Michael and Eddie had been long friends before the video. The friendship started in the 1980's, as Michael was a fan of Eddie's and vice versa. They met after Eddie mocked Michael's masculinity in his stand-up film Eddie Murphy: Delirious (1983). Much to Murphy's surprise, Michael found it hilarious and even provided material for a hypothetical fight between the two in Eddie's next stand-up film Eddie Murphy: Raw (1987) (namely, the strong profanity and Michael adjusting his hair mid-fight).
Actor and comedian Eddie Murphy has a short-lived music career. The song "Whatzupwitu" appeared on his third album Love's Alright.
The video starts off in black-and-white. When Michael Jackson shows up, it turns into color.
The group singing and dancing around Jackson and Murphy is the Harlem Boys Choir.
The second music video Michael Jackson and Eddie Murphy collaborated on after Michael Jackson: Remember the Time (1992).
