Ending too rushed
iainmcleod_8008 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The first half of the movie was too slow, 2nd half too quick. There was too much of nothing happening, and some of the script wasn't great - like the forced "this is my sister, he's his best friend etc". Then everyone except one girl dies within the space of 4 minutes. Come on. And the final girl was the character that had been least developed and we care so little about. Also the full story was never really explained. Bored of films like that now. I thought that the two guys who were best friends for years were good actors, just held back a little. The others did an ok job.

Warning: Don't bother watching.
MikeHunt107510 October 2019
A couple purchase a nice big new house in a dying town for a steal at an auction. However, no one told them anything about the houses past. Locals moved away because of the events that took place there, and the new owners and their friends are starting to realise the steal may cost them their lives.

Sounds interesting enough when you describe it like that, but the movie suffers from one god awful rushed ending. It's like half a script was written and given a green-light to shoot it, but either made the mistake of not having written a good ending first; made the mistake of hiring an amateur to finish the 3rd act, or ran out of money and filmed whatever came to mind first on the last day of filming. Had this movie had a decent ending, it could have been a decent flick.

It obviously had a budget, and the filmmaking is fine, nothing wrong with that, nor the editing or actors. It's the amount of unanswered setups that lead to nothing with no pay-off that leaves you wondering why they bothered to go with the direction it took? Especially when the tagline of the movie is "look out for the signs" that are supposed to be warning them... bad answer *buzzer sound*. Nothing really of the sort takes place, its a misleading tagline.

It's not a horror, maybe more suspense/thriller, but not a great one. It could have been a decent supernatural themed movie, but like I said, nothing set-up pays off, and the stupid rushed ending ruins the entire thing.

I'd recommend you skip this film, don't bother with it, and not even check it out if the chance comes along to watch it for free. It's just a disappointing hour and a half of your life you won't get back.

Poor Pacing
shmarie1 October 2022
This movie had a good concept. It was a tried-and-true concept, but reliable. That being said, there were two major issues w/ the movie. Th first was the poor pacing. Everything was very boring for the first 3/4ths of the movie. The final quarter of the movie felt rushed to me. Its comparable to fire work shows that slowly lets off a few non-remarkable fireworks and then hurriedly light them all off at the very end. The second issue is the godawful acting. To be fair, the script didn't give the actors & actresses much to work with, but they need to go back to acting class. The cast also didnt appear to have chemistry amongst one another or something, so the final product looked just that much more forced. There are many good movies out there to watch or re-watch. I would skip this one.

Interesting property and grounds, but dumb as all get out
DebraIonaVogel15 June 2022
My husband enjoyed looking at the house and seeing it's potential, but it stopped there. It was definitely in a California wildfire zone.

But, the plot...

A man and his girlfriend buy the property to start a weed farm. Yet, oddly, they don't have a single firearm of any kind.

They're out in the middle of nowhere. May I suggest a shotgun?

If they'd had anyway to defend themselves, this movie would have been four minutes long.

Also, the bad guys looked like their makeup was done with a grocery store Halloween kit.

It's a pass...

I enjoyed it, worth a watch for sure. 8/10

This movie isn't bad as some reviews say it is.

I definitely enjoyed it and thought it was well done. The acting and plot is well done and it does exactly as it's intended to do: bring suspense slowly until you finally understand more and more about what's really going on in the area they went to. Give it a watch for sure!

Not bad...not great.
suzannebainbridge19 January 2023
Ususal thing, group of friends staying in a house in the middle of nowhere. No phone service etc very standard plot line.

The charactors weren't bad and even though we had the usual drinking session it was refreshing that there wasn't the standard women in skimpy outfits and sex scenes just for the sake of it.

Acting not too bad.

Jump scapes and some decent enough bloodiness.

But over all just "not too bad" and not too great.

The worst big was what was the ending? I don't want to add spoilers but the end was just who/what and why.

Thats all I can say but I have to use a certain minimum amount and just can't think of anything more to say about this so so film.

Poor Pacing, and it Made No Sense.
icocleric1 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The pacing is awful. At first not much happens, and it's very slow going. Then within a couple minutes everyone dies except the final girl. Just bam, everyone dies!!

The plot makes no sense too, so these two ghosts are trying to warn them of danger. Assuming they know their killer. Then all of a sudden when everyone except the final girl is dead, and she doesn't manage to kill him by ramming a pitch folk through his chest. The ghosts have the power to kill him? But they didn't????

And neither did the two dead friends who died slightly earlier? To save their friends? Nope they all pop up at once, after the final girl has gotten away.

Then there were smaller details that annoyed me. Like the "cultish symbol" gotta get everything in there. Then you have the long list to why the place is spooky, because throw I'm everything. It was a bit of a mess with too many things going on.

The actors also couldn't sell it.

Warning, good modern horror. Don't buy the low ratings.
picassovegas-912-72415030 November 2019
First let me say this is a nice modern horror is a very good cast. I was expecting the same old cliché of cheating couple and hidden secrets between friends. This film contains none of that. So it gets a 5, just for that. I loved the diverse cast and I really thought the whole cast did a nice job. Let me say again I really felt the acting well it was.. Great, okay I said it. I actually liked everyone in this film. Now Rashad(Pritesh Shah) Had a small part but he made me smile had a slight comic element to his part. Peter Sabri(Philip) That guy can act! I gave this film a 7. I might have underrated it. They say that budget was $250,000. I would say the budget has nothing to do with this film or script Nice job.

Meh...
rellegett10 November 2023
Definitely wasn't what I was expecting. The movie turned into more of a gore/slasher style movie, which wasn't what I had expected. Based on the write up I figured the movie would be spooky, more like a psychological thriller. The attempted jump scares were poorly done and scenes that were supposed to be scary were cheesy at best.

