A feast for the eyes, but only the eyes so far...

... and a fantastic female lead, but the story suffers from the same flaw that has dominated Scott's later work.

The conflict- or in this case: Ongoing battle- between religion and science would maybe work as a heavy handed metaphor, and the shortcomings and unavoidable plotholes would be excuseable. And it's not like he hasn't always utilized some on-the-nose symbolism before, but it remained under the surface. Here it seems to become the center of the story.

And as a storytelling device it doesn't really work for me so far. It might overcome this thanks to the aforementioned qualities, and I'm curious enough to give this a go.

If you are into Sci-Fi this will be best tv show to watch this year. For episode 1 all i can see that it really is a Sci-Fi drama filled with amazing cast, great soundtrack and deep story.

I can't ask for more. Ridley Scotts continued and expanded sci fi univers. Is packed with beautiful sci fi horror and a great story behind it. Mother is amazingly played by Danish Amanda Collin.

I love Sci-Fi especially Ridley Scott Sci-Fi, and this episode blew me away. Don't listen to the negative reviews, they just don't have the intellect to understand this show. This show is so different than anything I have ever seen in in a Sci-Fi show and that's why I gave it a 10/10.

This is exactly what I expected when I saw the trailer, great start, the mesmerising atmosphere, the music, and sound effects, there isn't a lot of shows like this I hope they make more of this, to be honest, this is the most interesting thing to watch I hope they continue like this

Raised by wolves, more like playing house with an eerie android who would surprisingly go rogue, definitely not seen in blade runner and other Ridley's works! Wow, so original, so shocking! Definitely didn't cringe while I witnessed the protagonist butcher the entire ship and kidnap their kids, out of, I don't know, her maternal instinct? The same instinct that wasn't around when the five children died? Like she's got this supersonic weapon (I totally didn't laugh every time she shrieked), shapeshifting technology, embryo life support, but she just couldn't save the children that she loved so much? The same instinct that knowing the planet's environment is bad for her kids (She was so loving when she let her kids sleep under a roof with holes! So nice of her to let the snow in so that her kids could enjoy the scenery! Compared to that, catching a cold and die was such a small price!), but still insisted to stay and when this father objected, she simply 'retired' him, as if life on the planet wasn't hard enough? As if she and the kid alone could last long? I'm so curious why but I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation and a logical motive! So looking forward to the next episode!

(Sigh) It's a pity, really. I once had high hope for this one. Shame on Ridley (Maybe it wasn't his fault, but the writers.) for making something so illogical. Scifi? Nah, knowing Scott, this show could be anything, but scifi. And I'm afraid this is where we part ways. To those who would keep on watching, I salute. You folks are the real pioneer.

Stunning, promising, Wow

I really liked the first episode, I don't give it a 10 because come on. It's the first episode, I'm getting used to the story but I'm loving it. Worth watching! This is the quality I expect from any tv show, good acting, original, visually stunning. I'm really excited about this show :) Westworld was a failure to me and this looks great! I just hope they give it a good ending, I'm tired of good shows being cancelled or ruined because they over-extend them till the point they don't know what to do. If you're an alien fan you'll love it! My blessings for Raised by wolves!!!!

I know there is more to write. Why did Marcus ascend i want to see more,

hoping you will comeback with a 3rd season. Looking forwward to it.

Truly bizarre bordering upon the horrific

There is such a lack of good sci fi today that while looking for something new and exciting to watch I stumbled upon this entry. Seeing Ridley Scott was attached as director I entered expecting good things, and I will say in one area where this series does shine is in presentation and the visual element.

I wish the same could be said for the story line however. Aaron Guzikowski is a screen writer with a few notable credits to his name including 2013's Prisoners which I felt was long, drawn out and rather anti-climatic, a soggy blanket of a film really. Another of his series starring Jason Momoa was recently cancelled which is also telling. I'm not sure what he really is trying to do here in episode I, but it would have been nice to list this title as also belonging to the horror genre for those unsuspecting to see disturbing images.

Two androids, the likeable father and the rather bizarre mother arrive on Kepler 22-B with 12 human embryos sent into space by an atheist group as earth had become uninhabitable due to global war. They set up shop rather quickly, and start trying to raise their humans. Food is basically a crop that looks like a cactus and they appear to build what appear to be dovecotes. While the children age mother instructs them the value of science over the imaginary belief of religion to the point of unquestioning devotion in her curious pupils. Father seems relegated to utilitarian tasks and as usual per Hollywood plays little to no role in the children's upbringing. Illness and tragedy leave only one child, Campion, alive and the mother unit starts to "malfunction". Father unit detects the religious group's ark spaceship in orbit and wants to contact it so that their sole remaining human child is cared for after the androids cease to function. Mother objects and kills Father.

