Signs (2002)
thought provoking
I saw this movie a couple of days ago and I'm still mulling it over in my head. It was truly an awesome experience. Although the backdrop was eerie and suspenseful, I found Signs to be very sweet. I know some viewers didn't like the religious undertones, however, must I remind you that this is about a minister's family. Now, I'm not all that religious myself, but I still enjoyed the film. I like the way the director intricately tied everything together.
I do have to commend this cast and crew for going through with this film after what happened to our nation (filming was to begin Sept. 12). I'm glad they did not stop production like they were going to do because the message of the film gives hope, and we should have that whenever we can.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Excellent cultural eye opener!
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is an excellent film.
What frustrates me is the close minded comments I'm reading from other users. You cannot walk into a Chinese movie and expect to see Western values. Chinese believe in spiritual power, dignity and avenging those who wrong you. Unlike American movies, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is subtle in showing anything that may seem supernatural. Think of it as a Fantasy, or one big metaphor. Some users thought the flying sequence was silly---but really it emphasized the power and discipline of martial arts. Am I supposed to criticize Cinderella for having a fairy Godmother? Am I supposed to criticize Hercules for being half god when that is also unrealistic? Think about it.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon needs to be watched more than once in order to understand the depth of the movie. On the surface it seems to be about getting a sword back. However, it is more than that. It is about love that is suppressed because of tradition and the role you play in life. The women of this movie possess a refreshing inner strength. Not only do they kick butt, but they also stay strong when they are struggling with forbidden love.
This is an excellent movie. If you approach it with an open mind and heart, you will definitely appreciate its value. As you watch this movie, you may also learn a thing or two about the Chinese culture.
Screwed (2000)
WARNING WARNING WARNING If you see this movie you might be..
pleasantly surprised. Okay, it wasn't the greatest movie. In fact, it was a movie that I "settled on" (after I saw the line for Gladiator). I went in expecting the worst, but the more I expected to cringe, I couldn't help but to chuckle. The only scene I could really complain about was the kidnapping of the dog where it got painful. (That poor dog). You have to admit, it is fun seeing Norm weasel out of tough situations. Danny DeVito is excellent...the master genius of funny. Well, the type of humor might not be for everyone.
So, my suggestion is to wait for the video if you are not sure. But try to make it a point to see this movie...on some rainy day when you have nothing better to do.
The 10th Kingdom (2000)
Still dreaming about it.
Wow. Watching this epic has been a truly fantastic experience. I've always loved seeing what happens to "happily ever after" in fairy tales and I can say that I'm quite satisfied with what the "10th Kingdom" has done. I liked the way that the stories have been connected and that events happen for a reason.
The only (and I mean only) complaint I have is that there were previews during commercial breaks that would ruin the suspense of what would happen next. I didn't appreciate that.
Anyway. Yes, I am too waiting for the next sequel. I hope they make one.
Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style (1992)
cute, but so wrong
This movie was kinda sweet. I enjoyed this movie because I am a Saved by the Bell fan, but...I've never seen so many stereotypes of Hawaii in my life. Besides changing the geography of the island and making locals seem like dorks, there were hardly any locals in the movie. Majority of the cast were white and I did not see a hint of real Hawaiian culture. It was just cheesy.
Besides the cheese though, I did like the antics of the gang. Their adventures were quite entertaining. This is a good movie if you just want mindless fun and do not actually expect to see or learn anything about Hawaii.