The acting wasn't greatest, some characters definitely demonstrated more skill than others. The first 3/4 of the movie was drawn out and the end was definitely rushed leaving little suspense. If you're into C, maybe B rated movies then give it a go, but if you like top notch graphics and acting, then you might want to pass on this one.

Well Crafted, Creepy & Eerie
ivieobrien17 October 2019
This movie was entertaining and easy to follow. I loved that the characters didn't do stupid things that no intelligent human being would do, but rather made moves anyone who was scared to death would do. Great writing and awesome cast. Will watch again and share with friends. Thumbs way up!

Far more enjoyable than expected
kannibalcorpsegrinder15 October 2019
Heading out to a remote house, a group of friends arrive to look over the property and prepare it to move in, but when they're inundated by strange dreams and visions of something in the house with them they realize what's going on around them and must get out of the house alive.

There was more to like here than expected. One of the more enjoyable features here is the strong sense of atmosphere throughout here that comes from some far more chilling scenes. The early parts of the film focus nicely on the quick flashes of a figure crossing behind someone's back that they're unaware of or showing gnarled fingers reaching out to grab them, giving off some great hints that something is going on. The later dreams are just as creepy, with the vision of the ghost girl contorting herself to chase after the victim or the later one featuring the murder of the family taking place at the house and help to give this one more context for the last half of the film. This final half is where this one sets itself up as being rather enjoyable. Dropping the supernatural aspects with the random mention of the real history behind the house, the shift in tone and appearance into more of a slasher film complete with a human killer, and some traditional elements found in that scene. From the discovery of the bodies and realizing that the killer has already been there to a fine series of stalking scenes throughout the grounds of the house which has some suspenseful moments and decent kills in the process. Coupled with a fine, imposing killer that looks suitably appropriate to handle the physical activity here and a fine, brisk pace that allows this to zip by, there are some entertaining elements There are a few flaws here, and they all stem from one place in the generally weak story. There's no storytelling going on here at all, shifting from the appearance of the ghosts at the house which doesn't cause any concern about why they're there especially since the twist at the end makes the fact that they're there at the house pointless. This one should've given them a reason to be there by spelling out the backstory on the house since that's dropped in a haphazard manner an hour into the film with no warning and missing plenty of holes in what it's trying to get across. All it does is serve as the motive to suddenly introduce the human killer for an unknown reason which would've been great to get more info on if we had more time here which is not the case and the biggest detriment to the film.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.

Odd Directing Choices, Slow Start
Forestofmyown9 May 2022
I went into this movie wondering why it had 3.3 stars when the preiview looked so good, so I might have been paying a bit to much attention to detail in the beginning. But it seemed like this movie got a great location; the house has some amazing details THAT WE ALMOST NEVER GET TO SEE because the camera tends to stick to the same angles or focuses on the actors. Honestly, most of the movie takes place in the kitchen from two camera angles.

As for the script, it seemed like the writer was trying to hard to be casual? The actors were certainly giving it their all, but it was rather awkward at times.

That all being said, I forgot about all those things around the halfway point and was invested. I stuck around for the end. All in all, I didn't hate it. Can't say I recommend it, but I wouldn't be put out to watch it again. The scares, once they really got going, were pretty good, though I personally hate gore and this could have done without.

EDIT: It occurs to me now that I assumed some things at the end of the movie that were never actually said. So I suppose the movie doesn't really explain much itself.

Worth the watch
pntdhorses9 November 2019
Started off slow but the acting wasn't too horrible so I hung in there. Definitely develops its pace and actually turned into a nice little horror movie. So I would suggest being patient and you won't be too disappointed.

Not bad low budget thriller.
iamshawnieb31 October 2019
No it won't win any awards or be the indie darling of anything. But for what it is, it's not that bad. It starts off a bit slow paced but there are definitely really good qualities to the film.

The shots look good - specifically the night shots. The acting isn't bad. And the scares actually work. I'd say if the first 45 minutes played a little more like the last 30 it would be straight up good.

A very slim budget with a small cast and I assume a small crew created a film that mostly works. There are a lot worse out there that get millions of dollars to be made with (nightmare on elm street remake, childs play remake, 71 versions of the amityville horror).

Finally people of color!
nulevel-4068716 October 2019
Very refreshing to see different backgrounds (and a gay couple) on the screen. Usually horror movies have the typical good girl/bad girl, hero characters but this film seemed to get it right with casting. For that alone, I loved this movie. But it also had a great storyline and some good scares.

Just in time for October.
AlexanderJones549415 October 2019
In a year that's been pretty bleak for Horror, this film was a refreshing good time. Likable characters, well written, and the acting is strong from start to finish. It's a nice take on the "haunt or help" storyline we've seen in the past with a cool slasher addition. There's also clear homage paid to other classic Horror films, which is always great in my book. I'll share this around for sure. Looking for something different to cleanse your pallet of all the bad Horror flicks this year? Need a movie to enjoy this Halloween season? Look no further.

Good Film
ridenextwave17 October 2019
There are definitely some minor flaws with this film, but when you look at the $250k budget it far exceeds other film with million dollar budgets. It is fast paced, and beautifully shot.

Excellent Horror Movie
nextlevelcontinues17 October 2019
I came in not expecting much of this film, but to my surprise the movie was actually really good for a low budget horror film. I still don't know how they were able to pull it off because when you look at it in terms of quality, the production was top notch.

The cast was consistent and very believable with great chemistry between the actors that made it very enjoyable to watch.
