Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Begun this clone war has...
Whatever you thought about Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace, whatever you disliked about Jar Jar Binks or the little child Anakin had been in the first part of this spectacular space saga, forget you must about all your concerns! I had the possibility to watch Episode II this night at about 1:00 o'clock in the city of Munich/Germany at a charity preview screening! What I saw some 13 hours ago is the movie of the movies, the movie every true fan and every moviegoer has waited for! This time director George Lucas managed to deliver a fine performance in directing, storytelling and visualization of the great events that take place in this 2 hours 22 minutes thrill-ride I'd like to call the second best Star Wars movie of all time which means that this is the second best movie of all time (after the original Episode IV - but, hey, I've only seen it one time until now so things could hint at a No. 1 spot in my personal list!). The movie's atmosphere is far more darker than that of Episode I and I think that Episode II is even darker than Episode V. The galaxy's in a real turmoil, because of the separatists that want to leave the Republic. The story has a wonderful pace I'd like to compare with Episode IV. There's not a single second one feels bored or one feels strange about anything. All the different subplots are developed perfectly and find their climax in a gigantic battle in the end of the movie. The actors all deliver excellent performances. Especially Hayden Christensen's performance marks the perfect portrayal of the later Darth Vader. You can really feel his inner battle with the dark side. He is a good person with a good heart, but certain things make him turn. In Episode II, during one of the highlights of the movie, Anakin is confronted with his first dark actions. It will take your breath away, I promise you! Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor do a great job and keep up the fine pace of the movie. McGregor gets to do a lot this time and some of his quotations will be remembered! The hidden star of the movie, now one can deny that, is Yoda. Yes, you heard it right, Yoda. The Jedi-Master shows the audience why he is the greatest Jedi of all time and also proves that the advance of digital animation can't be stopped...... The Special Effects are totally exciting, excellent and brilliant, but they never stand above the story, no, they drive the story forward and underline all the aspects of the movie. The CG-characters in this movie look so realistic (especially Yoda) that you just won't believe it. Compared with Spider-Man (a very good movie, too!) where the animated Spider-Man can be recognized during a lot of scenes as an animation Episode II's CG-characters interact perfectly with the real actors. And talking about technical aspects...... I didn't see any hint that the pictures were entirely shot digitally! The picture looks brilliant, colourful and very rich! The sound effects are superb and John Williams' score perfectly underlines this motion picture experience! What else to say than well, I already have my tickets for the midnight premiere on Wednesday/Thursday and I'll again enjoy a hell of thrill-ride watching this movie that tells us a story of good versus evil from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... May the force be with you! Always!
That '80s Show (2002)
Haven't seen but I'm eagerly awaiting the show...
Hi there,
I just want to clearly state that I've not seen the show until now because here in Germany and the rest of Europe it takes some time until the US-shows get a release date! I just wanted to say that I don't agree with the review saying that the 80s are good to make fun of! The music wasn't bad, there are so many classics that the reviewer doesn't know, I guess! The 80s comeback can't be stopped, because there was more to the 80s (and of course the 70s, 60s and 50s) than the 90s and nowadays could ever give us! Music was better, movies were better (there good movies from the 90s and today too) and life was more colourful not that grey and cold than in today's world of people who don't know anything about the 80s at all, but believe when some papers post bad rumours about the 80s and how silly and corny everthing had been (at least that's what they believe)!
I'm awaiting this show and hope that it will give a funny, honest view of teenagers in the 80s! Realistic and serious and funny as nowadays Friends or Party of Five or That 70s show!
See you...
80s forever!
Yours, Tobi
Shrek (2001)
Spectacular, Funny and a real message...
Some few hours ago I had the pleasure to watch a preview of the Dreamworks super-blockbuster SHREK here in Germany! Well, what am I to say now? This movie rocks! It's one of the best movies I've seen until now this year. There's lot of fun, romance, action and comedy in it! The animation is almost photorealistic, but still preserves the animation style! A wonderful movie for all ages! What else to say than maybe: I've got a dragon here, and I'm not afraid to use it! I'll buy the DVD and I'm very sure about that! See you and... Get to know the people and don't judge 'em because of their outer appearance! Yours, Tobi
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
The perfect science fiction film...
