Murnau's first great movie
26 July 2007
The German unauthorized version of Dracula which we are lucky to still have today. All copies were ordered destroyed, but there were enough distributed that some remained around. It is a terrific film with a great performance by Max Schreck as Count Orlok. The part of this movie that stays in you brain are the visual images. Count Orlok coming out of the coffin in the ship, Ellen Hutter on the beach with the cemetery crosses behind her, and the precession of coffins of the street. This film has the best ending of any of the Dracula films. It is much more poetic than finding Dracula and driving a stake through his hart. This is my second favorite Murnau movie behind Faust. It is a must see film. The images are powerful and Schreck's performance is great.
