- After starting a job at an eerie hardware store, Sam Coleman (Hugh McCrae Jr.), an anxious young man, uncovers a shocking mystery involving a missing employee. With the help of Sarah (Sarah José), a cynical coworker, Sam plunges into the dark corners of the store and is forced to confront the terrifying forces that lurk just behind the walls.
- In the opening scene, a young employee named Keith sneaks into the dark warehouse of Brooke's Hardware Store on a mission to uncover secrets. With a bright-red lantern in hand, he climbs a tall ladder to investigate a mysterious noise. Before he is able to finish his search, he is attacked by an unknown force and knocked off the ladder. His fate is unknown.
Later at Brooke's Hardware Store, the impatient and overbearing general manager named Brian desperately pressures Gene, the exuberant assistant manager, to hire anybody to help out during the Black Friday season, insisting it does not matter who it is.
Then, Sam Coleman, an anxious young man, attempts to apply for a job in a drive-thru line, but is comically rejected. He sits in his car, giving up hope of ever finding a job, when suddenly his phone rings. Gene offers Sam a job at Brooke's Hardware Store, which Sam gleefully accepts.
Sam rushes to Brooke's, where Gene shows him a training video and gives him a tour. During the tour, Gene and Sam find Brian suspiciously locking the warehouse that Keith entered in the opening scene. Gene brushes it off, and then introduces Sam to a sarcastic coworker named Sarah, who quickly trains Sam and shows him that she does not take her job very seriously. Sam spends his first shift alone on the register. He then realizes how easy the job is going to be and definitively decides to keep the position.
The next morning, Sam returns and joyfully works his shift, eventually meeting a strange and awkward coworker named Bill. He bonds with Sarah in the break room, revealing to her that he is in community college and eventually wants to transfer to medical school. Sarah warns Sam that Brooke's is a creepy store, and he should not let the job take over his life. As if to prove Sarah's point, later that evening Sam finds Gene creepily staring at a wall in his office while the lights flicker ominously. Sam is freaked out, and he leaves his shift feeling uneasy.
However, the next morning, Gene arrives at work in a jolly mood, which eases Sam's fears. Working in a new section, Sam tries to locate Sarah, but finds a strange pile of bubbling black goo instead. Later, Brian finds Sam and orders him to finish out his shift in the gardening section. There, Sam encounters a creepy customer, who is not moving in the aisle. Sam tries to talk to him, but the creepy customer does not speak back, and attempts to grab Sam's walkie-talkie. Sarah rescues Sam and warns him that she sees the same strange customer always hanging around, and he should be avoided. Sam's fears about Brooke's continue to grow.
During his next shift, Sam tries to see if the creepy customer is still there, but instead finds another puddle of black goo. Attempting to find something to clean up the goo, Sam wanders into an eerie supply closet lit by a piercing red light. Sam finds a journal written by an old employee, which is full of messages warning about the hidden evils of Brooke's. Sam shows the journal to Sarah, who realizes it was written by Keith, her old coworker who mysteriously disappeared from work. After some debate, they decide to break into Gene's office to find Keith's employee file and figure out what happened, but find that Keith's file is empty. Then, Bill surprisingly informs them that Brian hides secret files in a closet near his office. Despite Sarah telling Sam to wait for her, Sam decides to explore the closet by himself. After finding the closet locked, Sam is caught by Brian, who threatens to fire him for sneaking around. Sam is shaken by the encounter, and has an emotional moment with Sarah. However, Gene cheers Sam up by offering him a full time position at Brooke's.
The following day, Sam tells Sarah that he wants to accept Gene's offer. Sarah tells him not to throw his life away working at such a miserable job. They argue, but when they are stopped by Gene, Sam spitefully accepts his full time offer in front of Sarah. Sarah angrily reveals to Gene that they sneaked into his office to figure out what happened to Keith, but Gene reassures them that nothing is wrong by showing them Keith's file. It says that Keith received minor injuries from his fall but is otherwise unharmed. Sam cowardly takes no responsibility for also breaking into Gene's office, so Gene writes a report to Brian about Sarah breaking the rules.
The next morning, Bill shocks Sam by revealing that he overheard Brian firing Sarah over the phone. Sam confronts Brian about it, but Brian only mocks him. Sam is infuriated and decides to attempt to find out what is in the secret closet again. He pays Bill to distract Brian, and steals Brian's keys to the secret closet. He breaks in, and to his horror, he finds Keith's real file which reveals the truth: Keith was killed on the job and Brian covered it up. Sam is horrified, and he hatches a plan to destroy Brooke's for all of its corruption.
