The dialog makes this movie worth it
2 April 2004
OK...it's not rocket science. And it takes a far more comic direction than the other three films. But, in my humble opinion, it is the best of the four films because it made me laugh.

While short on plot and the action seeming a bit forced, the interaction between the characters makes this movie a lot of fun.

Examples:

1. The dialog between Chris Rock and Joe Pesci about cell phones.

2. Chris Rock's variation on reading a prisoner his rights.

3. The laughing gas scene in the dentist's office.

4. Uncle Benny correcting Riggs on how to say "Fried Rice."

These four and a few others make this DVD worth watching and maybe even owning. Set aside your reality acceptance level and just have fun.

Extremely Stupid
29 September 2003
This movie was just plain stupid! However, I must tell you that we turned it off after 20 minutes. Over the years we have learned that if a movie is terrible in the first 15-25 minutes, there is a 99% chance it will not improve. So, save some precious minutes of your life and do something more pleasurable.

A crashing bore
22 August 1999
Don't get me wrong. I am not a man who gets bored by love stories. Some of the best movies ever made were love stories. This wasn't one of them. In fact, this was one of the worst.

Why was I bored? Because I didn't care about the characters. The actors did a great job of acting, but the people they portrayed were not interesting. As I sat through this very long movie, I kept waiting for something to catch my interest. Nothing ever really did. I couldn't believe it was even nominated for any of the prestigious film awards.

It is interesting to read some of the other comments of viewers who see this film as one of the greats of all time and to see how many "10's" it garnered. I am glad they liked it so much. But there was little in their positive comments that I agreed with other than there was some wonderful cinematography and that the actors did a good job. I saw it through different eyes. I was just plain bored. Like Steve Martin in the movie "LA Story", I wanted to write on my window, "Bored Beyond Belief".

A good movie, if you have read the book
21 August 1999
This is a good movie, but only if you have read the book. Otherwise, it would appear to be muddled and difficult to follow. There were so many different resistance factions operating in Paris at the time of the liberation it is difficult to keep them straight. The movie doesn't help you in that regard. Reading the book gives you a much better perspective on the part each faction played in the liberation.

The little vignettes you see with characters appearing in the film for only a few minutes are all true. Unfortunately, they don't always make sense to an uninformed viewer and they give the viewer the sense of a badly edited film.

The true story of the last few days before the liberation is extremely remarkable. Hitler sent a hard core general he trusted to destroy Paris. It is incredible that he disobeyed orders and saved the city.

What I really loved about the movie was the city itself. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The film was shot mostly in the actual locations where the events portrayed took place. As a lover of history, I have been fortunate to have visited Paris more than once and walked these locations fully aware of what happened there. That makes this movie special for me. But, the film does have problems.

Besides being a bit disjointed, the French and German dialog were dubbed in English. It would have been better with subtitles, although many of the same actors did their own English dubbing. The film is in black and white, which doesn't bother me, but it might have been better in color. One of the main reasons for B&W was the Nazi flags. The French authorities refused to allow red and black Nazi flags to fly in Paris, even for a movie. They agreed only to have black and gray flags. But the black and white filming also allowed the blending of authentic war footage with the movie. Also remember that another similar film, The Longest Day, was shot a couple of years earlier in B&W.

The film is filled with a small army of great international actors. That was fun, although I didn't buy Kirk Douglas as General Patton. Gert Frobe (Goldfinger) was excellent as the German general in charge of Paris and Charles Boyer was also excellent in his small role. The music was composed by Maurice Jarre and is just wonderful. Whenever I am in Paris, the music continually runs through my head. As a side note, Jarre obviously borrowed much of this soundtrack for use in "Grand Prix".

In short, this is a historical movie rather than a great film. I recommend you read the book to get the full impact of the movie. But understand this remarkable story of the liberation is stranger than fiction, which makes it a good read. And, if you ever visit Paris the movie will take on a whole new perspective.

A great story made boring by bad directing.
18 June 1999
There are some great actors in this film, but the director has turned this great story into a crashing bore. The actors walk through their parts as if the director took the first take of every scene. He didn't make them act. In short, the director ruined the film.

Showtime did a short film about how the movie was made which was shown after the movie. George C Scott told how he complained that the director was not even on the set during filming (he was looking at a monitor from a control room). Scott had to ask him to come on the set and stand next to the camera. The director then commented how refreshing it was to be on the set during the filming. DUH!

Scott did a credible job as Matthew Harrison Brady, but I think he would have made a better Henry Drummond. Jack Lemmon was just not credible as the fiery Drummond. I think his normal soft approach is wrong for this part. Lemmon is far more fiery yelling at Walter Matthau in "The Odd Couple". Beau Bridges was just plain terrible, probably from lack of vision by the director.

I think if you watch this film, you should immediately go out and rent the 1960 version directed by Stanley Kramer to see how good this story really is and how a director can really make a film come alive.

If there is such a thing as a perfect movie, this is it.
18 June 1999
After recently watching each remake of this film, one can easily appreciate what an incredible film the 1960 version is. It is the perfectly made film and should be held up to all as the pinnacle of film making. It has the perfect director and the perfect actors. It probably has the best behind-the-scenes crew ever assembled including the perfect film editor. The choice of black and white is also perfect. This is one of those few gems where every element of film making came together to make the perfect movie.

The story is very thought provoking from both points of view, the evolutionist and the fundamental Christian. While I am not even close to being a Christian of any kind, I am haunted by the speech given by Matthew Harrison Brady that says how our children will turn into a godless mob with no direction without the teachings of the Bible (paraphrasing). But, isn't that what has happened some 80+ years after the story takes place? The actors effortlessly sell each character's point of view.

There is very little that can be said about Spencer Tracy, Frederick March and Gene Kelly that hasn't already been said. When you see the new version of this film, you can really understand why these actors are held in such high esteem. These guys are actors!

In short, this is one of the finest films ever made and should be seen by everyone.

A realistic look at the political consulting industry
26 May 1999
Having worked in the political consulting industry, I found this film very realistic and true to form, although no one I knew had a private jet and I never got to take showers with my personal assistant. But the strategies and tactics shown in the film are a very good example of how the industry works. I enjoy watching the film every so often to remind me how much I did enjoy the business and how happy I am that I am no longer in it. The one thing they forgot to show was how difficult it was to collect our fees after the elections were over.
