HGTV is about to make Barbie fans’ dreams come true with the ultimate home-reno series based on everyone’s favorite doll: “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge.”
Premiering this summer, the Ashley Graham-hosted four-episode event is launching ahead of the July 21 release of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie as part of a giant cross-network promotion across Warner Bros. Discovery linear channels to support the much-anticipated Warner Bros. Pictures film.
“Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge” will feature eight teams of HGTV superstars (and one Food Network star) as they transform a Southern California home into a real-life Barbie Dreamhouse, as supermodel Graham — who has her own Barbie modeled after her and will be driving a Barbie pink corvette on the show — hosts. The teams will overhaul areas of the home with an era-specific style, such as an early 1960s atomic age kitchen, a ‘70s disco vibe for Ken’s Den and a main bedroom decked out in ‘80s glam.

Update: A Cook County, Illinois judge has dismissed former Windy CIty Rehab cohost Donovan Eckhardt’s defamation claim against the program’s showrunners.
Judge Patricia O’Brien Sheahan ruled that Eckhardt’s contract called for legal disputes to be settled in a California courtroom. His attorney argued that it would be burdensome for witnesses to travel across the country to testify.
The judge rejected that argument, saying remote testimony could be allowed, obviating any physical travel needs.
Eckhardt is appealing the decision. The second season of the show featured his cohost Alison Victoria lamenting her partnership with Eckhardt and various business dealings.
Eckhardt and Victoria (real last name Gramenos) are still facing legal matters concerning work performed on the rehab houses featured on the first two seasons of the program.

Windy City Rehab is getting an extended second season. HGTV has ordered nine additional one-hour episodes for season 2 of the popular home renovation show. The new episodes are slated to premiere in late 2021.
Windy City Rehab has been a ratings success for HGTV, drawing more than 20 million viewers since its season two premiere. It also ranked as the No. 1 cable program among M25-54, upscale P25-54, upscale W25-54 and upscale M25-54 and a top 5 cable program among P25-54 and W25-54 in its Tuesday timeslot.
Season 2 had ended in December under a cloud of legal woes for the show and host, designer and home reno expert Alison Victoria. During the season, Victoria and former co-host Donovan Eckhardt were sued by a couple who alleged shoddy construction on a home project, but the lawsuit was ultimately resolved. Ty Pennington’s new HGTV series “Ty Breaker” has a pretty cool concept and a really good title — so which came first, the idea or the pun? TheWrap asked the “Trading Spaces” and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” alum exactly that.
“The concept for the show came first and once we realized how important a big change to a certain area of the family’s home was … we realized it really was the ‘Ty Breaker’ in which design they eventually chose to go with,” Pennington told TheWrap. “And let’s face it — it’s a great title (laughs).”

HGTV, known for dozens of programs that focus on home makeovers, is doing some remodeling work on a non-traditional structure: its programming lineup.

In one new series, “Everything But The House, host Lara Spencer will take viewers along as families declutter and downsize their homes. Ty Pennington is getting his own HGTV series, “Ty Breaker,” in which the former TLC “Trading Spaces” standout and ABC “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” host will help “desperate” families decide whether to rehab their current property and stay in it, or to renovate a new home to “better meet their needs,” according to the show’s logline.
Though it might sound crazy, “Ty Breaker” is actually Pennington’s first HGTV series. He’s only appeared on the popular cable channel as a guest star over four episodes of the recently rebooted “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” which was hosted by “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
(If the “Ty Breaker” concept sounds familiar, by the way, it’s because home-renovation series are understandably running out of approaches. Also, it works.)

One of the great guilty pleasures for viewers of Hgtv’s popular and long-running House Hunters series are the couples whose wish lists are polar opposites.
She, a squirrel trainer, wants something downtown, where she can presumably booze it up during the day even with three kids. He, a hat blocker, wants something less than the two-hour commute her choice would create. He likes modern. She wants something with local flavor. All of that with the type of large kitchen and bathrooms usually seen in Texas while they shop in Paris with a modest budget.

Alison Victoria, the host of Hgtv’s Windy City Rehab, has the same concerns many homeowners have as the pandemic crisis continues. She has seven homes currently in various stages of construction and the clock is ticking on their loans in a luxury real estate market that’s currently dead and unlikely to quickly revive. The former Kitchen Crashers host addressed her worries this morning on the Leading From Home podcast, hosted by business podcaster John Roa as a segment on his The John Roa Show. The segment focuses on executives and leaders from around the country on how they are coping in this time of quarantine. In Victoria’s case, she’s pondering whether the major investments needed to rehab her properties will pay off in an uncertain future. Her Hgtv show focuses on rehab and flipping of residential homes in her native Chicago, but it’s also her full-time job.

The new year is off to a rocky start for the stars of Hgtv's show Windy City Rehab. Alison Victoria and Donovan Eckhardt are among several defendants named in a lawsuit filed by the owners of a $1 million Chicago-area home featured on the series. The stars of Hgtv’s Windy City Rehab show apparently are on the outs. The Chicago Sun-Times reported on a series of angry texts from Alison Victoria to some disgruntled clients, saying that she does not want former contractor and partner Donovan Eckhardt “to “f— with my life or business any more than he already has.”
The angry message came after Eckhardt apparently bounced a check. Earlier, Victoria posted on Instagram that she was working with a new general contractor.
The text came to light as part of a filing in a lawsuit by a Chicago couple alleging shoddy workmanship and fraud. Victoria told the couple she would make good on Eckhardt’s portion of the check, which aimed to reimburse the couple for a new roof. The one they installed after the rehab leaked.
Eckhardt did not respond to a Sun-Times request for comment, and Victoria declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Hgtv’s Windy City Rehab stars Alison Victoria Gramenos and Donovan Eckhardt have resolved at least some of their differences with Chicago officials over code and permit violations.
The stars were blocked in mid-summer from filing new work permits by the city, which issued several stop-work orders. That put the series in jeopardy, since it focuses on restoring Chicago homes, as its title suggests.
Eckhardt’s real estate developer and general contractor licenses were suspended by the Chicago Department of Buildings, That meant they couldn’t work on the properties in development, and finding new ones was futile.
Now, the city has apparently been satisfied on some aspects of the dispute, and some of the stop-work orders have been lifted. However, new work orders are still barred, dating back to the mid-summer suspension.
The issue was work performed without a permit, working outside of plans approved by the city without permission,...

Leanne Ford, like a normal person, loves using the color white generously when designing her spaces. My wife does not, which means I lose the argument in front of the swatch-wall every time.
With the “Rock the Block” star on the phone ahead of her big series premiere, I asked the designer of “Restored by the Fords” — her other Hgtv series — to explain to me how to properly explain to my wife why white rules.
“I just really believe in white paint. I think it is the blank canvas, and what it does is it allows everything else in the room to shine and be important,” Ford said. “It’s really fail-proof. It always looks good, it always looks current, and it always looks timeless. There’s no white space through time that you think, ‘That looks dated.'”
