The Funkhousers (2002)
Hilarious and Original!
I have seen early material on this program, and all I can say is, it promises to be one of the most unique and funny programs to hit the airwaves in years. It's directed by Frank Oz and written by two guys from the Simpsons and is sort of a wacky cross between "The Addams Family" and "The Waltons." It's kind of like a live-action Simpsons in a way. It's about a weird family -- not monsters like the Addamses, but just plain weird. They're really close and live by old-fashioned family values but they don't take any crap from anybody. In the pilot, the whole family goes along to help the oldest son retrieve his stolen skateboard. It's loaded with physical comedy and sight gags and promises to be unlike any of the dry, boring shows currently clogging up the TV. I think it could easily become a phenomenon and people could be walking around with Funkhousers T-shirts and lunchboxes before you know it.
Mission Hill (1999)
Fantastic and Under-appreciated
->Mission Hill is a fantastic show and was radically under-appreciated by the WB network and many of the people who saw it. Extraordinarily well animated (it pushed the frontiers of prime-time animation) and equally well written, it went right over the heads of many viewers. A subtle satire of "life in the big city" (more in the vein of "King of the Hill" than "The Simpsons"), it seemed like an animated version of "Eightball" or "Hate" or a number of other alternative comics. Only two episodes have aired at present, but I hope more are on the way soon.
Mr. Show with Bob and David (1995)
All Time Most Hilarious
One of the most inventive and hilarious TV programs of all time. A great cast and really unique, excellent writing. A worthy successor to Monty Python; even better at times. Almost all the episodes (and I've seen every one) are fantastic. It's a pity more people didn't see it; it was on pay cable in the U.S.
Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)
A Noble Effort
Some great parts. Perhaps, overall, tries a bit too hard to be "artistic." A very memorable performance by "GTO." Much of the "meta" aspect was lost on me; perhaps it improves with multiple viewings. One of the shortcomings is that so much is supposed to be gleaned from the "silence"; but the two leads aren't quite good enough to make the "silence" meaningful.
