Swordfish (2001)
Trash
The only things missing from this movie which used every gimmick in the book were Claude van Damme, Sylvester Stallone and Chuck Norris. I am really disappointed in Travolta and Jackman for stooping to agree to be in such a mindless 'hollywood' piece of junk and I can't believe the rating it's getting here. To be generous I give it a 1 out of 10.
Hannibal (2001)
Not So Great
I was disappointed in Hannibal. I actually thought it was kind of a sleeper. Perhaps it was spoiled for me because I'd just seen 'The Gift'. Good thrillers that keep me on the edge of my seat are few and far between. Hannibal was not one of them.
The Pledge (2001)
Two Thumbs and Two Toes Way Up
Thank you Mr. Penn for not altering an excellent novel to create a 'happily ever after' typical hollywood movie. Of course I wouldn't expect any less from Sean Penn. This is one of the first roles I've seen where I got so caught up in Jack Nicholson's character that I forgot it was Jack Nicholson. Jack does an exquisite job as does his supporting cast. An all 'round excellent film that kept me riveted to the screen and after the initial shock of the ending wore off, applauding it.
Sweet November (2001)
Ewwww!
Is it just me becoming a crotchety old realist or was Sweet November as bad as I thought it was? Not since 'Love Story' starring Ryan O'Neal and Ali McGraw have I seen such schlock. The story line was totally unbelievable and full of gaping holes. The acting was flat.
Man with a Plan (1996)
Riotously Funny
Don't miss this movie if you have to spend forever hunting down a copy. Fred Tuttle and the other characters are priceless. Fred, a 73 year old Vermont farmer, needs money to build a new barn and pay for his 94 year old father's hip replacement. (Insert light bulb here). He decided to run for office as the pay is $80,000. And so starts Fred's campaign.
Flawless (1999)
WOW!
Once again Robert DeNiro has a truly difficult role where his talents shine through. He is only outshone by the excellent acting ability of the great Phillip S. Hoffman. The supporting cast is terrific. Lots of very rich humorous lines in this movie. The story line may be a bit far fetched for some but the acting and writing is well worth viewing it.
