This is how award-winning shows are made
Deemarx2 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
What may have seemed at first a slow beginning turned out to be ominous to the climactic ending. The uncanny warm goodbye of Serena to her Martha, Serena's suggestion to go without a driver, her farewell look at the past road and the hopeful smile at the future road ahead, the final intimacy act, the guilty and worried look on Serena's face when Tuello asked them to follow him; all indications that Serena anticipated - and probably planned - the fate of her husband. The cinematography was amazing and also served the purpose of foreshadowing the eventful ending. The crossed bridge raised a red flag for me with its clinched fists or teeth-like structure foretelling the Waterfords' faith. Certainly there is that welcome satisfaction with the retribution of Commander Winslow and the shocking cold - efficent handling by the housekeepers on the sounds of Kate Bush's masterpiece, but that has been addressed in other reviews. In short, this was the perfect episode in all regards. Best direction, cinematography, acting, plot and soundtrack.

I screamed YES twice. Very impactful episode that will definitely make the story come forward. Good dialogues especially the one between Serena and Fred.

"You get all of the art, Billy. All of it."
aslisonceley2 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Remarkable episode where art plays a big role underneath it all.

First, the relationship that Serena has with her writing marks a clear turning point in her decision making process.

Then, June negotiates her deal, pitching art "all of it" to the bartender.

In the fateful self-defense scene, June uses a pen, quick quick quick stabs into the Commander's heart, quick quick quick surprisingly insistent stabs that pull the breath out him.

The statue, becomes the weapon that delivers the final blow.

Deniz Gamze Erguven has a special touch when it comes to the topic of art, which she also masterfully handled in the episodes she directed for "The First." She's becoming a remarkable director for truly challenging, complex dynamics.

I'm speechless
seanbirm1 August 2019
This show has taken us all on such an emotional and mental journey and this episode is the culmination of that journey. Best episode of the series in my opinion. It also proves that patience pays off with shows that we are passionate for. You will not be disappointed.

Warning: Spoilers
Finally commander Waterford gets it and I think Serena set the whole situation up! Her "OH" when they were detained seemed more like a sigh of relief rather then a OH CRAP my poor husband. By far the best episode to date!!

The Show's Absolute Best Episode to Date!
RinoTheBouncer2 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is hands-down the best episode to date. Not only because I'm happy to see Fred arrested, but it's an episode where big things happened, there's June going places, old plotlines continuing like the five Marthas she rescued, killing Winslow, Fred and Serena talking about him being sterile, showing some form of affection towards one another and their complex relationships and how Fred took away what she loved most, being a writer.

We also got to see June work with an established resistance of Marthas, showing the complexity of Lawrence as a character and his struggle to choose between risking his wife's safety and keeping a promise. There were things going on, not just random flash backs that we can do without, not just internal monologues, not the same house or street and store for 45 mins, not the same hospital. That's what I love. I love the different scenery and the things that make me tense, not just torture and submission.

where are the Eyes?
pao-ulivi3 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, I get it: something finally happens (after 30 minutes of another boring episode) and everybody is rating this episode 10. But still: where are the Eyes? We were told in season 1 that there are spies everywhere, even in the house of a Commander, but the writers seem to have forgotten this. Just in this episode: Marthas have a big meeting, and no one is reporting anything. June is running the Lawrence household, but nothing is reported. Commander Lawrence disappears, and no one reports him. He takes June to Jezebel's and no one is reporting. The Waterfords take a trip suspiciously close to the Canadian border and still no one is reporting anything. Lazy writing if you ask me.

Phenomenal episode. Elegant, intense and just beautifully crafted. That final scene with the musical backdrop of Kate Bush' Cloudbusting. Just wow.

Is this the new standard for this show - just waiting for something to happen?
viggar891 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I get that many watchers are excited that finally something happened, but I really wish the writers would have though this episode out way more. Here's what I mean:

  • June just walks into Jezebel's like it's nothing - definitely not like it's the place where all the elite of the city are hanging out. There's no one at the door, she just walks in like it's no biggie at all. The otherwise (allegedly) omnipresent eyes and (definitely omnipresent) sentries are sleeping, guess

  • After June somehow fights off the commander, thereby killing him, she gets saved by a martha who June saved herself a couple of episodes earlier. That's basically a 5 in a million chance and just one (or meanwhile twenty) coincidences too much for my taste. One could also call it lazy writing

  • The Waterfords are doing a Hail Mary shot to get the kid back - I absolutely did not understand how this whole "plan" came to pass - but what bugged me the most was the ending to it - they follow this guy Serena met twice for apparently quite some distance, then they stop and - what a plot twist - they now are on Canadian soil so they get arrested. WTF?? I mean come on, do the writers really expect us to believe that Serena and Fred - one of the highest ranking officials in Gilled - are dumb enough to walk into such a simple trap? That surely would be the first thing to avoid when meeting with another nation and it's just such a lazy plot twist that it really made me angry.

I am now at a point where I think that, after finishing this season, I'll just forget about the show and try and keep the fond memories of season one and two.

There has been some serious filler this season...
jonnycof31 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
...But this episode was so amazing! Seriously enjoyed it. The Waterfords are finally getting theirs and it's going to drive the show to a super interesting place. Also, loving the dynamic between June and the Lawrences, and the Kate Bush ending was amazing, fit the whole sequence so well. Just such a cool episode!

One of the best episodes of television I've ever seen.
chrislefevre861 August 2019
Twist after turn, turn after twist. This show has always made for some outstanding television and has included, in my opinion, some of the best most boundary-pushing story lines in TV. This episode tops them all. This show has long since mastered its corkscrew edge-of-your-seat drama and brutality, but this episode takes it to another level. The writers have yet again found the perfect point in the story to inject a complete 180.

Finally Some Justice : Praise Be
iGlad1 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know which made me smile more Winslow's fate or Fred's both of whom are equally despicable slime ball rapists.

A very good episode but when Gilead falls I hope the leaders and their wives are all executed. However I'd leave them to the Martha's to do with as they wish.

I had not loved a TV show episode this much since the time when Cercei blew up the septuary during 6x10 of Game of Thrones. Both episodes gave me thrills from the beginning till the end.

Good but sloppy
samanzs21 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
10 minutes of good cinematography doesn't make up for another not great writing. June is literally the godfather, she does whatever she wants and has always a way out for some reason (this time a Martha save her because June saved her in Chicago, what a coincidence!). She should have been hanged on the wall at least 5 times in 3 season but apparently she has a special immunity. We see her killing Wislow, a sporty guy of mt1.90 full of muscle with a pen! And where are all the Eyes? Marthas, Lawrence family, June, Waterfords, everybody whatever they wants without a single Eye contesting. Personally the series died when June decided to not leave Gilead with her daughter. No, wasn't enough, she wants also the other daughter somehow. That's just sloppy.

Incredible! Best episode of the series!
lyntonm1 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's been feeling recently like this season had lost pace, though this episode makes up for it; and then some. The series is quite heavy generally, but in this episode, there is some payoff for the victims in the series. It sets the scene for the upcoming episodes to end out the season. If they are anything like this, it'll be incredible!

The direction, scenery, dialogue and screenplay in this episode alone is superb. It has it's horrifying moments like some other episodes, but you'll end up just wanting next week to get here quicker!
