Due South (1994–1999)
As weird as "Northern Exposure", but with snappier outfits.
23 November 1998
I can't say enough about this show. Certain Canadian colleagues of mine recently tipped me off to this little gem, and now I can't get enough of it. If I wanted to take the easy way out, I'd use the words "quirky" "inventive" and "off-beat" -- and it's all of those things, to be sure. Throw in a good helping of Canadians making fun of Americans, and Americans making fun of Canadians (all in good sport, of course) and you're getting close. You really have to see it to believe it!

Constable Benton Fraser (as played by Paul Gross) is one of the funniest, most irresistible and distinctive characters I've ever seen. I would be remiss if I didn't add that the "yummy factor" is certainly part of his appeal, but it's his dedication, innocence, and kind heart that really carry the show.

Now playing in the USA at 4PM weekdays on TNT

T.N.T. (1997)
could'a been worse

Pretty bad, but almost worth the price of admission to see Oliver Gruner act playful and frisky. Also notable for casting Randy Travis as the sheriff of a small Colorado town -- Officer Barbrady wants his uniform back, Randy!

...and it's not that interesting.

Limp, mechanical, lifeless. Don't waste your time.

Soldier (I) (1998)

Surprise -- I liked it!

I went to this movie expecting to see a trainwreck. To my great surprise, I enjoyed it immensely. I can't see how people can think this is a cliche'd plot, unless they're just plain tired of science fiction movies. Which is fine, but don't spoil it for the rest of us.

Unfortunately, this movie has gotten such terrible reviews, I'm probably the only one who'll ever see it. I just want you all to remember: these are the people who told you to see "Titanic" and "The Horse Whisperer" -- they don't always know what you're going to like. See "Soldier" and decide for yourself, but please don't be afraid to give it a fair shot.
