In Xo, Kitty, teen matchmaker Kitty Song Covey (Anna Cathcart) sets out on her very own adventure of romance and independence at the Korean Independent School of Seoul. Yes, she’s ready to kick her love story with long distance boyfriend Dae (Minyeong Choi) into high gear and connect to the memory of her late mother Eve, who also attended Kiss. But Kitty also has a major problem: She’s tired of living in the shadow of her older sisters Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Margot (Janel Parrish).
After all, Lara Jean’s high school experience was so exciting it birthed three whole rom-coms — the To All the Boys movie franchise, which introduced Kitty as a precocious and meddlesome tween. Whether you’re a longtime To All the Boys fan or total newcomer, you may wonder if you need to rewind to Kitty’s TaTB past to enjoy her Xo,...

There’s a very specific emotion I felt while watching Expats, Lulu Wang’s drama series about American expatriates in Hong Kong: frustration.
There was also admiration, of course, and enjoyment and suspense, but at some point, while watching the performances of Sarayu Blue and Brian Tee, the indignation set in: We could have been seeing them do this kind of work this whole time?
It’s a reaction that uniquely arises when you finally witness the full potential of someone whose face (if not name) has been a familiar presence on screens for quite a while, but almost always in a supporting role where they are serving the story — just not their story. These artists tend to disproportionately hail from historically excluded backgrounds, often cast to make an ensemble diverse but usually relegated to bridesmaid and never the bride. When a classmate learns that new girl Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) has recently moved in with the Walter family, she practically squeals with excitement. “You’re like the luckiest girl in this whole school,” she gushes, describing Jackie’s situation as “boy heaven.”
The comment is more than a little tactless, considering Jackie was only taken in by the Walters after losing her entire family in a car accident. But it’s also an accurate diagnosis of the fantasy that Netflix’s My Life With the Walter Boys is meant to represent, in which prim and pretty Jackie finds herself living among all the most eligible teenage bachelors in town. Alas, dull characters and sluggish pacing put a damper on the daydream before it ever has a chance to properly ignite.

Aubrey Plaza and Noah Centineo were seen mingling during a night out at a movie theater this week.
The 39-year-old The White Lotus actress and the 27-year-old To All the Boys actor were spotted chatting in the lobby of a local cinema on Thursday night (September 28) in Los Angeles.
Noah was joined by his friend Brandon Caruso, who is actually dating his sister Taylor. They have been together since 2015!
It’s unclear if Aubrey and Noah are friends from the past, if they’re going to work together sometime soon, or if they simply ran into each other at the theater. We’d love to see them in a movie together though!
Aubrey recently opened up about the movie role that she lost out on and how it left her “hurt.”
For those that don’t know, Aubrey has been married to writer and director Jeff Baena since 2021.

“Sex Education” was never about the sex.
Ever since its 2018 debut, Netflix’s raunchy teen comedy was first, foremost, and unflinchingly about friendship, love, and self-discovery. Otis’ journey (Asa Butterfield) in Season 1 is not sexual exploration with partners, but of unblocking his own difficulty with masturbation and finding his calling as the school’s sex therapist. Everything that came after (pun intended) — for all the characters, including the adults — followed suit.
The show spotlighted queer love from the start, with the out and proud Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), Otis’ best friend. Trials faced by Eric and the show’s growing cast of queer characters started with the familiar — daily homophobia, the anxiety of coming out — and went on to address more nuanced issues, like how different queer people understand each other, gender dysphoria, religion. The show’s fourth and final season sees a handful of previous regulars now attending the spectacularly queer Cavendish College,...

With his work spanning decades of TV and film, and a warm presence that’s equally radiant across screens big and small, John Corbett has made an illustrious career from being “that guy” in “that rom-com.”
The 62-year-old actor is perhaps best known for his role as Aidan Shaw: Carrie’s second choice on the ’90s smash hit “Sex and the City” and the second-most controversial character in its contemporary Max spinoff, “And Just Like That…”
Corbett is equally celebrated for his breakout film performance as the leading man in indie darling “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” Nia Vardalos’ treasured love story from 2002 tells the tale of a sheltered woman and her enormous, meddlesome family introducing Corbett’s dashing fiance character, the magnanimous school teacher Ian Miller, to countless kooky relatives, the Greek Orthodox Church, and the healing power of Windex.