Later they are contacted by a landing party of the religious group and mother and the remaining child feed them and agree to let them stay for the night. One of the party recognizes mother as an android and sees she is malfunctioning. They attempt to take Campion back to their ark ship as their android attempts and fails to shut down mother. This is where the science fails folks. The mother android can suddenly spit face melting venom and kills most of the party. Travis Fimmel's character gets away to a ship which is then taken over by mother and he is thrown out , although not killed. She flies the ship up to the ark, somehow uses her abilities to imitate Fimmel and is given clearance to land. More strangeness in the shades of Black Mirror ensure as she shrieks sonic pulses at the crew causing them to go splat. Finally she engages the ship to crash into the planet, thereby destroying it, not before taking the ships few children back to Campion and their home.

I've seen some bizarre sci fi in my day, and I'm not afraid of a little horror if given ample warning and that it has an interesting story, but here this combination of bizarre elements feels like a bad fever dream. Even the costumes and props felt very low budget for this being an HBO show, I've seen better from Star Trek TOS. This was only slightly better imho than Saturn 3 which starred Kirk Douglas and Farah Fawcett and that was pretty bad. Not to mention that the entire episode just really left me feeling depressed after seeing all these small children die off in varying ways, and the one interesting and likeable character Father gets killed off. The only redeeming thing about this was Ridley Scott's camera work which left me just intrigued that I'll stick around for episode II.

Disturbing but really interesting!

I couldn't take my eyes off the screen! Really good sci-fi, and I just kept being surprised. Haha, and moved and repulsed and curious what would happen next. Lots of unanswered questions, so I look forward to seeing more of this story with time and more episodes.

First episode felt like watching some 80's sci-fi movie. The idea behind it seems cool, but the story just felt silly, then the religious idiots come looking like some crusaderlooking idiots with shields.. i mean come on. Pretty starved for sci-fi if this is a 10. The whole OP adroid gore just seems lazy over the top. I mean they had comm's to be in contact with the arc, maybe heads up they found an android with a kid or "omg the adroid is killing us"... geesh. I'll watch the second episode since im stupid for sci-fi and hope...

Weak story, not good sci-fi

Let's look at a few of the ways that this fails hard:

The heavy handed and childish characterisation of religion and science/atheism to set the scene of two warring factions.

We are told that Mother and Father are androids sent out by the science faction with a dozen frozen embyos to ensure the survival of the Human race (in an atheist flavour).

But what I see is that the mission is equipped with no technology to ensure the survival of the children, no medicine, no industry, no agriculture beyond bare bones monocultutre farming, no education beyond indoctrination in "religion bad, mkay".

A dozen embryos, not really a diverse gene pool.

From a science fiction story telling perspective it is weak in the extreme, almost like the writers have no clue about what would be involved in a mission to colonise a new planet and worse, are too lazy or arrogant to read some actual science fiction to find out - this is a well explored subject in sci-fi litetrature.

When the believers turn up in their amusing costumes, Mother suddenly turns into an indestructable weapon that the crew of the spaceship have no way of stopping despite aparently winning the war.

There are a lot of brown-nosing in the reviews, but science fiction needs more than mad robots and flashy camera work - a well researched and detailed story is also needed.

"We knew that no matter what happened, Mother and Father would always keep us safe..."

The androids' ship skids to a precarious stop, teetering at the edge of an abysmal chasm. Father greets Mother and his programming tells him that her well-being is a priority for him. Likewise, his will be hers. When they exit the ship Mother slips very lightly, catching herself in the nick of time, staring into oblivion below. The androids have a problem.

They start their trek into the dry new world with a dry old joke involving a back-handed compliment and Mother says she feels optimistic. Father picks up a piece of dead wood, noting some plant material not thriving inside it.

After setting up their self-expanding dwelling, they "initiate" Trimester One by hooking up six humanoid embryos to Mother via lines leading from her abdomen to embryo vats. She gives the command to Activate. Nine months later comes the Disconnect and Father pauses with a hammer at the apex of a swing when he's compelled by a programming cue to attend to the situation in the dwelling. The androids harvest five silent, inactive, and underweight infants from boxes. When they remove the sixth infant, they see that he's not breathing, so Father says they'll have to "break it down; feed him to the others" as their programming dictates. The infant is like any other material thing, so it only stands to reason that dismemberment and compulsory cannibalism will be practically a necessity, scarcely. Mother insists on holding the infant briefly (before "it" starts to rot). She has a touching connection with him; holding him to her I/O port/breast, humming tearfully and shaking her head rhythmically as bulging veins throb in her forehead and Father becomes confused. The infant starts to come around and Father's confusion gives way to another programming directive that they'll name the youngest of Generation One after their creator - Campion. Mother seems as though she may now be experiencing very much happiness and she says that it's a "strong" name and he seems deserving of it. The Creator apparently endowed Mother with something he perceived to be a necessity in abundance.

