With Netflix constantly pushing their latest originals and newly acquired blockbusters on subscribers’ feeds, it’s becoming harder and harder to go off the beaten path to find less mainstream, underrated sci-fi titles to stream. Here are a few hidden sci-fi gems to type into the search bar if you’re looking for something you aren’t likely to find on your Home Screen doom scroll.

The Block Island Sound
A mysterious threat from the ocean deep—or perhaps somewhere even more nebulous—growls ominously in the background of The Block Island Sound, a moody psychological drama whose sci-fi elements reveal themselves in morbid fashion. The family drama at the center of the story is the going concern here, but the looming external forces give the movie an interesting metaphor to pivot from. It’s...

Exclusive: Michaela McManus (The Village) is set as the female lead in ABC’s national parks drama pilot from Rashad Raisani and A+E Studios.
Written and executive produced by Raisani, the as-yet untitled drama is a “soapy” procedural set in the world of national parks. It revolves around the tangled, messy lives of the agents who work for the Isb — an elite law-enforcement unit responsible for solving all serious crimes that occur in our country’s 81,000 square miles of protected land.
2022 ABC Pilots & Series Orders
McManus will play Audrey, a beautiful but completely unaffected young Park Service agent, a “wild at heart rule breaker” with a big heart and self-deprecating sense of humor who loves the wilderness. Amazingly intuitive, Audrey can size up a crime scene like a modern-day Sherlock Holmes. Her mother was killed by the infamous Wild Flower Killer when she was just 11, and she has been raised ever since by Hugh,...

Exclusive: UTA has signed writer, director, producer and actor Jim Cummings (The Beta Test) for representation in all areas.
Cummings most recently partnered with Pj McCabe to co-write and direct The Beta Test, also producing and starring in that genre-bender, which premiered to critical acclaim at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. IFC Films released it in the U.S. in November.
Cummings also wrote, directed, produced and starred in the acclaimed short film Thunder Road, which won the Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, along with SXSW’s Special Jury Award and other honors. No category of movie inspires passionate devotion quite like the horror genre. Although “Star Wars” groupies and superhero buffs might give them a run for their money, serious horror fans let their love of monsters, slashers, aliens and demons inform virtually every aspect of their lives. Part of that unmatched intensity is due to the vast history of the genre itself. While Lucas’s “Star Wars” and Richard Donner’s “Superman” kickstarted their fandoms in the late 1970s, horror’s filmic roots stretch back to the silent classics of the early 1900s, meaning there are literally countless titles for fans to discuss, debate, collect and obsess over.

Even with new titles on VOD and streaming charts, the Oscar nominations may shake things up. Netflix received 35 total nominations among 14 titles, providing an unprecedented chance to see how many titles return to charts. The two top performers to date have been “Hillbilly Elegy” and “The Midnight Sky.” Nomination leader (with 10) “Mank” barely caused a wrinkle on the charts, placing tenth for a single day when it was released.
Currently, the dominant VOD titles are Sony’s standard-price ”Monster Hunter” and PVOD “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.” However, the other #1 is Nicholas Jarecki’s “Crisis” (Quiver) in its second week. The tripych of opiate-crisis stories starring Gary Oldman and Armie Hammer showed initial response last week and is now tops at Apple TV (which often foretells success later at other sites). For some reason (possibly a listed price of $9.99?), it doesn’t show up on the top 500 titles at Google Play.

March brings breezes loud and shrill/stirs the dancing daffodil. Bit of poetry for you there. What Sara Coleridge fails to mention is that March also brings season seven of Brooklyn Nine-Nine to Netflix UK, more weekly episodes of Riverdale season five, a brand new sci-fi series from the creators of Misfits, a new film directed by Amy Poehler and a host of cool animated series.
The One (pictured above) is an eight-part British series created by Howard Overman about a near-future world in which a DNA test can track down your perfect partner. It’s adapted from John Marrs’ novel of the same name, and yes, has a strikingly similar premise to US anthology sci-fi Soulmates. The streaming wars are just as fiery and competitive as ever. Disney+ now has one Marvel TV show under its belt (WandaVision), with another one to come in March (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier). In response, Netflix is broadening its reach with its list of new releases for March 2021.
Netflix always features plenty of international options for viewers across the globe, but March is the first month where it seems as though international releases make up roughly half of Netflix’s originals. Matilda Lawler has landed the titular role of Flora in the Disney+ original film Flora & Ulysses, which has Alyson Hannigan and Ben Schwartz attached to play the parents. Based on the popular children’s novel, Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures, by Kate Dicamillo, the adaptation is being directed by Lena Khan. Gil Netter is producing.
