- The Mysterious Case of Ms. V. is based on Virginia Woolf's short story The Mysterious Case of Miss V. The story, written in about 1904, is one of the first fiction pieces written by Ms. Woolf. The story, however, was not published until decades after Ms. Woolf's death.
At a little more than two pages, the original short story, The Mysterious Case of Miss V., is flash fiction and muses on the subject of those people that we see year-after-year at events but don't really know. In this case, the short story is about Miss V. and the narrator of the story. The short film updates Ms. Woolf's story slightly by referring to Miss V. and Ms. V. The original story is set in London. The short film is set in San Francisco in 2018.

After some time passes, the narrator realizes she hasn't seen Ms. V in months and sets out on a quest to find Ms. V.
As is the case with most of Virginia Woolf's stories, novels and essays, the writing in The Mysterious Case of Miss V. is captivating and employs Woolf' preferred narrative technique of stream of consciousness. In this story and in most of her work, the internal reality is the focus of exploration rather than the external reality. In this case, external reality suddenly comes into sharp focus when the narrator realizes that Ms. V is no longer attending parties and when the narrator learns Ms. V's died the same evening that the narrator realized she was missing.
