Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001)
An okay attempt
All this movie was trying to do was show off its CG. All those close up of faces are saying to us, "hey, look at the detail of the skin, eyes, etc., isn't it cool!?" Since all they focused on was the graphics, the plot, character development, and story was sub-par. The magic of most of the Final Fantasy games were about character development. This movie didn't really have them. The plot is unoriginal. The story is average. If you're a student of computer graphics, this might a good movie to watch just for the graphics. If you want a good story, look elsewhere. The best part of the movie was the Spiderman trailer before the movie.
The Matrix (1999)
Overrated Action Piece
The story was boring, even though the plot had a good premise. The action scenes are nothing to get excited about if you've been jaded by countless Hong Kong action movies. But it is still better than most Hollywood stuff. A lot of people seemed to have liked it in the theater according to their cheers and such. Go see it if you want, don't expect something incredibly mind blowing though.
Wong fei hung VI: Sai wik hung see (1997)
Not one of Jet Li's Best
Jet Li reprises the role that he was born to play as Wong Fei Hung. This time, Master Wong is in America to set up his clinic Po Chi Lam there. But things go wrong as he gets amnesia and lives with some Indian tribe.
The story was okay, but the rest of it wasn't. First of all, the fight scenes were poorly filmed. I couldn't tell what was going on since it was blurred and/or sped up. This is too bad since I wanted to see Jet Li's physical talents. Also, the sterotyping of the Indians were pretty bad too. The American actors' lines were horrible and cliched, and the American actors themselves were pretty bad (of course, they could have been bad because of the bad lines they got). There were some good scenes, but a couple of good scenes doesn't make a medicore movie any better. This movie is worth a rental if there is nothing else to rent.
Mo him wong (1996)
An okay Jet Li movie
Jet Li stars as the "King of Adventurers," a novelist who is having marital troubles and takes his feelings to his book that he is writing. The story was pretty interesting, but it was a bit slow paced for me. There were a few interesting fight scenes, especailly with the ninjas and the sumo wrestlers, but they weren't as good as Jet Li's other fights. It's a good rental movie.
