Sweet and Lowdown (1999)
Not worth the time to watch
This is the first Woody Allen film I've found not worth watching. I think Woody has tried many different genres to interest results but this movie just left me irritated and bored. The music is lovely but don't bother watching this hopeless mock-umentary.
In the Line of Fire (1993)
above average genre flick
This movie kept my interest but in the end there was no heart in it. Going through the motions. Immorality of trained government assassins versus morality of "just doing my job" to protect life. Impressively evil character.
Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
wretched experience, something to think about
No question this is a professionally created piece of art. All that is missing is vision. I found myself screaming to myself "Die and get this over with." A nihilist experience of death and love without meaning. I guess you can feel relief when you leave the film behind, if you can leave it behind.
Chacun cherche son chat (1996)
a lovely, light, pointless film
A few days in the life of a young woman framed by the search for her missing pet. I was charmed.
When We Were Kings (1996)
entertaining insights into history
This was great viewing. James Brown, B. B. King, and "The Greatest". Good music, good laughs. The fight itself is not a gruesome bloody affair. I believe George Plimpton tells a story of repression that involves the murder of 100 criminals that is a REALLY gruesome bloody affair. There's a slice of the Cosell-Ali magic, and Norman Mailer tells some very good stories. In the end I was left pondering about Ali and his ministry in the Nation of Islam and Ali's place in world cultural history.
