- TriviaJames Whale wrote about The Blue Whale in his 2007 autobiography "Almost A Celebrity". James recalled:
"My first TV show since Whale On, it was made for the satellite channel Men and Motors. I travelled to Manchester to record the whole series and we filmed fifteen (sic) one-hour shows in a week. I recorded the TV programmes then did my own talkSPORT broadcast each night from a Manchester studio. I wondered, before this all began, if I was fit enough to do it, but I got through that week so, obviously, I must have been.
The Blue Whale was recorded well in advance, so it didn't have any of the danger attached to a live broadcast, but the format was much the same as the other TV programmes I'd done in the past. It was a pretty off-the-wall show. I wanted a set with a huge fish tank and a woman dressed as a mermaid swimming around in it, but the budget didn't stretch to that, so what we finally had was a charming young lady called Zoe, a glamour model, who sat topless with a fish tail over her legs, looking like a mermaid. There was no swimming pool for her to float around in; instead she sat in a paddling pool for the duration of the show. [...] The Blue Whale did remarkably well. Considering we were going out on a satellite channel at one o'clock in the morning, the show still managed to pull in around 250,000 viewers each time it aired."
