Screwed (2000)
Why Norm, Why?
I swear I love Norm Macdonald I think he is a great comedic talent. Right up there with Denis Leary, but this movie (I will not call it a Film) was horrible. This was one of those movies like "Joe Dirt" where they had maybe one or two funny ideas and they built a whole movie around it. I really hope his next effort will be more thought out.
Pearl Harbor (2001)
Why the love story
Great special effects, mediocre story line. If it weren't for the love story it might even still have worked. But the love story opened up further speculation that those two pilots couldn't have done that much in the war effort. I learned it was true that no pilot did that much. But as Ben said all of these things were done. So, by the same line of thought I could make a movie where the main character won a super bowl, the World Series, the Nobel Peace Prize, the heavy weight boxing title, and a gold medal in Curling because all of those things were done. I love it
Jack Horkheimer: Star Hustler (1976)
And Keep Looking UP
This is the coolest end to your day. Jack flies around on a "star stream" of sorts. Just his excitement about astronomy makes it worthwhile to watch. He also provides very detailed information about the subject matter. I really think that he should be put in a movie or television show.
Highlander: Endgame (2000)
Why do they continue?
The original Highlander movie was excellent. One of my all time favorites. Everything after that has been nothing but crap. This of course being the culmination. The only good thing about this film is its cinematography. Some of the images and scene placement are very well done. Although I must wonder in every Highlander film a character swipes a blade across a railing or some other object. That always seems to cause sparks. I have never ever seen that happen in real life, and only in a few other movies. I just hope that this film means the end of the horrible spawn of a true masterpiece.
Strangeland (1998)
Social Commentary
I saw Strangeland as being a relatively complex social commentary. I would expect it to be lost on most people. I mean if you are able to ignore the bad acting you can see what drew Dee Snyder to this film. I think that it all really comes down to the Robert Englund / Dee Snyder thing. I mean both were sick. But one did what they did to enlighten (more or less) and one did it for their own sick pleasure. Also if you see the signs when the people are protesting one says "We're not going to take It" the title of one of Twisted Sisters greatest songs. Also incredible soundtrack for this album, it might beat out the Matrix.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
Almost exactly like the Book
Before I saw this film I read the book. This film contains everything the book does. Some of the scenes were switched around, but it's all there. I almost felt cheated because I spent the time and money to read the book. Hunter S. Thompson is a very talented writer though, and with the expert direction of Terry Gillium this film comes off very well. Unfortunately the book was, in my opinion, meant more to be a statement of the times than it was a story. Therefore while the film presents itself well as that, it does not include a classic Hollywood narrative. So I think many people will be disappointed. I also must point out that there are a number of great cameo appearances in this. Although it would have been great if Dennis Franz was at the convention.
Cannibal ferox (1981)
High School students must rent
I rented this in my Sophomore year of High School, and nothing in the American market has come close to comparing to it. Yeah, yeah it has animal sacrifices and a woman hung but by her chest, all of which are more than repelling, but it's the way it is presented which is in a very campy kind of way. If you are in high school and you rent this you can make your own MST 3000, the film is just that easy. I highly recommend it as a party sort of movie as long as most of the people at your party fall into the category of being a jaded "Gen X" type of person. Otherwise you may as well just leave it. But I think that just about every ones morbid curiosity will cause them to see it at least once.
Travolti da un insolito destino nell'azzurro mare d'agosto (1974)
A Real Experience
I watched this film in a Film History class. I was quite impressed at how Lina Wertmüller had shot this film. Although I think the story line is more important. I think that this film shows a raw look at a certain time period when men saw things a certain way. I think that Lina Wertmüller saw this as more of a satire than anything else. Showing that women need to be dominated and that men need to be more assertive. But I think that the meaning has been lost and that this film itself has fallen into the cracks of a "period piece". In which we assume that things were that way, and they may have been. But I see this film as a very important step in the right direction, meaning that this film has shown what a joke male superiority is and that things must change. Also i think on a certain level how primitive life works, how we can all be removed to our base essentials and how the rich, those that forget their deep "hunting and gathering" past will suffer. I think that this is more a stab at the rich in Italy at the time. In any case this movie is entertaining and when you leave it, you leave it thinking, so that is why I think it deserves to be seen by many people
The Mummy (1999)
If you can believe it, it's great
The Mummy was one of those movies that depends on an audience's ability to suspend their disbelief. I mean 2 years in an Egyptian Prison, and coming out with the most immaculate teeth I have ever seen. Also the movie picks and chooses what they want from Egyptian folklore and history.
Furthermore, I hear a lot of people say that this movie has incredible special effects and everyone is soooooo impressed. Well, guess what I am not impressed at all. I can tell where the special effects are, and I can tell you how they did that (Thank you very much Rowan University). The thing with special effects is that if you can tell that it's an effect, then it's not special enough.
But if you are able to suspend your disbelief and like comedy/action/horror/Brendon Fraser films then you will love this film. And would probably buy a ticket to see the sequal "The Mummy Vs. Encino Man".
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978)
A great movie....no wait, oh this one sucks
Well as a musical, I doubt that better music has been written except for maybe "Tommy". The problem is the people who are singing the music (with the exception of Aerosmith). The Bee Gees are by far not designed to play this kind of music. They can not and should not try to play the Beatles. And as time goes by this movie will slip further and further into that "joke" category, until someday it will just be another bit of useless trivia wasting away in a bargain bin or on the extreme late night on VH1
Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park (1978)
Great party movie
This movie sucks so bad it is great. With the added bonus that it is also almost a "Greatest Hits" collection. When you are throwing a party, just throw this in the VCR and if you can play it several times. People will love it for several reasons, mostly the music. But you can also make fun of the acting, the special effects, and the thing I love the most the back ground music. When the flying monkeys are going around the roller coaster, I could swear that in the back ground music is someone saying, "Walk a chicken". Anyway, I highly advise anyone to pick it up.
Night Patrol (1984)
Great if your 14
This movie is the king of bad taste. Furthermore it is probably the funniest movie that a 14 year old boy can see. But if you're older than 14 then you probably won't like it.
The Ref (1994)
Good but could've been better
This movie tried to be a showcase and to take advantage of Denis Learys' brilliant comedy routine. This was a great idea, and it turned out to be pretty good. But the story that went with it was trite at best. The story had been done before and done better. It was also inconsistent, and none of the characters had any depth. Again what made this movie watchable was Denis Leary simply being Denis Leary
