Blood Song (1982)
Venus if you will, please send a little girl for me to kill!
Honestly,I'm shocked no one has posted that headline yet,it's so obvious!I've seen this movie, and it's pretty bad!It should be noted that except for his occasional reunions with Annette, this is Avalon's ONLY acting performance since "Grease" Sad,when you consider he started his acting career with a few A pictures["The Alamo" & "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea"]and then degenerated into the AI Beach films! Not a defense of him or this film, just a witty comment!
Donnie Darko (2001)
It's not what you expected...or is it?
First of all, let's say what this film isn't.It's not as the box says,'in the tradition of Stir of Echoes or Final Destinaton',nor is it a 'Sixth Sense' knockoff[and BTW I knew THAT film's surprise ending 5 minutes in]!What it is actually is a story of how the 'moral majority' ended up corrupting the generation they thought they were saving! Why did the director set the film in 1988 instead of the present? My guess is that he heard the stories of the teens who were driven mad allegedly by heavy metal music and wanted to show the real causes of the insanity! It's no coincdence that all the so-called moralists are depicted as uptight extremists, dig deep and you'll see this is not a horror movie, but a political statement! The ending is sort of a Hollywood cop out,but the message is there if you look for it!
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Very good remake!
A lot of surprises in Tim Burton's version!Who would have expect an anti-gun message from Mr. NRA himself,or that Helena Bonham-Carter 2nd best performance[after 'Fight Club',of course]would come from her in a monkey suit?! A few words about the twists[Don't worry,I'm not going to reveal them, just provide knowing insight for those who saw them]!! The first one is obviously a tip to Rod Serling's original ending. The second one I think most people could guess from the opening scene, but it's a funny goof on 'Beneath the Planet...'!The final big twist may seem confusing, but I think Tim Burton wanted to set up a sequel based on 'Escape from the Planet...',and I think this may be one to watch for!
Scary Movie 2 (2001)
funny Film!
Saw it today,I laughed like crazy!Basically, this one skewers horror thrillers[I.E.'The Exorcist','The Haunting']the same way the first one went after slasher movies!Forget the fact that half the cast of this movie 'died' in the first and you'll have a good time!Howard Stern fans should keep an eye out for Beetlejuice, the jolly black dwarf!
Election (1999)
GREAT MOVIE THAT MAKES YOU THINK!!
This movie was a surprizingly good look at politics. While on the surface it may seem to be a high-school comedy,it's a wicked parable of '90's morality. The parallels of Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill and Clinton/Lewinsky are dead on,and the ironies of the plot twists make you think.3 that stand out for me:[1] Paul could have forced a tie if he wasn't so stupid and voted for himself instead of Tracy.[2]Tammy actually got more votes than Tracy and Paul, but was disqualified by confessing to destroying Paul's posters. [3]Both Jim and Tracy had the means to destroy each other before the election, but chose not to.Ultimately, the movie forces you to chose:Jim or Tracy-who's the villain and who's the victim? Most of you seem to root for Tracy, but I think Jim's the real hero, even though he is defeated.Great performances all around, especially from Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon, both of whom usually play nice people. One final word to those of you who complain the movie is too dirty:It's a R-rated movie, none of its scenes are gratuitous, and it's actually more sedate than "South Park" or "American Pie".
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Not bad at all
Julia Styles gives a great performance and the outtakes at the end are funny. And for the record, there is a list of 10 things, despite what the aussie guy said. It's contained in Kat's sonnet at the end of the film.
