The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie (2005)
Get over it
The people who are dissing this movie saying it is disgusting or gross need to get over themselves. It is not meant to be a serious documentary. It's like a kid's version of Spinal Tap. I really do wonder if some of the people cutting down on it think that it was a real legitimate documentary.
Those people need to get a life.
I couldn't even count how many times I laughed during this movie, and I am far older than the target demographic. I thought it was funny.
Don't listen to everyone who is cutting down on this movie. Watch it yourself. I am glad I did.
Particles of Truth (2003)
Impressive Acting
I can't honestly say I was impressed with Gale Harold in "Queer as Folk". His acting there didn't really impress me. But he shines in this movie. He showed me what he is really capable of. As QAF finishes it's run and Gale starts working on new parts, I think a lot of people will be impressed.
The movie cuts back and forth a lot. Constantly is more like it. But after you get used to that, it's okay. It is definitely a movie you have to sit down and watch - no letting it play in the background while you do something else.
I rented this movie on a fluke. Now I'm glad I did. I strongly recommend it.
Deathwatch (2002)
What's all the fuss about?
I was reading several of the reviews on this site as I was watching the movie. I agree with some and disagree with some. There have been several comments regarding the relatively low budget. What's wrong with that? I, for one, appreciate seeing a movie that is nothing but real actors filling the screen, rather than special effects and computer-generated action. I think relatively low budget aspect of not having special effects made it more "real". The acting I thought was fine. The only person I recognize, being an American, was Jamie Bell. He did his usual very good job here. I have absolutely no idea who the rest of the cast is, so I was not constrained in believability as several reviewers were who mentioned that when they see one specific actor, for example, they keep thinking of his role on a television show. With Bell being the only guy I've seen before, all the actors were, to me, able to settle into their roles as WWI soldiers.
I agree with a couple reviewers who commented that it was good that it was an all-British cast. As an American, it annoys the hell out of me when Hollywood makes movies that involve characters from other nations, and could very easily fill those roles with actors from those nations, but instead use American actors with horrible imitation accents, or worse yet, not even using an accent. Regarding what the movie was "really" about, I like the fact that it was left a little up in the air. This is one of those movies that allows heated debated after viewing it. It is good to have a movie that lets you think for yourself regarding what you just watched, rather than having it force-fed to you. I think this was a very good movie, one in which a low budget, all British cast, and completely unknown (for an American) actors other than Bell, all combine to equal an enjoyable viewing experience.
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
I wasn't expecting to like it, but I did.
I was never expecting to like this movie. The only reason I rented it was to try and see more of the Oscar nominated films. I figured I'd have it on the TV in the background while I got some work done on the PC. No such luck. The very clever use of modern songs in the years-ago setting caught my attention, and the rest of the movie kept my attention. It truly deserves every one of the Oscar nominations.
Even Stevens (2000)
Funny -- watch a few episodes
Not only is this show about as funny as any other show on television, the actor playing Louis Stevens is about as funny as any other actor on television. One show may not hook you, but after you watch three or four straight shows, you'll get hooked. Shia, who plays Louis, would be really well-known if this show was on one of the big four networks. The interplay between him and his brother and sister is priceless. The guy's a star in the making.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Made me sick
No, I am not saying that there was anything disgusting that made me sick regarding the movie. If you have an inner-ear type problem, the skaky-camera style of filming that was used in this movie can make you nauseous. I myself know of several people who got sick at this movie because it made them dizzy. Watch out!
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
Get a life
Have you read about people cutting down on this movie for being juvenille and crude? Have you heard people say it is disgusting? It is all of the above, and more. And what do I think? I'll tell you what I don't think. I don't think I ever laughed this much in 1 1/2 hours. Ever. The movie was not made to be taken seriously. Those who don't like it -- get a life. The movie is just a fun attempt at making fun of a bunch of things. Enjoy it. Don't analyze it.
Cruel Intentions (1999)
Don't believe Entertainment Weekly
Entertainment Weekly once described this movie as "..everybody has sex with everybody." Okay, I'll be more honest that most people are. I'm a guy, and I went there to see everybody having sex with everybody. What did I see? I saw a movie that, as a subsequent review said, had less skin than a typical Lever 2000 soap commerical. I'm not blaming the movie, I'm blaming Entertainment Weekly for describing it so poorly the first time.
The movie was pretty good. The ending will probably surprise you. It did me. It is no wonder that Ryan and Reese ended up together in real life. There was definite chemistry onscreen. For you Ryan fans, the movie has his required butt shot. (I admit it, he has a far above-average butt, however I don't need to see it everytime I see him act.) For you Reese fans, she's as cute as ever in this movie. She doesn't take over the role as much as she did in Election, but she does a good job here.
I'll probably get this again on DVD, even though it doesn't actually show "everbody having sex with everybody." Oh well, I guess I can fall back on those Lever 2000 commercials.
