It seems Mark Hamill wasn’t the only one who wanted Rian Johnson to spare Luke Skywalker until Star Wars: Episode IX.
Currently out promoting The Last Jedi‘s impending Blu-ray release – not to mention that buzzworthy featurette “The Director and the Jedi” – Hamill told members of the press that he was initially on board with Colin Trevorrow’s direction for the as-yet-untitled Episode IX.
The same can’t be said for Mark Hamill and The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson, given the creative duo weren’t exactly on the same page regarding Luke Skywalker and his own nuanced character arc. History tells us that Mark Hamill quickly changed his tune, resulting in what he believes to be one of the “most sophisticated” Star Wars movies ever made. But when Trevorrow was still attached to Episode IX, both he and Mark Hamill were very much singing from the same hymn sheet.

“This is not going to go the way you think.”
In many ways, Luke’s grave warning to the hopeful, wide-eyed Rey in The Last Jedi can be construed as a subtle message from Rian Johnson himself, whose screenplay and overall creative vision resulted in some of the biggest and most shocking story twists in Star Wars history.
From the sudden death of Supreme Leader Snoke to Rey’s decidedly unremarkable parents, Johnson pulled exactly no punches when delivering Episode VIII, and it’s a credit to the director’s storytelling that many of the film’s key moments are still being debated three months after release. And while promoting a new featurette called The Director and the Jedi, Rian Johnson addressed the classic ‘hero’s journey’ trope, how it relates to Luke, and why, ultimately, “myths are not made to sell action figures.”

We've already shared the first 12-minute of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi documentary The Director and the Jedi, but today we have a trailer for the film to share with you. This is a feature-length doc that has a runtime of 135 minutes. It recently premiered at SXSW where it received some positive buzz and it will actually be included as a bonus feature on the upcoming Blu-Ray/VOD release of The Last Jedi.
What's so cool about this is that we will get to see a very revealing inside look at the making this movie. This is kind of a rare thing for any movie, and even if you weren't a fan of The Last Jedi, the fact that you'll get a candid behind the scenes look at the development of such a big movie may be of interest to you. I'm looking forward to seeing how Rian Johnson works.

No matter your opinions on the movie itself, it can be said director Rian Johnson made a Star Wars movie that got everyone talking with The Last Jedi. The movie changed things up a lot and took things down a path we never thought they would go, for better or worse. Johnson is the subject of a special making-of documentary, The Director And The Jedi, that explores the daunting task that laid before Johnson in... Read More...

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” garnered a complex set of reactions when it came out in December, but none was more unexpected than the one from Luke Skywalker himself. While critics raved about the movie and fans picked it apart, Hamill revealed in an interview shortly after the release that he “still hasn’t accepted” the transformation of his iconic character from idealistic Jedi to the cranky reclusive he portrays at the beginning of the seventh installment, written and directed by Rian Johnson.
Hamill apologized a few days later, tweeting that he regretted “voicing my doubts and insecurities in public,” but his real apology tour kicked off at the SXSW Film Festival. It was there that both Hamill and Johnson showed up for a series of appearance tied to the March 27 home video release and a screening of “The Director and the Jedi,” a behind-the-scenes look at the production of the blockbuster film.

Three months after Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit theaters, director Rian Johnson turned up for a SXSW panel to discuss a new documentary, The Director and the Jedi, coming out about the making of the blockbuster film.
The doc, directed by Anthony Wonke, offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the making of Johnson's Star Wars movie, and screened at the Austin, Texas festival earlier Monday morning. It sprung from a discussion the director had with his producing partner Ram Bergman about not wanting to have the typical B-roll cut with talking heads to promote the documentary.