A few years later, the kids all sit around like potted plants in latex body suits, comically being fed benign-looking gruel by Father as Mother charmingly weaves textiles. Campion narrates that it was hard for the androids to keep the children alive, but at least they never complained or lost their temper (and apparently the bad stuff wasn't their fault). The androids appear to be quite strong as they pull massive serpentine dinosaur bones from the ground and raise them high. They show the colossal obscurities to the kids for entertainment.

One of the little girls, Tally wanders off one day and falls down one of the deep holes in the ground (not exactly never to be seen again). Mother responds abundantly; picking up Tally's straw voodoo dolly and encircling her head in the air with it, howling like an animal at the chasm.

Campion narrates that he's learned "this world isn't like Mother and Father. It doesn't care if we're happy, and it doesn't get sad when we die". Likewise, Mother and Father are not like the world, but at least they care. Sadly, the remaining children are progressively developing a characteristic illness and dying, and Campion says he still believes in Mother and Father. As he and the last of his departing box-baby siblings sit by the fireside with Mother, she conveys a lesson with half clear-eyed absolutism that the new civilization the children are seeding will be built on humanity's belief in itself (and they'd better believe her about that). She says the reason science hasn't helped the dying children is because "we have more to learn". When Spiria coughs Mother shushes her, cares for a moment, and then compels her to list the (probably infinite) ways in which the number five relates to all manifestations of life. When Spiria later succumbs to the illness she's the fifth child to die, leaving Campion alone to continue the new civilization.

They dig a hole for the girl's body and the she-bot appears to be overloaded.

Later on, Mother needs Campion's compliance in focusing on task-oriented behaviors, so she 'comforts' him in his grieving by fooling him into thinking he's seeing Spiria again; summoning the dead child like a virtual apparition by mimicking her voice and executing a brute force hack into Campion's eyes and mind via virtual retinal display. She uses the spirit of Spiria to manipulate Campion not in the spirit of Spiria. Well, "just like" love will do.

When Father sees that the interesting Mithraic arc has arrived, he decides to try to contact them and instructs Campion he may have to deceive the Mithraic to fit in. Father implies that Campion will be a good liar and then artfully lies to Campion about the likelihood that the Mithraic would administer repairs to the androids and happily keep the 'family' together. He needs Campion's compliance with the plan. He happily suggests that they lie to Mother by not telling her they're making contact; they should tell her when it's too late for her to stop them and it's OK that Father is going down one of the pits to get to their ditched spaceship because there aren't really any serpents in the pits and the androids lied to the children for security reasons.

Mother has a schizo-levitation regression back to her former unwholesome Necromancer identity via a bug involving her memory files (she's light as a feather, stiff as a motherboard). When she awakens, a critical systems check doesn't happen and she loses her temper with Campion when he lies badly about where he was all day. She then savagely decommissions Father during a spat regarding the pending arrival of the Mithraic; impaling him on a serpent fang and cramming her hand into his chest to rip out his CPU/heart. She lies abundantly to Campion about Father's untimely demise, and later as she sleeps Campion listens at her chest for a heartbeat; it's not there.

Campion makes a distress call from the spaceship, and it tumbles into oblivion in a downward spiral of staggering destruction when he unsuspectingly touches the fascinating controller orb with his hand. He barely makes it out alive. Mother meanwhile digs in the dirt like a rabid animal; panting and growling like a dog and pulling up serpent bones with white fluid dribbling from her mouth for no worthwhile purpose. She becomes useless to humanity. She won't budge and Campion lies down helpless beside her overused body as a cold spell moves in.

A Mithraic lander team arrives and spends the night despite Mother's politish attempts to dissuade them from staying. The Mithraic debate the possibility that Campion may be the special, special, poor little blessed and woeful orphan boy of one of their many, many intriguing mystery prophesies, and they ultimately conclude they can't leave him there because for all they know she may have killed the others.

The commander of the Mithraic team tries to lure Campion up to the ark without Mother, enticing him with talk of other kids his age and animals. When Mother intervenes, she's beaten vigorously and kicked into the fire by the Mithraic he-bot. He throws her around and pounds her with relentless hateful gusto, stomping on her face as hard as he can. But that's OK because she's just a she-bot and so he can just be vile without fear, for his security. It's even OKer when it turns out she's an entirely different and unwholesome identity; proficient at frying men with the scathing sound of her voice.

