“Beam me up, Scotty” is a quote as iconic as Star Trek‘s once-magical automatic doors ― even if Captain Kirk didn’t actually say it. While Star Trek wasn’t the first sci-fi creation to teleport its characters around, its pleasingly sparkly transport scenes quickly captured fans’ imaginations. However, what is beamed up isn’t necessarily what is beamed down.
Simply put, Star Trek transporters, if they were real, would kill their users along the way. No matter the technicalities over moving versus duplicating the bits that make up a Trek crewman, you cannot blast a person into atoms without ending their brain functions and destroying them. You just can’t. Try it (don’t try it). So depending on how lazy a character is, a commute from a starship bridge to the bathroom could be the last thing they ever do.
It’s something that’s fascinated and vexed...

In the "Star Trek" episode "The Enemy Within", Captain Kirk (William Shatner) beams up from the planet Alpha 177 covered in a mysterious magnetic dust. Unbeknownst to any of the Enterprise crew, the dust has fouled up the transporter and created a second Kirk inside its memory buffer. After Kirk leaves the room, the second Kirk materializes ... but displays an altered personality. It seems that Kirk has been bifurcated into a gentle version of himself and a cruel, aggressive version of himself. For much of "The Enemy Within," the Evil Kirk stalks around the halls of the U.S.S. Enterprise, startling the crew and accosting Yeoman Rand (Grace Lee Whitney). Gentle Kirk soon realizes that he needs his aggression back in order to be whole. Eventually, the two Kirks confront one another.

On the 1966 "Star Trek" episode "The Enemy Within," Captain Kirk (played by one-time /Film writer William Shatner) beams up from a geological research mission covered in a rare magnetic dust. The dust causes a glitch in the Enterprise's transporter, resulting in Kirk bifurcating into two separate beings. The first Kirk to beam up contains all of Kirk's intelligence and rationality, while the second Kirk -- arriving a few moments later -- contains all of his aggression or anger. With a "good" captain and an "evil" captain on board the Enterprise, mayhem ensues.
By the end of the episode, both Kirks must face off, and then, naturally, reunite. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) points out that Kirk cannot be an effective captain without his irrational rage and aggression; as a gentle person, he's not complete. The "evil" Kirk is a madman but he's also a vital part of Kirk's core being. "The Enemy...

Yeoman Janice Rand, the character played by Grace Lee Whitney in the original "Star Trek," only appeared in eight episodes of the show, but she left an impression. By Whitney's own description, Janice Rand was a "girl next door" type, adding a relatable element to the wild sci-fi setting of a series set in the 23rd century. While Captain Kirk (William Shatner) conversed and analyzed with Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Rand was busy doing petty jobs, filing paperwork, and distributing refreshments. I can't speak for other Trekkies, but when imagining myself getting a job on the U.S.S. Enterprise, I imagine being a yeoman is all I'd be qualified for.
Whitney has said in her autobiography "The Longest Trek: My Tour of the Galaxy," that Rand was written out of "Star Trek" because she had too much chemistry with Kirk. The relationship between Janice and Jim could easily have developed into something romantic,...

This post contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
"Star Trek: Lower Decks" loves a reference. If viewers were to try to count the number of inter-franchise references dropped at rapid-speed in a single episode of the animated comedy, they'd likely lose count. Sometimes the fannish U.S.S. Cerritos crew calls attention to the show's homages and callbacks, but other times, they play out without comment. That was the case this week when, in keeping with the show's seventh episode of the season tradition, rogue tech once again tried to take over the world.
Not only did polarizing, villainous Exocomp Peanut Hamper (Kether Donohue) return in the latest episode, but so did evil computer Agimus (Jeffrey Combs) and corrupted AI hologram Badgey (Jack McBrayer). In an episode that plays around with longstanding "Star Trek" ideas about rogue sentient technology, the Cerritos crew spends much of their time in "A...

This article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks, season four, episode eight
For all of its far-flung exploration, Star Trek has always been about debates between the different aspects of humanity. Usually, that took the form of the dynamic between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, a trio replicated in some form or another in nearly every series that followed.
But in one of its earliest episodes, The Original Series bypassed Spock and McCoy and kept it all on Kirk. Written by the legendary Richard Matheson, “The Enemy Within” saw Kirk split into two people after a transporter malfunction. One of the Kirks, sporting the traditional yellow top, operates solely on impulse, which leads him to do things like assault Yeoman Rand and pick fights. The other Kirk, wearing a fashionable green shirt with golden highlights, treats his crew well, but cannot make a decision, even with Sulu freezing on a planet below.

As Strange New Worlds inches closer and closer to the timeframe of Star Trek: The Original Series, the amount of references to that iconic show are naturally increasing, almost exponentially. Although we’re still firmly in 2259, the world of 2265 – and Kirk’s Enterprise – seem right around the corner. In the Uhura-centric adventure, “Lost in Translation,” Paul Wesley returns as James T. Kirk, this time finally from the Prime Universe. In addition to having a standalone adventure with Uhura, the return of Kirk to Strange New Worlds also brings a lot of Trekkie loose ends closer together.
Here are all the big canon references and Easter eggs we caught in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 6, “Lost in Translation.”

A new Daredevil series is in development at Disney+, with Covert Affairs creators Matt Corman and Chris Ord attached to write and executive produce, sources confirmed to Deadline.
Fans have been wanting a new Daredevil series since Netflix’s Daredevil was canceled in 2018 after three seasons. Talk has ramped up recently following the appearance of Daredevil (Charlie Cox) in Spider-Man: No Way Home and main antagonist Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) in Disney+ series Hawkeye. Also adding to the project’s momentum was the recent move of all Marvel Netflix series, including Daredevil, to Disney+.
Marvel Studios does not comment on projects in development.
Corman and Ord co-created and executive produced USA Network series Covert Affairs, starring Piper Perabo and Christopher Gorham. They most recently served as executive producers and co-showrunners on NBC drama series The Enemy Within and The Brave, and The CW series Containment.
Variety was first to report the project.

