Spaceship (2002)
Well done, but too conceptual
First of all, congrats to the filmmakers for getting it on cable. Unfortunately the concept is excessively convoluted for it to seem like much more than a film school final project.
I had such great hope for this short after seeing the opening title and the first few shots, but then it broke down into unecessary abstraction. With a few tolerated sound sync problems, the production of this short is nearly flawless. The director knows what he's doing, that's obvious. Hopefully his next project won't be so "deep".
Reveille (2001)
Shorts don't always need to blow your mind
Nothing really exciting going on here, other than some quick glimpses of street occurences in NYC and some coffee shop goings on. The thing that caught my attention was the piano/violin music going on through most of the piece.
We don't get a great idea of who the main character is, other than "oh, that's Steve Buscemi's brother" and then quickly find out his 'secret'.
The rest of the movie is slightly funny and mostly odd.
If there was a definite point to this short, I missed it. Then again, shorts don't always need to blow your mind.
Keep an eye (or ear) open for it.
Monsters, Inc. (2001)
Technically better?
Is this film technically better than Toy Story 2? I couldn't tell that they had done anything ground breaking... not that Pixar has to constantly top themselves.
I was thoroughly impressed with the "door-mover" scene. My heart rate increased during that!
I just wish that character voices were better. I mean, Mike was a great character, but it kept slipping into just being Billy Crystal's voice.
Stay for the credits!
The Minus Man (1999)
..minus two hours..
Well, minus two hours from my life later, this movie wholly disappoints. I must say, the exquisite trailer for this movie was very entertaining, but the movie left me feeling empty. If this was the intention, they did a great job.
I kept myself entertained with studying the characters. Owen Wilson was great; not overly creepy as Vann, but he ads just the right amount at the right time. Janeane Garofalo was nice to see in a non-sarcastic role. She played it well..the girl who lives in a small town and finally has the opportunity to meet a new man. Her anxiety was a lot of fun. The married couple that Vann lives with is completely unconvincing. Their individual performances were good, but they seemed a little too distant to be an estranged couple (see the movie, you'll understand). Dwight Yoakam was surprisingly good. Sheryl Crow should stick to pouting in her videos.
Other than Mrs. Durwin's comment about the separate entrance to Vann's room, I have to say, the only thing I really was left wondering about with this movie is whether or not the book would be better.
The Million Dollar Hotel (2000)
..very good, but..
I really enjoyed this movie. It was very good, but one thing kinda ruined it for me. Tom Tom. He was just a little too "retarded" if you ask me. He was hopping around like a kangaroo for the entire film. I liked him better when he was being "romantic", but it was almost like a different character.
I found it very interesting that everyone had such distinct personalities. Also, I was amazed by Jimmy Smits in this! I don't know what Mel Gibson's problem with this film was. It showed an interesting side to his acting abilities.
From what I've seen of his recent films, Wim Wenders is starting to concentrate a little harder. Maybe his "End Of Violence" put me off a little. Regardless, this is a very fun movie, and won't alienate someone unfamiliar with his films.
