A new Meek Mill song about police brutality released in the wake of George Floyd’s killing at the hands of Minneapolis cops has an unexpected featured artist: CNN’s Michael Smerconish.
The song, “The Otherside of America,” opens with President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign appeal to black voters — “What do you have to lose?” — and ends with a 2018 exchange between Smerconish and the rapper, born Robert Rihmeek Williams, who explained to Smerconish that he grew up in a neighborhood where police didn’t protect people and, thus, people had to protect themselves.
“If you go out to my neighborhood, you see seven people die a week I think you would probably carry a gun yourself. Would you?” the rapper asks in the song’s conclusion.

Amazon has released its list of every new title coming to its Prime Video streaming service in August. New additions include “Free Meek,” which covers rapper Meek Mill’s 2017 arrest for probation violations, which sparked outrage. The Amazon Prime original series will be released on Aug. 9 and will re-investigate his original case and explore allegations of police corruption.
A trio of new comedy specials are coming in August as well. “Jim Gaffigan: Quality Time,” his seventh comedy special, arrives Aug. 16. Here, the four-time Grammy-nominated comedian talks about how he doesn’t understand why we aren’t more honest about the reasons we don’t want to attend events.
“Alice Wetterlund: My Mama is a Human and So Am I,” is out on Aug. 23, features comedian and actor Alice Wetterlund as she reveals her personal struggles with peeping toms, cat-rearing, alcoholism and the secret alien conspiracy behind new country music in her breakout comedy special.

Meek Mill never set out to be an activist for criminal justice reform. Nursing a glass of green juice at a Beverly Hills hotel shortly after performing at Staples Center, the 32-year-old sometimes seems like he’d prefer to discuss just about anything else. His rap career, for one, which after nearly a decade of legal stops and starts, finally reached the level it had long promised with last winter’s platinum-certified “Championships.”
But activism — or as he prefers to call it, advocacy — is nonetheless something that’s been thrust upon him, and Amazon’s upcoming five-part docu-series “Free Meek” (it premieres Aug. 9) details how this quick, intense, yet often slyly irreverent rapper from North Philadelphia became the unlikely public face of America’s broken probation system.
“I don’t want to be a rapper who’s just this serious guy all the time,” he says. “I think most activists...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week, […]

Meek Mill offers an in-depth look at the years he spent battling an unfair system in the new trailer for Free Meek, the new Jay-z-produced docuseries set to premiere August 9th on Amazon Prime Video.
Meek Mill was arrested in 2008 on drug and gun charges, and his subsequent conviction earned him an eight month prison sentence, plus five years years of probation. But various low-level violations prolonged Meek’s probationary sentence, and in 2017 he was hit with another two to four years in prison for a pair of non-violent offenses.

Odds are, if Amazon released a five-part docuseries about the rise of rapper Meek Mill, most people probably wouldn’t be itching to see it. Sure, he’s a talented artist and “rock docs” are always fascinating, but in the new series “Free Meek,” the focus isn’t so much on Meek Mill but instead the circumstances that found the rapper behind bars for a crime that he may not have committed.

Just before taking the stage at the Bet Awards on Sunday, Meek Mill unveiled the trailer for the upcoming Amazon docuseries “Free Meek,” which uses the rap star’s incarceration to take a deeper look at America’s probation and parole system.
In November 2017, Meek Mill, born Robert Rihmeek Williams, was sentenced to two to four years in prison after he was arrested for reckless driving in New York City. Although that charge was dismissed, Judge Genece Brinkley still sentenced Mill to two to four years in prison for other technical probation violations, marking the second time she had done so. Five months later, Mill was released on bail while his case was appealed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

“Ingress: The Animation” hit last fall in Japan, but the global release doesn’t hit Netflix until April 30, fortunately, it’s bringing a little something new to the show based on Niantic’s other popular video game.
The global version of the show will feature a new musical score created by Jacob Yoffee.
In this short video, Yoffee talks about the direction he was asked to take when creating the new score for “Ingress: The Animation.”
“They said please don’t have action music,” Yoffee said. “Please don’t do what you would expect and try something very, very different.”
He said the show’s producers didn’t want anything that sounded like a familiar anime.
“It’s as if it’s live-action film,” he said. “Everything has this very visceral, primal sound to it that I think audiences are going to enjoy because it’s going to keep them questioning,...
