Shirts & Skins (2002)
Worth the watch.
I was lucky enough to catch this one morning on IFC, and I'd definitely have to recommend it. It opens the viewers eyes to the pain of being culturally different, ignorance, innocence, and stereotypes. Wonderfully written. Hopefully this movie stirs a little bit of thought about how we perceive and treat other human beings. We all feel the same....
Friday (2000)
What a rollercoaster of emotions ..
During the course of what I'd assume is around 20 hours (movie time), I saw a bleak yet wonderfully varied spectrum of human emotion, all surrounding one woman struggling in many ways with the handling of her ongoing struggle with cancer. Considering the film is only about 20 minutes long, this is an incredible feat. I'd definitely recommend catching this on IFC if you can. The last line is incredibly thought-provoking. Keep an eye out!
Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman (2000)
What a waste of low-quality film.
Oh goodness where to begin. First of all I don't think they should have made a sequel. Granted, Jack Frost (I) was pretty funny, a cheesy tacky tasteless holiday movie that everyone can make fun of. But the second .. come on. It was hard to sit through it was so bad. And I promise I've seen plenty of cheesy horror movies. The killer mutant snowman somehow makes his way in water form to a tropical island and spawn killing snowball babies that attack the cast of bad actors? Yeesh!
The plot - I've seen fewer holes in a block of swiss cheese. The cast - I'd be embarrassed to be in this. The editing - What editing? Good torture method? - Definitely.
I think if I see a Jack Frost 3 .. well, I know I won't bother to rent it. I've polluted my mind with enough of killer antifreeze-resistant snowmen! Save your money. If you want the cheese factor, stick with the original.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Real scare factor, without the Hollywood.
I was very privleged to see this movie in it's limited release. I wasn't quite sure what to expect since I hadn't heard much about it. This movie was awesome. It was so different from every other movie nowadays. Shot on a Super-8 camera, the picture is smaller and almost square. It also alternates between black and white and color. But anyway it appears to be very very real. Unfortunately for the filmmakers, the scariness increases.. up until the very end (which to be honest freaked me out totally). Overall this movie scares you .. but in a different way. It doesn't use the "Hollywood Cheese Factor" of constant blood and guts and special effects to do it. This time you're scared for real.
Meeting People Is Easy (1998)
Excellent documentary about some of the worlds most gifted musicians.
As a long time Radiohead fan, I was very very excited about the release of Grant Gee's documentary. Needless to say it lived up to all my expectations. It showed the band as people, not huge rock stars or snobs or whatever the public might take them for. It was the daily routine of photo shoots, interviews, and touring that helps us realize what hard work is needed to be a success. New song previews were a plus too. An excellent look at an excellent band.
Rear Window (1998)
An insult to Hitchcock.
This movie wasn't really bad... of course it wasn't really good either but Hitchcock remakes are always so bad, and can never equal his original work. This movie pretty much messed up the whole concept of the original "Rear Window", which was excellent.
Welcome Back, Kotter (1975)
Funny, entertaining show that will always be a classic.
I'm 17 years old now, and a few years ago when Nick-At-Nite did the revival, showing every episode of "Welcome Back, Kotter", I was immediately hooked! It was so funny, I tuned in every night they showed it. The characters are all so stupid, you grow to love them :o) Definitely a great show for all ages!
