It is possible that one day an excellent narrative feature in the vein of The Big Short, BlackBerry, Dumb Money or Margin Call will be made about MoviePass, a company built––and destroyed––by several larger-than-life figures. For now, we have Muta’Ali’s documentary MoviePass, MovieCrash, which provides a broad overview of the deal everyone knew was too good to be true: a company that, for about a year, was so obsessed with subscriber growth that they offered customers the chance to see one movie per day for only $9.95 month.
Inspired by a series of Business Insider articles, MoviePass, MovieCrash features interviews with the company’s founders Stacy Spikes and Hamet Watt along with other company––insiders including Mitch Lowe, the man who would ultimately take Spikes’ position. In a bit of good luck, Muta’Ali gets the interview with Lowe just weeks before he’s indicted on securities fraud alongside Ted Farnsworth,...

In the aftermath of the 2020 election, Donald Trump had a testy exchange with Kim Kardashian, the celebrity criminal justice advocate who had engaged with his White House multiple times before.
According to an excerpt of Jonathan Karl’s new book Tired Of Winning, Kardashian was lobbying the White House for more sentence commutations in the weeks before Trump’s presidency ended. But, according to an excerpt of the book featured in Axios today, Trump demanded “a straight up quid pro quo,” asking her to get football stars to visit him at the White House. But she was unable to do that because Trump “had become too toxic.”
After Trump was out of office, Kardashian reached out to the former president’s office for his endorsement of her efforts to secure clemency for those serving time. Trump called her directly, Karl wrote, and claimed that she had voted for Joe Biden.

Liz Cheney caught Republican hell for doing one good thing.
The Wyoming representative earlier this month was ousted from her perch in the party’s leadership for daring to suggest the election was not rigged against former President Trump. In the weeks leading up to the vote to strip her of her standing as the third-most-powerful Republican in the House of Representatives, Cheney was attacked by her former allies, from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) saying he’d “lost confidence” in her during a hot-mic moment on Fox News,...

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough weighed in on the increasing division in the Republican party Monday, saying it’s led to what is essentially a three-party split in American politics.
“You bring up a great point,” he told “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski during a discussion of Rep. Liz Cheney’s Axios interview from the weekend. “We have three parties in America now: We have the Republican party, we have the Democratic party and we have the Insurrectionist party. I think it’s really important for people in the media to recognize that and to listen to what Liz Cheney is saying.”
He noted that observers would be wise not to dismiss Cheney’s Republican ideals — like her support for voter identification laws — as being “just as bad” as other Republicans’ insistence on upholding former president Donald Trump’s lies that the 2020 election was somehow stolen.
Brzezinski previously noted, “The Republicans...

Do not adjust your WiFi settings. No, you are not experiencing a severe case of Deja Streaming-vu. HBO Max’s list of new releases for May 2021 are indeed highlighted by two very recent WarnerMedia hits.
For starters, Tenet finally makes its long-awaited HBO Max this month. Mark your calendars as May 1 is the day that you can finally watch Christopher Nolan’s latest cerebral thriller. Of course, Tenet already had its theatrical release, but obviously that was not really an option for many of us. In addition to Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984 makes its triumphant return to HBO Max this month on May 13. The Wonder Woman sequel already premiered on HBO Max this past December, now it’s getting a second run on the streamer.
In terms of newer originals, May is relatively light for HBO Max. The Jean Smart-starring comedy Hacks premieres on May 13. The latest Adventure Time...

Caitlyn Jenner is going for the Golden State’s gold medal in a possible bid to take on Gavin Newsom to be California’s next governor.
The 1976 Olympian and Keeping Up with the Kardashians star is in serious conversations about putting her name on the ballot to face off against the besieged incumbent in a recall election this fall, Deadline has confirmed. However, what the ultimate result of that intention both tactically and strategically will be is Tbd, we hear.
As first reported by Axios today, Jenner has been sitting down with GOP operatives of late about attempting a repeat of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s toppling of Gray Davis back in the 2003 recall – the last time such a political earthquake hit the home of the San Andreas Fault.
As tantalizing a prospect as such a high-profile candidate might be for some Republicans looking to secure a ballot-box coup in California, the...

London-based sales agent Dogwoof has snapped up Sundance-bound documentaries “Ailey” and “Captains of Zaatari.”
Directed by Jamila Wignot, “Ailey” will world premiere in the U.S. Documentary competition. Dogwoof will handle international rights, while Cinetic will oversee North American sales.
The outfit has also snapped up the debut feature by Ali El Arabi, “Captains of Zaatari,” which will launch in the World Documentary competition. The film was added to the Sundance doc competition earlier this week.
“Ailey” is billed as an immersive profile of ground-breaking African American choreographer Alvin Ailey, founder of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Last night’s wild Axios interview with President Trump scored the HBO program a 33% total viewership bump from its average so far this year.
A total of 136,000 viewers tuned in to see Trump make an utter fool of himself with Axios reporter Jonathan Swan, according to Nielsen Media Research. That may not seem like a large number, especially compared with the millions of viewers who have since watched the interview online, but it is still a decent amount above the show’s usual audience of just over 100,000 total viewers.
The interview currently has almost 3.5 million viewers on HBO’s YouTube channel, and is the number one trending video on the platform. All told, it has been viewed over 40 million times across all platforms, including social media. A clip of the interview on Axios’ Twitter account alone currently has around 36 million viewers.

The March 15 episode of documentary-news series “Axios” on HBO featured an interview with congressman James Clyburn that was notable not just for its newsiness — the South Carolina Democrat likened Republicans’ relationship with President Trump to that of Germans with Adolf Hitler — but also for its intimacy. Clyburn and Axios CEO Jim VandeHei demonstrated a rapport as they sat on the same side of a conference table in the news organization’s office, facing one another, discussing the Democratic primary and political landscape. When the interview ended, they shook hands.
It was a stark contrast to the lead interview on “Axios” a week later. Sunday night’s episode kicked off with reporter Jonathan Swan interviewing China’s ambassador to the United States, Cui Tiankai about the novel coronavirus. The occasionally combative exchange took place via Zoom, the videoconference software that has become a sudden staple of many U.S. businesses that...

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in March 2020.
March 2020 is an extremely HBO month for HBO.
What we mean by that is that the list of new releases for the month contain a lot of the hallmarks of the HBO brand that the network has built over the years. There is the third season of an expensive and popular sci-fi series with Westworld season 3 premiering on March 15. Then there's also the requisite new David Simon series when Philip Roth adaptation The Plot Against America premieres on March 16.
If that weren't enough, March 2020 sees the arrival of a big ticket superhero movie with X-Men: Dark Phoenix arriving on March 21. It's not a good big ticket superhero movie, but still! You may want to rewatch it all the same. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is a sort of superhero movie itself.