With Gene's backup, Sam convinces Brian to let him be in charge of the store for Black Friday. Brian miserably explains to the whole crew on the morning of Black Friday that they have to hit a certain quota, or the store will go under. Just as the Black Friday rush is at its peak, Sam's plan begins. He tells Bill and a new set of temp workers hired by Brian to go home, and then sabotages Gene working at the register. Enraged, Gene horrifically scratches his own face, scaring Sam and the remaining customers. Gene runs away to his office as all the customers rush out of the store, leaving Sam to celebrate his victory taking down the corrupt Brooke's Hardware.
The film then cuts to a flashback showing more of what happened in the opening scene. Keith is revealed confronting Brian in his office, attempting to put an end to Brooke's Hardware Store's corruption, just like Sam. He steals Brian's keys, locking him in his office, and enters the warehouse to find proof of Brian's wrongdoing. Keith is now seen from Brian's perspective being pushed off the ladder and killed by mysterious figures. Brian screams at Keith to stop, but he is too late. He sobs to himself.
In the present day, Brian confronts Sam about sabotaging Black Friday. As he yells at Sam, the film cuts back and forth to Gene in his office, staring at the wall again in an inhuman way. Brian tells Sam that he is not the evil one, that all he has ever done is try to keep his employees safe. Gene then screams at the wall to tell him what to do. Brian tells Sam that he only fired Sarah to keep her safe, as she would have been punished if she discovered the truth. Then, as Gene is sitting in silence, he finally hears something communicate back to him. He then listens as the wicked voice of the Brooke's loudspeaker announcer supernaturally gives him instructions from behind the wall, and he becomes ecstatic and exits his office.
Brian worriedly gives Sam his keys. As Brian screams at Sam to keep the doors locked and "keep feeding them," Gene appears, and brutally murders Brian with a hammer. Gene hits the chains off of the warehouse and shadowed figures drag Brian's body into the warehouse. Absolutely terrified, Sam runs for his life, until he encounters the creepy customer from earlier, and yells at him to get out of the store for his safety. However, Gene appears, and reveals that the customer is on his side, and he begs Sam to join them. Confused and terrified, Sam slashes at the customer with his box cutter as he walks towards him. The same black goo that Sam had found in the store earlier leaks out of the customer's hand. Sam realizes the customer is not human, and he slashes the creature's neck, killing him.
Gene is enraged, and screams at the store for help. Suddenly, dozens of mysterious demonic creatures emerge from behind the walls, and chase down Sam with Gene at the lead. Sam finds refuge in the closet lit by the red light, which seems to repel Gene and the creatures. Sam begs for an explanation, and Gene goes on to tell him that he has been guiding a group of lost demonic souls by growing new bodies for them in exchange for his own power. He explains they all have been feeding off the store for decades, but now that Brian is dead and Brooke's will go bankrupt, they will be free to escape into the world and conquer anything in their path. He tells Sam that if he gives them the keys to set them free, he can join them and live an eternal life of purpose. Sam is about to comply out of fear, but then remembers his human bond with Sarah and his desire to fight for himself. He refuses to give up the keys. But Gene runs to the power grid to turn off the red light. Thinking quickly, Sam fashions a lantern with the red light bulb like Keith did, keeping himself safe even without power. Gene runs into the room to kill Sam, but Sam ignites the lantern, and slashes Gene's throat. Gene falls to the ground and dies. Now surrounded by the creatures, Sam leaves Sarah a voicemail, apologizing for not sticking up for her and resolving to fight his way out in the face of death.
Finding a hidden pool of courage, Sam grabs an ax and easily kills all of the demons in a rock 'n' roll montage, who are much weaker than they appear. Victorious, Sam hobbles out of Brooke's and says his final goodbyes to the defeated store. However, as he is exiting, one final demon runs out into the street. But Sarah is waiting outside after hearing Sam's voicemail, and kills the demon with a baseball bat. Sam and Sarah reconnect and celebrate, having finally taken down the evil of Brooke's Hardware Store. They light the store on fire, and look forward to the endless possibilities of life. The film ends with a page in Keith's journal that reads "We did it, Keith," catching fire, as Sam and Sarah cheer at the store being engulfed in flames.
