Charmed (1998)
'new and improved'??
Well, I have been a (albeit minor) fan of Charmed, I have seen all the episodes and they were always nice, nothing big, good entertainment. But season 3 gives us something we have not seen before, darker episodes, a 'big' enemy, (plot)twists and turns. It is almost like Charmed is pulling a 'Buffy/Joss Whedon' on us and that is good!
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
Coen Brothers do it again
What a movie, I saw it at the Film By The Sea festival and fell in love with it. It starts with a black screen while hearing a song (one might instantly recognise a chaingang song) and is we get a picture it is a chaingang, singing and hitting rocks. The picture looks authentic, a bit vague, the mood is set. And that is what this movie was to me, a good mood. I LOVED the soundtrack and I wish and I hope that it will be available. I ( as America in the movie) was crazy about the song of The Soggy Bottom Boys, if anyone knows where I can find it and if there was an original by whom it was, drop me a line.
Suzy Q (1999)
is it 'normal'
I saw this movie at a friend's house. She taped it and popped it in and poured coffee. First shot we see Suzy skipping home from school, she comes home to a (seemingly) normal family. We soon learn that her father has just lost his job thus losing his manhood (?), his mother is a little weird (Indian books, she seems to be a model), her brother is in love with a girl, but she is a rocker and he is a mud, that doesn't mix with the girl's (ex?) boyfriend and her other brother is lost in Jimi Hendrix' music and ways (read: smoking the funny stuff)
The movie evolves into a portrait of a 'typical' family with its typical problems: The father abuses Suzy, she gets coldshouldered by her brothers, her mother just 'wants to have a good time'...
One day she schemes herself into the room of Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull, pretending to be a friend of Marianne's, she gets kissed by Mick and, well, this is a dream come true for her, but the people around her don't believe her or dón't care...
The end of the movie is, well, a little disturbing, the big brother's rat gets killed, as an act of vengeance he makes soup of the his mother's turtle and serves this, and as they are eating tells them what it is, his mother is obviously disgusted as is Suzy, his bro thinks it tastes good as does his father, but he does punish him, after that mother and father take a stroll through the park like nothing happened. Suzy wants to escape the situation and we see her sharing a doobie with her brother.
a sober movie set in the early sixties, sober is the way to describe this movie, sober and good...
The Cream Will Rise (1998)
expect everything
I saw this at a festival in Amsterdam, a documentary festival. It starts as a 'normal' rockumentary, a tour diary, jamsessions, studio work, talks with friends. Everything changes when we (the audience) get to see Sophie's family. There are quiet a few skeletons in the Hawkins' closet. Sophie hears more from her mom then she knows about her own childlife, things she blocked and when she (re)discovers them, she has to cope with them. very honestly the movie continues, showing Sophie from her bravest side, and she is up there with the bravest!!!!!
Felicity (1998)
THE MUSIC
Following other series (Dawson Creek, Party Of Five) this show has one terrific soundtrack, up to date and well scored. I got hooked to this series when I heard the first tunes of a Heather Nova song in one of the fist episodes. The drama is good, American and also up to date. This is a(nother) show about life one minor flaw might be that this series (too) is reigned by beautiful people...
Zusje (1995)
Thank God this movie is out on rental!!!
My own little sister asked me to tape this while she was on holliday (how ironic) last night I was browsing through my tapes and I caught the end of Zusje, I was in love with it. So complex, so sensitive and extremely close to reality. What a great therapy movie, though the viewer does not know what for. At the end as the movie (seems to) unravel(s) we (think we) see what happens, it is powerful!! I wish the movie had more international (ie American) recognition...
Sex and the City (1998)
WOW
Here in the Netherlands we just got Fox over here and I watched Sex and the City and I LOVED it. What an 'un-American' series, they smoke, they use 'bad' words it shows T&A and it shows here at 8pm. If you like honest laughs, watch this!!!
