If you are going to have a six part series. You really need to be grabbed by the first episode and think you are in for a rollercoaster ride with twists and turns.
By the end of the first episode of Gold Digger. I thought this could be wrapped up by the second episode. I doubt it has the legs to be a six part series unless the writer has some real surprises.
The first episode starts off with a wedding and then goes back 12 months.
Julia Day (Julia Ormond) an attractive divorced mother of three is celebrating her 60th birthday alone. On a trip to the museum she encounters the much younger Benjamin (Ben Barnes) who invites her out.
An affair develops and when Julia announces her relationship to her three adult children, it goes down like a lead balloon. Her two sons are unsure of Benjamin's motives, is he a gold digger?
By the end of the first episode we do wonder what exactly is Benjamin's motives? After all there are five more episode to go, someone must end up as a psycho!
This just came across as a nicely shot but bland middle class drama. I was not left with a feeling of waiting in anticipation for the next episode even though the whole series was then dropped on Iplayer.
The main thing of interest about the whole thing so far. The characters of Julia and Benjamin are played by actors with the same first names.
