Otkradnati ochi (2005)
First Bulgarian film to deal with ethnic cleansing on the Turkish minority
At the Beginning of 1980 the Bulgarian Communist Party begins to rigorously pursue a policy of ethnic cleansing on the Turkish minority. It is the first Bulgarian feature film to deal with this dark chapter in the country's history. The mass expulsion of a minority which took place in a European country in 1989 remains largely unknown up until today. To ensure that this no longer remains the case and that now audiences can look upon history in the face is the merit of Radoslav Spassov, who both convinced and deeply moved me with his this film. Two outstanding lead actors contribute to the success of the film. It received a Special mention from the IFFS (International Federation of Film Societies) jury on the 15th FilmFestival in Cottbus/ Germany Festival of East European Cinema in November 2005.
Outras Frases (2003)
A dance documentary
This documentary won the price "best documentary" in Portugal at the 11th film festival Caminhos Do Cinema Portugues in 2004. The film by Jorge Antonio tells the story about contemporary dance in Angola. The dance choreographer and ballerina Ana Clara Guerra Marques is the central figure and her work with and passion for contemporary dance is the main topic. The documentary takes the viewers on a historical and political journey that shows them how the contemporary dancing came to be. The dancing is great and we come close to the people behind it. I liked it for it's honesty when showing this. The use and combination of archive footage is also impressing. I think this film and Jorge Antonios work itself contribute to a greater and wider knowledge, not only about contemporary dancing in Angola, but also the culture in Angola. In this way it is a important documentary as well.
Den hemmelighetsfulle leiligheten (1948)
Norways first film modernism?
This movie is about a town manager (Ola Isene) who moves into a dead writers apartment. Here the story unfolds an the main issue of the story is the town managers "new life" in that apartment. He finds some hidden love letters that belonged to the dead writer, and the love letters are written by his maid Dora (Sonja Wigert). One day, the maid are coming back to get them and the town manager falls in love with her. He uses the letters to get close to her and step by step he is overtaking the dead mans persona to become the man that stole the maids heart. In the end he is a completely different man. He's got the identity of a dead writer.
The movie is in a subjective setting with voice over, dramatic camera angels and some of the mise en scène contains Norwegian Kai Fjell's modernism art paintings. This early gem of the Norwegian modernism film history is a enjoyable feature to watch.
Storfolk og småfolk (1951)
Tancred Ibsens twentieth movie
This is Tancred Ibsens (Fant) twentieth movie and contains one of the funniest opening sequence in his career. Long time Norwegian actor Harald Heide-Steen Jr.(Olsenbanden & Dynamitt-Harry) plays Ola, the angry little boy, in the first story of this five episodes movie. The five episodes spins around the farm Smehaugen where people sit around a coffee table and tells stories to each other. The episodes are about people connected to the farm in one or another way. With is't hilarious dialog and the warm stories from the countryside makes this picture a enjoyable Norwegian film to watch. The movie is based on Hans Aanrud novel "Stories" (1891).
