Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Great Fun!!
Wow, Episode I is without a doubt the most entertaining movie I've seen in a long while. All I can suggest is not to get hung up by all of the negative reviews out there condemning it for its poor script, that Lucas has lost some of his "magical touch," etc. Go out to see it to have fun and I guarantee that you will not be disappointed. For extra enjoyment, dress up as the Star Wars character of your choice and act like an obsessive maniac at the theater, wielding your lightsaber like a certified Jedi knight. People may look at you funny, but you'll have a blast (I, of course, would never commit such an act, er...). Seriously, Star Wars has always been a great series, and I certainly feel that Lucas has successfully continued that trend through Episode I. Elitists out there will knock it for it's occasionally cheery atmosphere, and compare it unfavorably to the darker Empire Strikes Back. But you know what? I don't care. As long as each Episode continues in the same vein as its predecessors as fascinating, unbelievable tales, then I'll be happy -- which is why I'm so looking forward to Episodes II and III. Congrats to Mr. Lucas for coming up with another great film.
Entertaining Angels: The Dorothy Day Story (1996)
Moira Kelly Delivers Another Inspired Performance!!
Wow. Those of you who haven't had a chance to see Moira Kelly are really missing out on a truly great talent. Ever since I first saw her on The Cutting Edge, I've really looked up to her admirable character and her obvious acting talent. As Dorothy Day, she manages to take upon a tremendously difficult role and she succeeds beyond all expectations. The screenplay is well written, and while it does lead off the main drive of the story at times, Kelly is always there to provide a cohesive nature to to it which keeps the entire thing together. I really enjoyed this film -- I really didn't find the religious overtones to be a problem as a few of the reviews out there seemed to suggest. I hope you give it a try. You'll be glad you did. And, oh yeah... she's got a nice singing voice, too.
The Cutting Edge (1992)
Wow! Great movie!
I found The Cutting Edge to be an unexpected, pleasant surprise. Yes, it's another romance, but it's a romance done right with some comedy and some stunning scenes involving the skaters. Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney are great in their depictions of Kate and Doug -- I found them to be very believable, and it really is something to watch the two interact throughout the entire movie. The skating scenes were extremely well-done -- many times in the movie it seemed as if Kelly and Sweeney were actually performing the stunts, and doing a great job at it. Again, I really enjoyed The Cutting Edge (I got it on video as soon as I saw it for the first time on TV), and I'm almost certain most of you out there will find it as enjoyable as I did.