... this is the best Star Trek movie next to First Contact! The acting is brilliant, the effects are perfect and the musical score was done by a James Horner when he still was a genius! And, of course, the pace of the action is amazing! I can't wait until the DVD release in Europe and I can't wait to watch the new Star Trek Series V - ENTERPRISE... Live Long And Prosper, you fans out there!
The Mummy Returns (2001)
The "Sequel-Problem"...
It's the typical sequel problem! In fact, it's more than that. The movie is a lousy attempt in redoing the first MUMMY-movie. O.k., the effects are - most of the time - excellent - except the badly animated Scorpion King during the show-down -, but what the movie really suffers from is the missing plot. You can guess almost any scene in the movie. The acting only helps the story to jump from one effect-scene to the next. Too many special effects destroy a movie and it seems like Hollywood doesn't understand this at all. The movie's an entertaining thrill-ride worth spending two hours in the cinema, but you'll forget about the movie the next day, because it's a heartless movie that totally lacks innovation and surprises. The pros of the film are: Patricia Velasquez, some very funny scenes. Finally, Spielberg should do another INDIANA JONES movie and show the money-hungry people at Universal what a real adventure should look like! See you and have a nice movie summer... still to come... maybe... Yours,Tobi
Wo hu cang long (2000)
10 Oscars... Go Ang Lee go...
I saw the movie yesterday! I had to drive 50 kilometres too watch it and every kilometre was worth it! Erin Brokovich and Gladiator are very good movies and I enjoyed them, but Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is the movie to receive the Oscars this time! The choreography of the fighting scenes, the romance, the cinematography, the music, the story, the acting... a masterpiece is born! Hollywood, give this movie a real chance! Go Ang Lee go...
See you...
Yours, Tobi
Drive Me Crazy (1999)
Reminds me a little bit of Can't buy me love, but...
Hi there,
Half an hour ago I finished watching this movie, Drive Me Crazy! Well, I thought I should write something about it. The movie reminds me a little bit of Can't buy me love from 1986 (feat. Patrick Dempsey, yeah that was his name), but it's more than that, it's a wonderful teenage movie with great actors, great music and a romantic love story! Don't miss Melissa Joan Hart's performance! Wow, what an actress, what a talent and wow, she's so cute! Go and see the movie no matter how old you are, it'll make you feel good and that reminds me of the 80s! Maybe somehow they're back!
See you...
Yours, Tobi
The Evil Dead (1981)
High expectations, but Evil Dead 2 & 3 are much better...
I most recently saw the first Evil Dead. I've seen part 2 and 3 before and I do think that parts 2 and 3 are much better than the original. The original is too fixed on bloody and gory effects! The beginning of the movie is very good and so are some scenes, especially when Bruce Campbell dominates the screen. But the rest is horror / slasher as usual! The only difference is that the movie is extremely gory and bloody!
See you...
Yours, Tobi
PS: Parts 2 and 3 are worth watching over and over again!
Masters of the Universe (1987)
What else to say... I have the power...
Masters of the universe, a forgotten movie??? A movie nobody really likes??? I say: the movie is a legend! Dolph Lundgren has one of his best performances, Courteney Cox started her career in cinema here and her movie's boyfriend is Voyager's Tom Paris! The effects are great (for that time) and feeling is brilliant. It's an 80s film, yes, but most 80s film do have a special feeling 90s movies or nowadays movies don't have very often! It's a pity that there's never been a second feature film... I'd like to see a special effects packed reunion featuring Dolph als He-Man again and Courteney Cox and all the others. This movie will rock you over and over again... It's magic, it's from the 80s, it's Masters Of The Universe!!! I have the power..........
Misfits of Science: Deep Freeze (Pilot) (1985)
The best TV-Series ever...
The best TV-Series ever... ... is without any doubt the "Misfits Of Science"! O.k., Star Trek, The X-Files and all the other cult series are great, but the "Misfits Of Science" tops them all!!! Why is there no DVD or a Video Collection of all episodes??? The plot is fantastic and extraordinary innovative, the soundtrack is brilliant, the actors are performing as if they were Johnny B. or Gloria themselves and the comedy elements are perfect!!! Remember the "Three Days of the blender"-episode! You'll be amused, amused and amused!!! Bring those Misfits back, back on TV, back on Video, back on DVD or even back on CINEMA! Hey, Hey, Hey, Misfits!!!!!!!!
