manage the same wonders as their 2021 debut, Menneskekollektivet, but it’s another flight of fancy that dazzles in its defiance of expectations. This is due in large part to the way singer Jenny Hval uses her piercing voice to both entrance and provoke. When she sings the title of the opening track, “Timed Intervals,” she holds the last note until her voice breaks. Later, on “June 1996,” she trills a note with almost anarchic abandon, bending it up and down the scale with a playful randomness.
These choices convey the kind of unpredictability that Hval supplies throughout Selvutsletter. She sings much more here than she did on Menneskekollektivet, where her vocal contributions were largely spoken. At times, one misses the contrast that her stream-of-conscious lyrics struck with multi-instrumentalist Håvard Volden’s propulsive electronic beats.
Two of the five songs on Menneskekollektivet hover around the 15-minute mark,...

While Hollywood writers are back at work, media companies have suspended negotiations with striking actors over a new contract. Even if talks resume and a settlement were to happen soon, however, it would likely be early 2024 before the two dozen or so dramas and comedies that normally premiere in the fall make it back onto screens.
As luck would have it, though, the era of peak streaming provides a nearly limitless array of series to watch. Below are a handful of new or recent lesser-known shows, many of them from outside the United States, on smaller streaming platforms (and one over-the-air network) that can help viewers fill in gaps in their viewing schedules while waiting for homegrown favorites to return. One bonus: None of the shows below are produced by companies against whom Hollywood’s unions are or were striking this year. Unless noted, all the streamers below offer seven-day...

PBS‘s World on Fire, the engrossing British drama about ordinary people trying to survive World War II, is back after a four-year absence. It’s worth the wait. Here’s what to expect in the six episodes beginning in October 1940, early in the German bombing campaign on the U.K. known as the Blitz. 1. Home front tempers flare. Proper English matriarch Robina Chase has taken in the wife of her purpose-seeking son Harry (Jonah Hauer-King), a British Army lieutenant. But Kasia (Zofia Wichlacz)—a Polish refugee and resistance fighter- itching to return to action—clashes with both her mother-in-law and the locals. Meanwhile, a mysterious new tenant, charming Sir James Danemere, is billeted at the Chase home. (Stay out of his luggage!) 2. Desert warfare roils North Africa. Harry and Sgt. Stan Rad-dings (Blake Harrison) brave German tanks and sandstorms with their new ally, the British Indian Army’s fearless...

Despite being a country legend in her own right, Reba McEntire doesn’t have much of a leg up on the average person when it comes to contacting the one and only Dolly Parton. In a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, McEntire revealed that she can only reach Parton via fax.
“Dolly does not text,” McEntire said in a segment called “Textual Behavior.” When asked whether Parton uses email or can be reached on a landline, McEntire said her only option is through “fax.”
She continued, “I don’t have her telephone number and I asked Kenny Rogers one time. I said, ‘Do you have Dolly’s number?’ He said, ‘No.’ Maybe he said that because he didn’t want to give it to me. I don’t know.

Public television has held separate collective bargaining agreements with the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA for years. So, while studios and networks this fall faced the ramifications of dual Hollywood strikes, it’s been mostly business as usual at PBS.
Perhaps lost in the conversation about this most unusual fall — in which the broadcast networks tweaked and re-tweaked their schedules in light of the lengthy production stoppage — has been PBS’ ability to keep the majority of its schedule intact.
In fact, according to Sylvia Bugg, PBS’ chief programming executive and Gm of general audience programming, just one program on its fall lineup was impacted by the strikes: John Leguizamo’s “American História: The Untold History of Latinos,” which had been scheduled to premiere last month. In solidarity with the strikes, Leguizamo opted to delay the project until 2024. PBS replaced it with another docuseries, “Becoming Frida Kahlo.”

Dolly Parton has released the latest cover from her upcoming rock album, a rendition of the ’90s staple “What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes. As with many of the reimagined hits on Rockstar, Parton recruited one of the original artists: vocalist Linda Perry. Stream the track below.
Rather than trying to mimic Perry’s original vocals, Parton leans into her strengths on “What’s Up?” and sings “from the top of my lungs” as only she can. Three decades later, the song’s theme of intense societal pressures remains universal. Directed by Steve Summers, the video for the song was filmed at Eakin Elementary School in downtown Nashville. Check it out below.
“First of all, I love Linda Perry. Second of all, I love this song written by Linda,” the always gracious Parton said in a statement. “Third of all, I love being a part of this video to try...

New Line’s new animated movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is moving from its April 12, 2024 release date to Dec. 13 next year.
The move stems from a chain-reaction of Warner Bros re-dating today, spurred by Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two going from Nov. 3 this year to March 15, 2024, which then pushed that financier and producer’s other title, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire from that date to April 12, 2024. Dune: Part Two had to move had to shift on account of the unavailability of its cast to promote during the actors strike.
War of the Rohirrim will now face off on its new December date against Sony’s reboot of The Karate Kid.
The anime feature, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original New Line Lord of the Rings trilogy. Those Peter Jackson movies, in addition to his Hobbit trilogy,...

The adrenaline-pumping space opera Fort Solis was shown off in a trailer at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany.
The event, which runs through Sunday, dubs itself “the world’s largest event for computer and video games and Europe’s most comprehensive business platform for the games industry” and always showcases new releases.
Fort Solis, available now and developed by Fallen Leaf and published by Dear Villagers, is a four-episode playable thriller starring three astronauts played by Roger Clark (Red Dead Redemption 2), Julia Brown (M. I. High), and Troy Baker (the voice of Joel in The Last of Us).
The independent video game was made by a very small team. “Ten people, two years of work, and zero delays,” Clark shouted, literally, from the convention stage, referencing a trend in the video game industry of continually pushing back video game release dates. “It’s really beautiful to see what independent studios can accomplish today.

Dolly Parton is in her rock ‘n’ roll era, and she’s ready to become the champion of the genre. To that end, she shared her cover of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” on Friday as the latest single from her forthcoming, aptly-named album, Rockstar.
With a dynamic, guitar-driven arrangement reminiscent of Queen’s original version from 1977, Parton’s take on the song is stadium-ready. At 77 years old, she still belts with goosebump-inducing power, soaring through the anthemic melody. Add in the tinge of twangy wisdom she brings to lines about how fame and fortune have been “no bed of roses,” and the tune is elevated to a new level of insight.
Parton also closes the song with a brief interpolation of “We Will Rock You” — complete with the legendary beat, crowd chanting, and some vocal ad-libs from Parton that unmistakably confirm the fact that she will, indeed, rock you.

Health permitting, Dolly Parton has no plans to retire. The country legend rebuffed the idea of hanging up her hat in a recent UK radio interview, proclaiming that she intends to perform until the end of her life.
“I’m not one to sit around doing nothing,” Parton told host Ken Bruce, discussing her upcoming rock album and fashion book. “I would never retire. I’ll just hopefully drop dead in the middle of a song on stage someday.”
“Of course, we don’t have much of a choice in that,” Parton conceded. “But as long as I’m able to work, as long as my health is good and my husband is good, the only way that I would ever slow down or stop would be for that reason. But in the meantime, I’m gonna make hay while the sun shines.”
That hay includes Rockstar, an album comprised...