A new “Daredevil” series is moving forward at Disney+, with Variety having exclusively learned from sources that Matt Corman and Chris Ord are attached to write and executive produce.
Rumors have persisted for some time that a Disney+ series about the Man Without Fear was in the works, especially considering that two of the stars of the Netflix “Daredevil” series — Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio — have appeared in recent Marvel projects. Cox once again played Matt Murdock, the secret identity of Daredevil, in the film “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” while D’Onofrio reprised the role of Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin, in the Disney+ series “Hawkeye.”
It now appears that the project is picking up steam with the hiring of Corman and Ord, although Marvel has yet to announce anything regarding the show formally.
Reps for Corman and Ord declined to comment. Marvel Studios reps do not comment on projects in development.

Richard Matheson isn't a name film fans have at the tip of their tongue. The Jersey-born writer gets a Google bump annually, as New Years' anti-celebrants fixated on SyFy's "The Twilight Zone" marathon will keep seeing his name come up in the writer's credits. "Star Trek" fans likely remember the episode "The Enemy Within," if not its writer. It was the first episode to feature a transporter accident early in Season 1. The glitch creates two Captain Kirks, one good and one evil, a franchise trope that now occurs often enough that an in-universe character can legitimately suffer from transporter phobia.

In the 18 years since he made his TV acting debut on the Disney Channel series “Phil of the Future,” Evan Peters has appeared in a recurring or regular capacity on seven more shows, including nine installments of the anthology series “American Horror Story.” Now, he has at last succeeded in capturing the attention of his peers in the Screen Actors Guild with his performance on the HBO limited series “Mare of Easttown,” which just won him an Emmy last September. If he ends up taking home the Best TV Movie/Mini Actor prize, he will be the seventh actor to win it on his first-ever SAG bid and the first since Kevin Costner (“Hatfields & McCoys”) nine years ago.
Peters’s challengers in this contest are Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”), Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), and Ewan McGregor (“Halston”). Like Peters, both Bartlett and Isaac are SAG newcomers.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 3
For fans who feel like Star Trek: Discovery is the Deep Space Nine of the 21st century, the latest episode — “Choose To Live” — will only make that case stronger. Yes, although the Romulans warrior nuns from Star Trek: Picard take center stage in this episode, the vast majority of Easter eggs and callbacks will make Niners very happy.
Here’s every Easter egg and reference we caught in Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 3, “Choose to Live.”
“Choose To Live”
The title of the episode itself is an Easter egg. The phrase “Choose to Live,” spoken by Qowat Milat warriors is used as a kind of threat, warning a combatant that they’ve still got time to back down. In Picard, Elnor used this phrase many times before destroying people with a sword.

HBO has acquired “Generation Por Qué?,” a comedic Cuban American short inspired by and starring writer and producer Jacqueline “Jackie” Pereda. The coming-of-age story follows Jackie Pérez, a first-generation woman pursuing her acting dreams in New York City while enduring her very Cuban (and conservative) New Jersey-based parents. She can chase her dreams along with her other first-gen friends, but she cannot outrun her upbringing.
“We are thrilled that HBO is giving us the platform to share ‘Generation Por Qué?’ with the world,” Pereda said in a statement. There are so many stories about late twenty-somethings trying to find their place in the world, but largely leave out the first-generation narrative — especially comedies — where the parental intrusion is among our biggest hurdles.”
Written and directed by Pereda, “Generation Por Qué?” was a 2020 official selection at SeriesFest and The Women in Comedy Festival. At SeriesFest, Pereda was awarded best actress in...

The MCU is coming to Disney+ in a big way. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, from Empire’s Malcolm Spellman and John Wick creator Derek Kolstad, was meant to be the first of these projects to arrive, but due to the nature of things, and the way that the chips have fallen during Marvel’s disrupted 2020 production schedule, it will now be released After the Scarlet Witch and Vision-flavored WandaVision.
Eventually, we’ll get to see what Marvel has planned for the reformed Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and its new Captain America, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), but we’re clearly in for a longer wait than we hoped for.

NBC didn’t bring that weak stuff when it rebooted “The Weakest Link,” which on Tuesday drew the broadcast network’s highest ratings for a series premiere in nearly two years. The Jane Lynch-hosted trivia game show recorded a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49, which was the best debut for an NBC program since “America’s Got Talent: Champions” bowed back on Jan. 7, 2019 to a 1.8 rating. A pair of fellow newbies, “Bring the Funny” and “The Enemy Within”, both matched “The Weakest Link’s” 1.2 rating, but those two sit lower in unrounded Nielsen ratings. That 1.2 rating for “The Weakest Link” may not have been off the chain, but it was NBC’s best Live + Same Day number since June 30’s “America’s Got Talent” episode — so the early fall start pretty much topped the entire summer. Keshet, best known for turning Israeli drama Hatufim (Prisoners of War) into the long-running Showtime hit Homeland, has had to tackle the Covid-19 crisis on a number of fronts. It operates a broadcast network in Israel, runs a slew of non-scripted production companies across Europe and has a burgeoning scripted division run out of Los Angeles by Peter Traugott.
The latter is responsible for shows including The Baker and the Beauty, the romantic musical-comedy that launched on ABC earlier this month, and was in the middle of putting together drama pilot La Brea, from The Enemy Within’s David Applebaum, when the production shutdown happened. This was on top of the fact that its English-language remake of Israeli drama False Flag, starring Uma Thurman for Apple, was also mid-shoot.
