Original Sins (1995)
The most brazen, original horror film in recent memory.
Without question this stands as one of the most original, outrageously inventive horror films in recent memory. It is at once a comment on horror/sci fi, low budget films from the past twenty years and a hilarious send up of the genres tired ideas and brainless audience. Nothing is sacred to the makers of this film and they seem smart enough to carry that stance off beautifully. The best scene is definitely the animated sequence which is so surreal and glitteringly brilliant it beggars description. I would like to contact the makers of the film to see what is next. Will this be distributed?
Bye-Bye Babushka (1997)
The best documentary I have seen in ages. period.
What a film! Oh my god. Did anyone else see this on channel 13 when I did? A film which on the surface appears to be the simple chronicle of a group of aged Russian women. We follow them in their daily lives- some are farmers, some are activists, some are still staunch Leninists. By the end of the film one realizes that what you have been watching is the glorification of the human being- faulted, struggling and eventually glorious just because we survive. I can't say enough good things. I was so moved.
