what a great movie this COULD have been
17 March 2000
if it weren't for the incredible talent that both MAGGIE SMITH and MICHAEL CAINE possess this movie would not be worth watching. seeing them both together is an ABSOLUTE TREAT. maggie smith is a genius, if she wants to make you laugh she makes you laugh, if she wants to make you think she makes you think and if she wants to make you sad she makes you sad - and often she can do this all in one scene. james spader doesn't seem to know what to do most of the time and that polly walker takes herself much too seriously... she looks good but come on - stop acting like you LOOK GOOD and start acting like a real person. the story itself seems to go in too many directions at once. there are so many elements you WISH were more developped and are not.

had this film been properly distributed MAGGIE SMITH would have SURELY WON another OSCAR (her 3rd) - I have to agree with other users on this one - this HAS to be one of the greatest performances by an actress in all of cinematic history - watch it if only for seeing MAGGIE SMITH prove to you that she is indeed one of the GREATEST actresses that has ever graced the silver screen

Superb, delightful, funny...

This film has to be one of my all-time favourites! I must have seen it at least 100 times and I always enjoy it as much every time. One of the greatest casts EVER, music is stunning (NINO ROTA) and the scenery is breathtaking. SEE IT. There haven't been many films like this and there certainly haven't been any to match it since when it comes to this particular genre. Surprised it hasn't been released on DVD yet.. oh well.

WONDERFUL FILM
2 September 1999
I just saw THE LAST SEPTEMBER at the Montreal International Film Fest. An incredible cast in an incredible film - what else can I say? MAGGIE SMITH is amazing (is she ever not? I DON'T THINK SO!) and the rest of the cast, Michael Gambon, Fiona Shaw and a whole bunch of other people are simply wonderful as well. Beautifully filmed, music was GREAT. I will definitely see this film again and again...

Great film with Maggie Smith turning in an amazing performance as always
28 August 1999
A great great film on many levels. As always, Maggie Smith turns in an amazing performance, as she has consistently done so throughout her career. Jane Birkin, Fiona Shaw and Michael Gambon also are wonderful to watch. The story itself is quite moving and engaging. Beautifully filmed and scored.

Great great film.
11 May 1999
I saw this film last night at a premiere presentation in Montreal and I have to say the audience loved it. As always, Maggie Smith totally steals the show. Her performance in this film is amazing. I hope people realize what great comedic genius this woman possesses and what a stunning actress she is. Judi Dench and Joan Plowright are also great in their roles, as are Cher and Lily Tomlin. The film was touching and extremely funny. I truly believe Maggie Smith deserves Golden Globe, Oscar and BAFTA nominations and wins for this film. If it hadn't been for her performance the film would have easily fallen flat.
