Private Benjamin (1980)
Under Rated Comedy
This must be the most under rated, under appreciated, overlooked comedy ever. It was never even released in Wide-screen on DVD. Goldie Hawn shines as the main Character Judy Benjamin as well as Eileen Brennen as the tough sergeant. Oh, and did I mention how funny it is.
It is the Story of Judy Benjamin, a newly married Jewish "Princess" with over protective Parents. To them, Judy is the typical "be pretty and stay quiet" kind of a girl. They marry her off to a doctor as every nice Jewish girl must do. This begins a journey of self discovery for Judy and we are taken along for the ride. As the title insinuates, she joins the Army and begins to develop into the woman that deep down she knew she could be.
I never understood why this movie has been cast aside. Maybe the audience does not want to see a mature, thoughtful Goldie Hawn. It's one of my favorites, and I hope one day it gets the treatment that it deserves on Blu-Ray.
To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995)
Bravo! to Snipes, Swayze and Leguizamo
The main reason I liked this movie is because of the trios' performance. I think they did an excellent job. How could a man that did "Roadhouse" be in this movie? That's what makes it so appealing. And not only be in it, but do an amazing job. Snipes made me laugh my heart out, and Leguizamo had a dark undertone to his performance that reflects the hopes and dreams of many Latinas living in poverty. I also admire the intentions of this movie. It wants to bring a message without offending or turn off the audience it intends to deliver it to. Not an easy task, but at least it's an admirable attempt. I think some of the reviewers on this site are a bit too harsh on this film. It is a fun bubble gum of a movie. Watch it and enjoy it, and in the process if you come away from it with a little more of an open mind, I think it has done its job.
Man's Favorite Sport? (1964)
Cute Comedy and very interesting dialogue
I ran into this movie by accident on AMC the other day. Somehow I always feel better after watching a comedy from that era. They seem so light hearted and cute without any of the cynicim we see today.
What's so interesting is listing to the dialogue. If you listen carefully, it's full of double meaning relating to Rock's private life. (living life as a phony, and the consequences of telling the world the truth).
Very much worth seeing.
Airport (1970)
F-U-N
I can describe this movie in one word, FUN.
A cast of stars, adventure, comedy, romance, controversy, drama. An all in one package. And all executed so very well. Helen Hays shines as the naughty older lady. Every expression and gesture from her are priceless. If you watch this movie on DVD, make sure you watch the widescreen version. The pan and scan version is horrible to say the least. It's the last of the true old Hollywood movie. Excellent entertainment.
Treasure Planet (2002)
I loved It!!!
I just watched Treasure Island, and I loved it!!!
I think it's a serious attempt on Disney's part to offer an animated feature that adults can apreciate.
The animation is spectacular, the action is great, but the reason I liked it so much is the relationship between Hawkins and Silver. It's a deeper and more complex relationship than I've seen in any other Disney animated movie. I loved the fact that they showed Silver"s human side. Even though Silver is a shady character, somehow him and Hawkins connect. I also respect the fact that Disney didn't change Silver into an Angel so that we accept his positive connection with Hawkins, he stayed just as crooked at the end as the begining.
What is disapointing me about Disney is the fact that they are doing a terrible job of marketing this movie. There is no reason why this movie can't be the blockbuster that it should be. The fact that I didn't even know this movie existed until a few weeks ago, or that I haven't heard any buzz about it, makes me think something is just not right. Someone at Disney doesn't want this to be a hit. Heck, I haven't even seen it advertised anywhere (even though, I think it's a gorgeous movie poster).
Shame on you Disney marketing!!!