The commander runs to the lander to escape but the Necromancer hijacks it, flying it to the ark where she gains entry via virtual retinal display. In the ark, the maltreated she-bot screams everyone to bloody bits on the way to the bridge where she makes a brute force entry by freezing a spot on the door with her icy breath and punching through. She commandeers the ark by killing most of the bridge crew and hurting a man badly for a retinal scan, and sets a collision course with the planet. She seems to come clean then, as the bloodbath of the immediate past is whitewashed by interesting light and she pleasantly visits the serene playschool to pleasantly select a few hostages not to kill in the immediate future.

As Campion sets about burying the mutilated bodies of the first humans Mother savaged (in his lifetime), the elegant and insubstantial-seeming ship drifts down serenely overhead; loaded with men and women and children and animals condemned to an infernal death in a terrorist massacre. There's an interesting light show as it crashes distantly in a nearby valley, and Mother pleasantly arrives in a lander with fresh playmates for her precious, precious Campion.

Not to be patronising but it's quite extraordinary to see a legendary filmmaker as old as Ridley Scott (at the age of 83) - who is further in to his career than most other colleagues could ever aspire to last (testament to his adaptability, stamina & resilience) - still flourishing at the helm of exciting projects, finding new, innovative ways of surprising expectant audiences - & with his latest outing "Raised By Wolves", it's clear he intends to remind any doubtful viewers just why he earned the title of a creative visionary, remaining beseated upon the throne he rightfully earned for himself as the master of modern science fiction - producing content that is consistently of the same high calibre; the reason for him being the goliath household name he understandably is today.

From this very first launch episode, the inventiveness & the originality that we've grown to associate with his filmography is still as apparent as ever, never failing to astound; despite having worked in the industry for longer than many have lived, his uniqueness & appeal hasn't faded or diminished & so as a young fan of his, it's incredible to be able to witness the finished products he's lovingly & meticulously created - which showcase him doing what he's always done best; pure, unadulterated sci-fi; contemplative, ponderous, brutal, philosophical spectacles that shock & awe in equal measure. From first impressions, this is no exception. It's a worthy addition to his résumé & I'm delighted to see the fruitfulness of the show - which seems to encapsulate the best of what he's able to do when he's truly in his element.

Stunning and beautiful set pieces.

Interesting concept. Two androids try to raise children and restart humanity. With some mystery concept of humans extinction from an all out war. Beautiful direction and set pieces. Visual effects. Interesting cast. The script does well in developing the story. There are some weird and cheesy moments. The climax does get a bit of a blood bath.

Not a bad start. You can definitely see the Alien influence in this, and I'm a big fan of Alien so that's a plus. It wasn't an amazing pilot. I do feel like the pacing and flow just felt off; things moved a bit too quickly for my liking. I know how hard it is to make exposition seem natural and this episode did a fairly good job of it but not the best. Either way, it's set up the conflicts and themes of the series. I'm sure the Mithraics will be on their way when they learn that one of their arks just blew up. Mother is a very cold character and I'm looking forward to seeing more of her. The sequence where she became hovering metal was very cool. There's definitely a lot of potential here

The idea was alright.. but by the time the female beat the father dude and then went all overpower and berserk obvisouly against all those men.. ever notice that when it is a male character that is going to be portrayed as overpowered he does not kill and butcher women? Just wondering lol

after almost 1 hour I did not understand what the purpose of the show was... and even less why the female bot become suddenly a super sayan 4... god super mega ultra blaster

anyway, let us watch the next episode.

Hey controlers of what i am typing 😋 I have watched the 1st episode, very cool...i am a sucker lulz for this kind of show...gonna watch the 2nd episode later today....to be real, it was a cool introdution to the serie...might give another shout out when i finish season 1.

Seriously? Sci-fi gore for morons

No idea what these other reviewers were watching, but this show, at least the first episode is a pile of pap, while there's is plenty in the way of special effects & visuals, the story/plot is pure dross, this should have been titled "pilgrims in space". The acting is wooden & the dialogue is atrocious, not seen sci-fi this bad since Dune. A lot seems to be borrowed or copied from the "Alien" series of films including Prometheus & Covenant except Guzikowski goes a little further with his portrayal of androids by giving them "magical super powers", presumably so he can ramp up the violent horror & gore. I can remember reading comics & novels in the 60s & 70s covering stories like this, clergy & faith in space set in the future, it was boring garbage then, recycling it for today's entertainment doesn't make it any different. Don't mistake this for thought provoking, intelligent or imaginative storytelling through the use of science fiction, this is nothing more than a horror gore show with flashy lights. Whatever conclusion or point this show is heading for is probably going to take a lot longer than most can stomach.