“Summer’s end is around the bend just flyin’” according to the great John E. Prine and Patrick James McLaughlin, whose song “Summer’s End” appeared in Season 2 of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” covered by Phoebe Bridgers and Maria Taylor. This applies to reality as the seasons and months change, but also to Jenny Han’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” which just wrapped its second season on Prime Video. Why don’t they make great romantic comedies like they used to?
This age-old question has become a tiresome one these days, though Hollywood—especially streamers—is continuing to give us reasons to keep asking it. For every “The Big Sick,” “Rye Lane” or “Bros”—brilliant films that manage to use genre tropes in fresh, lean and inventive ways—there seem to be multiples of “Happiest Season,” “To All The Boys” and “Red, White & Royal Blue.”
That last title is playwright Matthew López’s feature debut and a frustrating entry into the rom-com genre. It’s not because it’s particularly bad—thanks to some occasionally inspired moments and delightful leads, it’s watchable—but because it’s bloated and undisciplined through meandering excesses that stubbornly hold it back from becoming the sizzling charmer it could have been.

While “Love in Taipei” promises transportive and transformative escapades with its adaptation of Abigail Hing Wen’s novel “Loveboat, Taipei,” the story’s core strengths are undervalued in the translation from book to screen. This Paramount Plus feature, centered on a young woman embarking on a life-changing overseas journey, only pays lip service to the struggle of a first-generation Asian-American caught between two worlds. Instead, it places more emphasis on her romantic entanglements with two young men who all too often motivate her foundational change. Director Arvin Chen cleverly brings us into her psyche through whimsical aesthetic techniques and fantastical asides, but doesn’t make her emotions palpable enough to touch our hearts.
Eighteen-year-old Ever Wong (Ashley Liao) has always felt like an outsider in her tiny suburban town of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, being one of only three Asian-American students in her predominantly white school. Her parents (Jacko Chiang and...

Former child dancer Maddie Ziegler shared how she feels about growing up on television.
“I have blocked out so much of my childhood that I actually don’t know what my life was like before I was working,” Ziegler told High Low with EmRata podcast.
She also said that she doesn’t remember the things that she’s done as a child, even when other people post old videos of her dancing, calling the gap in memory a “weird” experience.
As she recalled her childhood perfectionism, she talked about how she had to unlearn that mentality because she “was so hard on [herself].” The dancer-turned-actress won numerous awards and titles throughout her dance competition days.
“They’re plastic trophies and crowns,” Ziegler said. “Where are they now? I don’t want anything to do with them. Why was I working so hard for those?”

Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” lassoed the top spot on domestic box office charts, collecting an underwhelming $60 million in its opening weekend.
That’s a decent amount of money for a tentpole that’s aimed at older audiences, but “Indiana Jones 5,” one of the most expensive movies ever, cost $295 million before marketing. It’ll take a heroic feat, one that would test even an enduring legend like Indiana Jones, for the fifth installment in the decades-old franchise to become profitable in its theatrical run.
It was a disappointing weekend at the box office as “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” a $70 million-budgeted family film from DreamWorks and Universal, cratered in its sixth-place debut with $5.2 million. In addition to “Dial of Destiny” and “Ruby Gillman,” the DC superhero adventure “The Flash” tumbled to the No. 8 spot in its third weekend of release with $5 million, another embarrassing 67% drop. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is gunning for the top spot on box office charts.
The fifth and final adventure to star Harrison Ford as the legendary, globe-trotting explorer is targeting at least $65 million from 4,500 North American theaters in its opening weekend. The latest Indy installment is also debuting day-and-date at the international box office, where it’s aiming to add $80 million for a global start of $145 million to $150 million.
Those ticket sales are decent in the current moviegoing environment, especially for the fourth sequel to a decades-old property that’s aimed at older audiences. But Disney spent a mind-boggling $295 million to bring the action-adventure to life. That’s not including marketing costs, such as a no-expense-spared premiere and afterparty at the Cannes Film Festival where much champagne was tippled. Even in the best circumstances, it’ll take a heroic feat — and a lot of nostalgia from long-time...
