The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
Awesome comedy
When I first time saw the trailers of this movie, I thought it must be something rather unpleasant, but now after seen the actual movie, I must admit I was wrong. I've read the Jules Verne's books of Captain Nemo and his adventures. I've also read the novel about Dorian Grey and his extraordinary portrait. But this mixture of them added with some elements of Dracula, Jekyll&Hyde and Tom Sawyer is absolutely unique. Although its not rated as a comedy, in my opinion its the best comedy I've ever seen. One somewhat disturbing element was the main character Mr. Quatermine. I must admit that I could not link him to any story I've read or heard. But in the end that was only a minor inconvenience.
Le pacte des loups (2001)
Average story
The story was average or even better, but the tricks were awful. They have done better tricks back in 60's in Hollywood. Especially the moving of the "beast" was anything but credible. Too bad it spoiled the promising movie.
Spider-Man (2002)
Another so called Super Hero
I don't know if this movie should be compared to X-Men, but because they both are made by Marvel Comics I feel necessary to do the comparison. After X-men I expected a lot from this movie, but after seeing it I am quite disapointed. For my taste it was far too much ment for early teens. And the cast was not so impressive either. As a conclusion I'd say 6-0 for X-men.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Pretty story
Quite untypical martial arts movie, but still there were some elements which should have been reconsidered. First those flying scenes above the roofs were nothing but credible. Then those intimate scenes were quite compromised, which is never positive, between "PG" and "R" ratings. There were quite a lot violent martial art fighting so it would have been difficult to make it a "PG" so why not add some more intimacy and make it a "R" for good ? Anyway this surely is far better than any Jackie Chan's films.
The Man in the Iron Mask (1998)
Good but not really magnificent
The story is almost perfect, the actors fit quite well to their roles and all together the movie is quite beliveable. But one small thing somewhat spoiled the sentiment - it was too much an all family film. Those love scenes and fencing scenes could and should have been more undauted.
Romanovin kivet (1993)
An attempt to make an action film
One of the first attempts to do a completely finish action movie without a big budget and without any major star actors. When judging the film against that point of view, the result could have been much worse. But nevertheless, I've seen better movies...
Lost in Space (1998)
Space action for kids
Surely there is much better Science Fiction dramas than this, but still I'll take the liberty to say that in my opinion Lost is Space is better than average. The special effects are good and the roles are written to be somewhat funny but still credible. If you shut down your logical thinking and take it as a comedy, you'll might very well enjoy it.
54 (1998)
Baila baila...
A disco movie with lots of good actors (especially Salma Hayek and Neve Campbell) and a potential story, but still the it was rather boring. There should have been more sex and more famous hits from 80's. Or at least most of those hits were quite unfamiliar to me. With those actors and story one must have been able to build up a better movie.
Ice Station Zebra (1968)
Not the best of McLean filmations
Does not reach even near the level of "Where Eagles Dare" or "The Guns of Navarone", but not the worst of McLean's filmations either. Rock Hudson saves much while the rest of the crew is more or less unfamiliar faces. The age shows clearly in the sets.
