The Guys (2002)
excellent movie
With all due respect, I don't think Mr. Olsson watched the same movie I did. It would appear that Mr. Olsson's "review" is more than a bit colored by his apparent anti-American sentiments.
I just finished watching this movie on cable television and I didn't see anything jingoistic or any 'patriotic crap' in the movie. What I *did* see took me back to my own experiences - time spent in the aftermath of 9/11/01 at Church and Vesey and attending more funerals and memorial services than I can count at this point.
I applaud everyone who made this film happen for giving us perhaps the most human film to come out of the events of that day.
(Incidentally, I do happen to be American by birth and a firefighter/paramedic by calling)
Bringing Out the Dead (1999)
spot-on
I've worked as a paramedic off and on for over a decade. I felt the movie was a spot-on depiction of Connelly's writing. Some of the nuances didn't hit me until long after I'd seen the film. I highly recommend this film, but it's rather unpleasant to watch at times.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
Debatably the best of the Star Trek genre
Nicholas Meyer's interpretation of the vision of Gene Roddenberry is a more intense, more grown-up version of Star Trek than seen previously. Some viewers are put off by the more militaristic portrayal of Starfleet than previously later as per ST:TNG's 'kinder, gentler Trek', but if there's one movie of this genre to see, this is it.
