Rick and Morty: Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion (2021)
New woke writers or what?
I stopped watching this season on this episode, though it seems the last few episodes may be better.
The first two episodes were good -- after that, either some writer converted to the new gnostic religion of wokeism, or they hired some writers that are cultists.
Terrace House: Opening New Doors (2017)
Better cast than previous two seasons on Netflix
At the very least, there *seemed* to be less people there just for exposure & more for the reasons that are actually given -- took me a while to get to this one after the disappointment that was the 'Aloha State' (season 2 on Netflix).
I haven't watched the most recent Terrace House, "Terrace House: Tokyo 2019-2020", but out of the three available on Netflix, this one is by far the best. I'd give it a 7.5 if I could.
If someone is considering watching this for the first time, should just go ahead and begin with this. If you like it, watch the original Netflix "Terrace House" (2015) before trying Aloha State.
Also should note that on relative niche shows like this, there tend to be a lot of positive reviews that are 'helpful' and anything that is even slightly critical gets a 'non-helpful' rating -- can observe some similar effect on, say, anime shows on Amazon, where even the worst is 4 stars.
Terrace House: Aloha State (2016)
Uninteresting cast for the most part
I wasn't too happy with the cast of the 2015 Terrace House (too many people just trying to further careers in entertainment), but compared to this 2016 version, well, it was downright amazing.
Most of the male house guests were passably entertaining (including one surprise at the very start, which didn't fit the typical mold), but can't say the same for the female guests.
I'd love to see more people actually interested in this 'relationship' aspect, vs. playing to camera for modeling, actor, etc., careers.
I can't help but think an age range of 21-34 would be infinitely more interesting than the 18-29 that has been shown the last two seasons.
The Spy Who Fell to Earth (2019)
Entertaining, engrossing story -- does a solid job of remaining impartial
Tells the story of Ashraf Marwan, a spy "unmasked" by British historian Ahron Bregman (or, perhaps, someone that Ahron Bregman feels he has unmasked -- with some help from Eli Zeira, the director of Israeli military intelligence during the Yom Kippur War).
The director, Tom Meadmore, makes a solid effort to tell both sides of the story and remain impartial -- leaving the 'double-agent' vs 'not double-agent' up to the viewer and should be commended for such, given the details of this particular case.
One could potentially argue that there could be some sort of reverse-bias in play, in that one tries to be so impartial that glaring inconsistencies or absurdities are downplayed in order to play up the 'mystery'.
The one "slip" (if you could call it that) would be the rather telling question that Tom Meadmore asks Mr. Bregman toward the very end of the documentary -- but it was something on my mind & probably for many other viewers by that point. I think it needed to be said.
Recommended, enjoyed it throughout.
Terrace House: Boys & Girls in the City (2015)
It's OK, casting isn't the best
Some other reviews seem a bit bizarre, e.g. '... most interesting is the fact that most enter the home with a certain objective in bettering themselves in one way or another'.
It's not so interesting when you realize that many of these people that are cast for Terrace House enter the house have with the simple objective of furthering (or starting) a modeling/entertainment career vs. this 'relationship' atmosphere that the series plays up & the commentators talk about.
I certainly wouldn't call this 'true reality'. That being said, yes, some things do happen, and, yes, some people are there for reasons other than fame. It's these people that are worth watching.
Into the Dark: Treehouse (2019)
Utter rubbish
Thumbing through the Hulu categories on Roku, this was at the top of one of the lists. Didn't realize this was part of a series (ala "Black Mirror").
Not sure if it's a fortune or unfortunate event that this was the first episode I watched.
It's absolute rubbish. I won't be watching any others.
Blindness (2008)
A brilliantly bad film
This is one of those rare movies that's so bad it's good. Best method of viewing would be to bring over some buddies that have never seen it & settle down with a few beers and enjoy (in that circumstance, I'd give this rare gem a rating of 8, possibly even 9). Just a few minutes in you are treated to your first example of the inane behavior evidenced in this movie when a motorist is struck blind while waiting at a stop light. Instead of asking for someone to call 911, an ambulance, or a relative or friend to take him to the hospital, he gets a complete stranger to drive him home. But even this doesn't even *begin* to approach the "brilliance" displayed as the movie progresses.
Seriously, do not read any more reviews or write-ups about this movie. It's best to go in with as little information as possible. Hilarity will ensue!
