As Courtney recruits two new members to the Justice Society, we get a good luck into Rick Tyler's life and how he lost his mother and father, Rex Tyler or Hourman.
Summary: Rick was left in the hands of his uncle, a sleezy drunk who believes Rick ruined his life and his chances at fame and fortune and takes his aggression out on him. Courtney is searching for more people she can bring in to the Justice Society with Yolanda. As of last episode, Beth knows that Courtney and Yolanda are superheroes and is eavesdropping on them to figure out what's going on. She manages to get to Courtney's house and find Dr. Midnite's goggles, and learns more about the Justice Society. While this is going on, Pat and Courtney run into Rick who helps with Car trouble, as this is going on Courtney discovers that Rick has some sort of connection to the Hour Glass. This leads her to find him once she finds out from Beth that he is the son of Hourman. They find him a party as they go inside to try and find him. As this goes on, we see that Henry Jr. is having increased headaches and leaves and can now read minds, maybe this is going to lead to him taking up the mantle as Brainwave from his father in the near future. The gang finds Rex and confronts him about his father and his superhero past. They give him the hourglass and tell him that the hourglass gave his father an hour of super-strength. However he decides not to join them and keep the hourglass because it was his father's. He leaves and finds his drunken uncle harassing a waitress at a restaurant. He becomes enraged by this and decides to take out that anger on his truck, utterly wrecking it. Courtney and Yolanda decide to go try and reason with Rick to try and get him to join their cause. However they leave Beth behind to her devices. She learns from the goggles that Rick's parents didn't die in an accident but were murdered by Solomon Grundy. Courtney and Yolanda find Rick at the tree where his parents died and try to reach out to him. He is however not interested in the JSA or giving them the hourglass back. They nearly end up fighting but Beth arrives to show them her discovery. After seeing the death of his parents, he decides to join them to get revenge against the people who killed his parents. In the end scene, we see Pat discover the stolen hero's items in Courtney's room after seeing a green glow emanate from within. Also during this episode we see the Gambler learn about an important device entering Blue Valley soon and the ensuing plot to capture the device for their devious plans as well as the Fiddler demonstrating her powers.
Overall, this is a great episode that shows Rick's past and anger from being abandoned by his parents and left to a terrible guardian. It was also great seeing Beth discover the goggles and her interactions with the AI. I am also glad we saw the Injustice Society in action and can't wait to see what their next plans are for Blue Valley and whatever Project New America is... definitely a 9/10 from me!
