Mr. Saturday Night (1992)
Still One Of My All-Time Favorites!
"DON'T GET ME STARTED!" I saw this film in the theater and I had to buy the DVD because I missed a lot of lines 'cause I was laughing so hard!! I admit that I've been a Billy Crystal fan since "Soap". But, as the movie follows the career of his Saturday Night Live character, Buddy Young, Jr., the dialog between him and Oscar-nominated David Paymer is priceless, whether they're being serious siblings past their prime or as agent and client during the Golden Age Of Television. With an excellent supporting cast which includes Helen Hunt, Julie Warner and Ron Silver (with cameos by Jerry Lewis and Jerry Orbach), I found this movie funny, heart-warming and poignant, too! It's been 25 years and I still quote lines from it during random conversations unbeknownst to those who haven't seen it! I hope you're not one of them.
Letters to Laugh-In (1969)
I Used To Watch This!
In the network's attempt to entice viewer participation from the tremendously popular Rowan And Martin's Laugh-In, this short-lived game show's concept was to have celebrities read jokes from viewers and have the audience rate the joke from +100 to -100. At the end of the show, the sender of the highest (best) and lowest (worst) joke would win a prize. Being that I was twelve years old at the time, I mailed in a handful of jokes on post cards (remember those?). Two of which were read - even though they were duplicates from other viewers - one receiving a +12 and the other a +20. No prize for me. But, lots of fun watching.
Hustle (2004)
Sad, But True CONTAINS SPOILERS
As a fan with an intense passion for the game of baseball, I can honestly say that nothing good comes from Tom Sizemore's slick portrayal of a beleaguered Pete Rose...a real scumbag. After watching this, it's easy to forget Rose's Hall-Of-Fame-like accomplishments on the field - captured by a handful of real-life clips at the top of the film. His slow decent into the world of degenerate gambling literally cost him - and almost everyone who he allowed get close to him - everything!! I almost felt sorry for Paul Janszen's character - smartly played by Dash Mihok (The Day After Tomorrow) - for his being so naive to the point where he just didn't see it coming. The bottom line being that, maybe other people do it, too, but Pete Rose got caught.
Eating Raoul (1982)
I Guess I Was Just In The Mood!!
BEWARE! SPOILERS AHEAD! Eating Raoul perfectly satirized an "ordinary, run-of-the-mill" couple who tried to reach their dream while they coped with the swingers' way of life in 80s Hollywood. As Raoul, a professional criminal posing as a locksmith (excellently portrayed by Robert Beltran), "worms" his way into Paul and Mary's life (and Paul's wife!), he takes full advantage of their naiveté. But, Raoul gets his in the end!! In this writer's opinion, there was something eerily amusing about Raoul missing from the final "dinner" scene...in the normal physical sense, of course! Cheers to Paul and Mary Bland and their achievement of the "great American scheme dream"!!
Monday Night Mayhem (2002)
Poorly Acted; But, It Got It's Point Across
A candid behind-the-scenes look at Monday Night Football from its infancy, "Mayhem" exploits the trials and tribulations of what has become an institution for NFL fans the world over. Being a football fan, if you take this movie at face value like I did, you can appreciate what the viewer doesn't see. This movie delves into the conflicts between on-air and off-air personalities well beyond what you may have read in the newspapers. However, as a movie fan, I was disappointed at the overall acting. Although a finely written script, I had to do my best to drown out John Turturro's poor imitation of Howard Cosell, to appreciate the unparalleled verbiage that only Cosell could provide. Same is true for those imitating Frank Gifford, Keith Jackson and "Dandy" Don Meredith. All in all, I gave this movie 7 stars.
Inspector Gadget (1999)
Broderick & Special Effects Steal The Show!!
I took my five-year-old son to see this movie and he had trouble staying in his seat!! With lots of action and special effects to keep the show moving, Matthew Broderick plays the perfect (but bumbling) Inspector Gadget. I enjoyed it, too, (I'm 42, but still a kid-at-heart) because there were some subtle insertions of mild "adult-oriented" humor along with some good one-liners and dialog by Broderick and D.L. Hughley (the voice of Gadgetmobile).
